Going into college at Ohio State my intentions are to have a career in public service. Through multiple internships thus far I have found a passion in serving for people. Growing up I have always felt the need to make an impact and give back to the community. Eventually, I hope to represent my community, the people of it, and those who are in need of representation. No matter what career path I choose, I hope to leave a legacy behind that will help the greater good. Working in both Senator Harry Reid’s office and State Representative Emilia Strong-Sykes’ office I have found a liking for constituent outreach. Responding to letters and addressing their concerns has been one of my favorite parts of the internship. While observing the position …show more content…
Making connections and creating contacts are essential. In the current job market, especially on capitol hill, it is all about who you know. When positions open up and spots need to be filled, employers search for applicants from within rather than posting them publicly. Without having somebody who can pass along your resume and give you a personal referral the probability of landing a job is slim. Marketing yourselves to others as a valuable asset to their office is important when networking on the hill. It is always important to keep this in mind when talking to people because you never know when they will be able to help you in the …show more content…
I have had the opportunity to go to coffee with multiple people throughout the office ranging from legislative correspondents to Harry Reid’s chief of staff. This is a great way to develope a relationship and inform them about your past experiences and future aspirations. They are always willing to give advice on what they would do if they were in your position and try to guide you on a path to success. If they recognize that you are a hard worker and are interested in a position that pops up, you never know what might fall into your lap. Learning about them and their career path is helpful as well. No one path is the same and it is interesting to see how each person got to the positions they are at today. Usually staffers have a primary focus they are working for and can be a resource on future projects. Having them as a resource could come in handy when doing a project in their field. Staying in contact afterwards is important incase you ever need them to write you a letter of recommendation or be a reference on your
Through experiencing social injustices, and making myself more culturally aware of inequality amongst social classes, I believe I have cultivated the leadership skills necessary for success. My willingness to reach out to the environment beyond me has exposed me to a career path that excites me and is my true passion. I plan to take action to improve the lives of the defenseless and those who are politically and socially disadvantaged. Through utilizing what I have learned by dedicating my time to service I know that I will truly make an impact on the lives of the helpless. During my years attending university I plan to continue a rigorous course load focused on a career path that truly intrigues me. I also plan on continuing to dedicate my free time to service and philanthropy. Overall, I have dedicated my high school career to becoming a leader in and out of the classroom. I hope that by attending University of Texas-Austin I will be able to utilize the resources provided to become a leader prepared to make worldwide change, continue on a path of academic achievement, and create a successful future not only for myself, but for those in generations to come as
I want to major in Psychology at CSU Stanislaus. I plan to pursue a Bachelor's than afterward a Master's degree. My dream job is to become a Councilor. I want to make an impact on people as I move through life. I want to make a difference. Community Service to me is the selfless act to help out. Even in the smallest ways one can be making our community a better way! Just offering to help someone who seems to be struggling to put bags in their car is helping your community. I want to live and be in a community where people care about one another. I try personally to be part of the movement for a community that cares for one another. I like to do simple acts as the one given as a example above. I also volunteered at a local retirement home originally
My motivation is to be part of moving the U.S. government into the 21st century. The 115th Congress will face many challenges shaping U.S. technology policies and regulations. As a Congressional Innovation Intern, I will improve my capacity to effect change by applying my technology and policy skills to assisting with this effort. The internship will provide invaluable experience in learning how legislative change happens in Congress. Taken together, these will enhance my ability to effect the change I anticipate in my future career.
You must make connections to even get a job. To pass legislature, you must be patient and willing to talk to a lot of people one-on-one to get it done. Retail politics always comes in handy. When dealing with one person at a time, you must remember to focus on what issues affect them and what is important to them in order to to gain their support. You must make deals with others and follow through on promises you make. There is almost nothing as important in political connections as trust. Chris Matthews makes very clear in this book that relationships are the foundation of a career in Washington. Nothing could get done without the alliances we see in Washington
At the end of my year and half long internship with United States Congressman Dave Loebsack, I was given a flag flown over the United States Capitol, a photograph of the Congressman and me at my graduation party, and a note from the Congressman thanking me for service. These three objects are important to me because the serve as a reminder of the hard work I put in for Congressman Loebsack, and the people of Iowa’s second congressional district.
Next, I began my internship for the Targeted Engagement team at Targeted Victory, as I learned about the technology, advertising and political frim aspect of politics. Here, I helped create a daily company newsletter through email software applications such as Silverpop. I
Academically, I want to make the most of the incredible opportunity of receiving a higher education; however, I also hope to grow and develop as an individual. I will be also be joining the men's soccer team at Wofford College, which will present additional challenges as well as opportunities. College will undoubtedly present a plethora of new experiences and open a number of new doors and opportunities. I want to soak it all in and make the most of every minute. My ultimate dream is to work in a career that I feel passionate about. Ensuring that I feel strongly about my work is very important to me and I believe it is pivotal to maximizing my potential contribution to society. My greatest interest and passion currently lies in learning and better understanding politics, economics, sociology, and other social sciences. A career in public service is where I believe I can thrive and flourish. Whether it be in education, economics, healthcare, or any other outlet, I have no doubt public service is where I belong. Throughout my life, I have constantly looked to fulfill positions of leadership and I plan on continuing to do so in my professional life. As my generation becomes the leaders of America's future, I hope to be a leading figure that can assist in moving us in a promising
My career plan is to go to college and study to pursue the fields of criminology, politics, the legal field, athletic training, and lobbying. Currently, I am undecided on what my future career will be, but I know that I would want to have a career in the social sciences because my goal is to have a career that would positively impact the community around me. These careers relate to my academy of human
My supervisor Gabriel Roberts, and his assistant Amanda De Maria, were great at getting me acclimated to working with the FJD. With little previous knowledge about the FJD, these two have helped me become more knowledgeable about the communication field, as well as the legal field. When I accepted the internship opportunity I didn’t know exactly what I was getting myself into. Gabe and Amanda aided me in my adjustment into the judicial world by being supportive and referring me to resources to expand my knowledge.
When signing up for an internship in Senator Flake’s office, I did not know what to expect. I did not know the type of work I would be doing. I hardly knew who Senator Flake was. It sounded like an interesting opportunity that I learned about at the job fair, and I thought it would be fun. It was far more than fun though—I learned so much from my internship, researching for the office, attending meetings, writing letters, and staying up-to-date on current events. More than anything else, though, I learned from the constituents themselves.
I plan to attend California State University, Long Beach this fall and hope to get my Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Volunteering in my community throughout high school has allowed me to meet and help many different people and made me realize how important it is to give back to my community. This has inspired me to continue my education and to open my very own medical clinic
In the near future, I will continue to be a good citizen, wherever I go. At college, I plan to become involved within the community. While I am still unsure which college I will attend, I know that people everywhere need help,
I hope to take what I have learned about the political system at Miami University and strive to get money out of politics, so the average person can voice their opinions just as much as any wealthy corporation or individual. When I run for Congress I want to fund my campaign entirely on low-level contributions from everyday citizens, to prove to the public and other government officials that they do not need to be controlled by lobbyists and special interest groups who have the power of the purse. My greatest aspiration is to be apart of a truly democratic society that represents the interests of everyone, even those who cannot afford to donate large amounts to their representatives. If I make it to the House of Representatives, I hope to bring about lasting policy changes similar to the McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act, and I would like to see the Citizens United decision overturned. My education now will help me achieve these goals and be a mouthpiece for all those who will not get the same educational opportunities I have been
I plan to major in political science because it is something that interests me and I have a passion for helping people. However, in order to help people and effectively create change, you must first educate yourself and understand how the system works. My overall goals are to first earn my degree in political science. Then to complete law school, become a lawyer, and specialize in civil rights. As a lawyer, I will speak out against social injustice and provide legal aid to those who need it.
I see community service as the key element to my future. I believe that each person should leave the world a little better than how they found it. Community service has held a huge part of my life already. I currently am very involved with a program called Candlelighters. Candlelighters is a program that works with cancer patients and their families. As a part of the Candlelighters program I have seen many children lose their lives to cancer. Each child has left a mark on my heart, and I am a better person for knowing them.
