Pollution is a dangerous thing. It can really hurt or even kill animals. Why is there so much pollution and how can we stop it? Why there was so much pollution and is there a way to stop it. We are going to be taking hydrogel and pouring a spoonful of oil into it and seeing how long it takes to contaminate. We think that the used oil we become thickest with the hydrogen. Our three pronged thesis is oil effect, contamination, and pollution solution.
What the oil - effect is. The oil - effect is how oil affects different things like animals and other wildlife. People might want to know how oil kills animals and makes animals leave their “home” Because of pollution and how much oil it takes to contaminate a big section of water. Lots of people
Atmosphere: This also comes as a surprise to many people, although not directly affected by oil spills. The burning of oil in an oil spill creates vast amount of pollution that pollute the atmosphere. Also, when an Oil Rig is mining, flammable gasses are collected and burned so that it may not harm the workers or
More often than not, the society worries and frets over the impending doom posed by pollution on our own species, but the millions of other organisms feel the impact almost more than the creators of the issues themselves. In the Gulf Oil Spill of 2010, 3.19 million barrels were released into the ocean after a break in an Exxon oil pipe, and is rightfully called the worst oil spill in history. Cleaning up spilled oil is difficult in itself, but when thousands of metric tons of it spreads across the Gulf of Mexico, the job is much more substantial. Methods to remove and avoid spread as much as possible exist, but are never completely effective, especially when chemical dispersants are nearly impossible to contain. The death rate of dolphins in the area tripled, large coral reefs showed sign of immediate tissue damage, and aquatic birds became slick and unable to fly, causing many to starve. The oil spill covered in total nearly 1000 miles of ocean, and this is only example of the many that have occurred in the past twenty years (Frost, Emily). Air pollution is now the most common type of pollution, as our constant use of automobiles seems never ending. A deluge of acid rain has decimated entire forest ecosystems, and in cities such as Beijing and Singapore, the smog is so thick, many must wear masks to breathe comfortably. Countless examples of our wrong-doings on the
Some of these animals include: dolphins, turtles, fish, pelicans, and also other living organisms in the ocean, such as coral reefs. It stains the animals with oil, it can also cause internal damage. The oil can get in the animals lungs, causing pain, and in some cases, death. Some ways that an animal could be harmed by oil is hypothermia. Oil is a product we use to keep warm, if the oil mixes with the water, it makes a substance called “mousse”. Mousse will stick to the animals’ skin and fur. They could also be harmed by other animals too. When oil sticks to an animal, it makes it difficult for them to escape from predators. And if there is too much oil on the animal, it could drown. Death, chronic pain, and poisoning are some ways damage could be done to an animal with oil on
Repercussions of burning oil have arisen more progressively. The debatable topic of global warming holds burning fossil fuels responsible for higher temperatures in colder climates. An article by World Book explains why oil is so harmful towards the environment. As more cars are produced more pollutants are released into the atmosphere, those pollutants cause smog in larger manufacturing oriented cities as well as, acid rain. Factories, burning oil, dispose of the remaining chemicals into bodies of water rendering them unsafe to drink for both humans and animals alike (Hunt par. 1). Another article produced through World Book describes the
Kuwait is recorded to have the largest spill of oil in history measuring to about 1 million barrels. Oil spills around the world have caused major catastrophes. Therefore, the United States government have provided a policy to help prevent the devastations and protect the environment as God intended us to do. By learning the history of the Oil Pollution Act, how to help prevent the spills, and knowing how our environment can suffer from the tragedies are ways of learning how our government is involved in our society today. How does the Oil Pollution Act affect our environment?
Grease and oil in waterways rises to the top, forming a film that blocks sunlight, impairs photosynthesis, and prevents oxygen replenishment, which disrupts the oxygen cycle and enhances growth and reproduction of microorganisms that use oil as a food source. This process leads to eutrophication, whereby available oxygen required for fish, shellfish, and other living organisms which comprise the aquatic food chain is depleted. Furthermore, larval stages of aquatic organisms are particularly vulnerable to toxic substances contained in waste oil or lubricants in general. Toxins can accumulate in plankton and other tiny organisms at the base of the food chain and ultimately reach human beings as contaminants move up the food
One way that drilling for oil destroys animals homes is that fossil fuels create carbon dioxide, and then that burned carbon dioxide goes into the atmosphere and then Global Warming is starting to melt the ice caps that animals live on. Also, drilling the new wells that we have to drill to get the oil, that makes the amount of land for the animals to make homes go down, and when the land amount goes down so does the length of the animals, like the polar bear, go down. The average length of the polar bears mating season is about from the months March until May. Where they want to reproduce is normally around where seals like to be. But then When Global Warming gets more and more threatening, they have nowhere to go now. Males tend to be very aggressive during the mating period, so that kills off the population even more. When the female gets pregnant, she gains at least 44o pounds because once the ice breaks, she won't be able to hunt for food. Another reason is that if we happen to have an oil spill, that will devastate all the animals in the Arctic. For example, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill was created because when the BP operated rig “Macondo Prospect” exploded. The area in the Gulf that was affected by the spill was eight thousand five hundred miles, to nine thousand, four hundred and twenty one miles in 2010. But, the use of technology has really helped the oil and gas industry because it has stopped useless drilling. An example of this would be the
Many different resources are used when PET is manufactured. Oil has a big part in the production of plastic. Over 17 million barrels of oil are used yearly. The amount of oil required to make each bottle is about 25% of its capacity. This is a waste of resource because this oil is not a renewable resource. In addition, when bottles are manufactured about 2.5 million tons of Carbon Dioxide is released into the atmosphere yearly. In the long run, this will have a great impact on our environment. Bottled water is not only bad for the environment but also human beings and their health. When water is left in the plastic container for more than 10 weeks, chemicals from the plastic can leach into the water. This is bad for humans as these toxins
The discovery of oil has led to an abundance of new opportunities that have helped people create new inventions with the biggest being the automobile. Major corporations have arisen from “The impact of oil derived, in large part, from its attractiveness as an energy-dense, easily deliverable source of fuel for transportation.” Oil is sometimes coined the term black gold because of its value. Corporations like Chevron have made billions of dollars in the oil industry. With the rise of oil, the destruction of the environment has also become a serious issue in some parts of the world. Oil spills that have taken place in the gulf and in the forests have had a huge impact on both the people and wildlife that have lived around these affected areas. Black streaks of oil are seen in the sand in some beaches still to this day and. But these are just some of the major environmental disasters oil companies like Chevron are responsible for. Chevron has also made an impact on the environment around its refineries, and it is not a positive impact. The waste that comes out of these refineries is dumped into the ocean, rivers, and these toxic waste sites severely hurt the environment in the process. One of the biggest issue the company faces, is with the country of Ecuador where a lawsuit was filed against Texaco, which was acquired by Chevron in 2001. The corporation was blamed for the mass pollution across the Amazon after the company left the refineries with mass traces of toxic waste
Pollution has had a shocking impact in the atmosphere for including many irreparable damages to ocean life, serious health issues to human beings, and negative changes to the environment. Pollution is a man-made global dilemma which is increasing to a serious magnitude. Human beings, the number one culprit, seem to be blind to this matter. Humans’ inability to clearly see the problem they are creating, will be one of the causes for the world to be no more.
Leakage in hydrocarbon reservoir refers to the migration of petroleum fluids from one reservoir to either another reservoir or outside the tank via permeability that the faults create underground. The fault is a crack in the Earth’s crust usually from the plate tectonic movement. The Earth’s crust consists of large rocks that are always on a progressive movement since they hang on a liquid mantle that exists in the center of the Earth. Accumulation of excess pressure underneath may cause sudden changes in the land crust leading to shear, tension, or compression on the crust. Such forces result into faults in the reservoir, thus, allowing the hydrocarbon fluids to move from the pool (Hawkes, McLellan, and Bachu 1).
Since the past few decades, owning a car has become a necessity in order to commute from one place to another. However, cars do not work automatically, they require fuel. Since the past decade, the petroleum industry has become one of the leading industries impacting the nation’s economy. Oil has become an essential commodity as it is utilized in transportation vehicles, serves as a raw material for manufacturing plastics, and is utilized in homes for cooking. America’s economy is greatly dependent on petroleum as it is the “black gold” of the nation. The considerable significance of oil has led to the drilling of it, which is not only limited to land, but also the oceans. Offshore drilling is a method in which petroleum is extracted from underneath the seabed. It is one of the significant technological advancements in the past few decades. However, the ones who are involved in the process of offshore oil production are humans, and humans tend to make mistakes. In 1969, due to a human error, an oil spill occurred and natural gas, oil, and mud shot up the well and oozed into the ocean (“Offshore Drilling”). The oil spilled led to an environmental disaster which killed thousands of marine animals and distorted the environment. In order to prevent the same error, the government passed a moratorium in 1981, banning more than 85 percent of the country’s oil drilling sites (“Offshore Drilling”). The moratorium restricted the United States to mass-produce its natural resource.
A goal that GCC monarchies should strive for is greatly reducing domestic consumption of hydrocarbons. This would free more resources to be exported and thus boosting government revenues. As it has been stated, Saudi Arabia’s internal consumption of oil and gas is increasing at 7% yearly, and it is expected to double in a decade; a similar occurrence is taking place in Qatar and other wealthy countries of the Persian Gulf. In this regard, Reiche (2008) put forth the case of Norway: the Scandinavian country is a net provider of fossil fuels, yet, according to the Norwegian government , roughly 98% of its electricity is generated by hydropower, which emits no greenhouse gas. This allowed Norway to devote almost the entirety of its oil
Biofuel has captured much of the attention of many countries around the world. To ensure future energy security and reduce global green house gas, several companies across the world are investing on biofuel production as a renewable alternative energy to co-exist with fossil fuel, which is now becoming scarce (Royal Society, 2008). BP is one of the significant producers of Biofuel, which is producing biofuel from sugarcane in Brazil. However, the expansion of biofuel production has raised the concern about the negative environmental and social consequences related to sustainability. It depends on how biofuel development is designed. Brazil has lot of positive experiences in biofuel production, yet debate is still continuing on negative impacts of ethanol production from sugarcane. Negative impact sometimes outweighs positive impacts (UN Energy, 2007). Land that are used for ethanol production cause loss of natural resources (Faaij and Dieperink, 2007) and affect food production in developing countries as land is used in different pattern for sugar cane production (Doornbosch, 2007). Number of sustainability standards as well as environmental and social policies has been developed over the years to minimize the risk of negative impact. For sustainable biofuel development, BP participates in different stakeholder activities such as Roundtable for Sustainable biofuel and better Sugarcane Initiative (Bonsuro). Effective management of stakeholders is critical to
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment. It is a major problem in America and as well as the world. Pollution not only damages the environment, but damages us also. It has cause many problems ranging from lung cancer to the greenhouse effect. It is all among us but we continue to live in our own filth. What is the reason behind this flawed logic? In this paper I will examine the problems and solutions for this issue.
