In this passage from Of Mice & Men, John Steinbeck lays stress on the theme of friendship by focusing on the sense of hope that friends give to one another. To begin with, the narrative point of view works together with the other elements used to develop the theme of friendship and helps bring focus and attention to the way the two best friends chat and interact. The passage begins with, “George’s voice became deeper. He repeated words rhythmically as though he had said them many times before.” (page 8, lines 1-2). Steinbeck’s narrative P.O.V. is very straight forward with a direct route towards his meaning. His sentences are short and choppy when he narrates the novel. The narrator having few lines in this passage and there being more dialogue allows the characters to develop, readers to focus purely on the characters, and gives readers a better comprehension of their bond. …show more content…

This quote shows the readers how close they are. In George’s last line he talks about their future ranch and how they are going to live together indicating that neither of them mind living with each other because they are already so close they consider each other their only family. Furthermore, the element of diction allows readers to gain a deeper understanding of the two men’s relationship. As George was telling the story, “Lennie broke in. “Because… Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you,and that’s why.”” (page 8, lines 12-13). George and Lennie have spoken about this dream so many times that it has almost become a story to them that they both know by heart. Although Lennie does not recite the story as well as George, he has listened carefully to him so many times that Lennie can now quote his exact words. The quote also shows that they do not have much of anything else other than each other and their friendship. This gives both the men hope for a better future; hope for the American
