Death consumes the world, there has been almost three million deaths so far with only three weeks into the year. There are people all over the world who come face to face with death daily. It seems as if death roams the world. Some deaths are more tragic than others. In the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, several people die but the death of Curley’s wife was the most tragic of all. She was unjustly murdered and she didn’t even have an identity. When she died, she left the world in loneliness, in the end no one ever got to know her or mourn her death. She died alone. Innocent people die every minute, she was one of those innocent people. One minute, a person can be full of life and the next they’re gone.
Moreover, Curley’s wife was tragically killed by Lennie. Many people wish that they die peacefully and that they leave a legacy. How she died was the complete opposite; she had dreams of her own. She “coulda made something of [herself] .” (88) Her death was abrupt and pitiful. She just wanted someone to talk to and be friends with. Sure, she could have prevented her own death by not letting Lennie touch her hair but she was only being friendly. Her character was so sexualized making her vulnerable. Lennie killing her was an

Many claim that Lennie didn’t know any better or that he only had good motives. Sure, he didn’t know any better but, either way, those bunnies and Curley’s wife died. All Lennie cared about was himself. He was selfish despite him not knowing anything. He was worried that George wouldn’t “let [him] tend no rabbits.” (91) How can people say that he didn’t know anything, when he clearly knew what he needed to do to get what he wanted or needed. Again, all Curley’s wife wanted was to make friends, she was lonely, she never “[got] to talk to nobody.” (86) The only reason why she flirted was so that she had something to
George and Lennie were best friends for a long time, more like brothers. Lennie is about as bright as a 2 watt bulb, so George couldn’t really get mad at him when he accidently killed Curley’s wife while feeling the softness of her hair. “…’I ain’t mad. I never been mad, an’ I ain’t now. That’s a thing I want ya to know’”. The two had planned a future together—a future in their own dream ranch, a ranch where no trouble would ever bother them. “’You…an’ me. Ever’body gonna be nice to you. Ain’t gonna be no more trouble. Nobody gonna hurt nobody nor steal from ‘em’”. Then after he tells him about the rabbits that Lennie is so fond of, he shoots him in the back of the head where he knows it will not hurt him, and Lennie will not know what hit him. This is the peaceful alternative to what Curley had in store for him. Curley's exact words were "shoot the bastard right in the guts." George's euthanizing of Lennie makes the mentally incompetent Lennie die with dignity. Had Curley gotten to Lennie first, Lennie would have suffered. This shows you how much George cares for Lennie, no matter what he does or the crimes he commits. He’d always be there to help Lennie get right back up to his feet, make him forget all his worries, and move on like nothing happened. I strongly believe George was the right person to kill Lennie, and made the right decision in doing so, rather than to let him suffer in the hands of Curley.
To start off, Curley’s wife had a dream of becoming an actress. She was unable to fulfill this dream because she didn’t receive a letter from Hollywood. After never receiving the letter, she gave up and settled for marrying Curley. This is the first reason Curley’s wife appears to be a victim. Curley’s wife confessed her dreams of being an actress to Lennie. She mentioned how she believed that her mother stole
Did Curley actually love her or was she just property for him. If the whole time in the book she’s referred to as “Curley’s wife” then she isn’t really being treated as a person, she’s being treated more as property or as a belonging and that really isn’t a humane thing to be treated like. Even when Curley’s wife first died, Curley wasn’t sad that he had lost his wife. He instead was angry that someone had taken his property or his belonging. That right there isn’t love, that’s greed and possession and that isn’t something that you should kill about. If Curley had really loved her he would have called her by her name and not refer to her as “his wife”. Curley was just all in all mad that he had one less
‘Of Mice and Men’ is an excellent example of foreshadowing because John Steinbeck very intricately foreshadowed the most pivotal events in the book, i.e; The Death of Curley’s Wife and The Mercy Killing of Lennie. The following paragraphs will, firstly, describe how Steinbeck foreshadowed the Death of Curley’s Wife, and secondly, describe how he foreshadowed the killing of Lennie Small. Curley’s Wife’s death is foreshadowed multiple times in the book. To start off when the character is introduced ‘She had full rouged lips…
He has used this by using the quote '' The ache for attention were all gone from her face. She was very pretty and simple, and her face was sweet and young.'' Steinbeck has described her as an angel who washed out her sins and went pure. In contrast to this Curley only cares about his social status. You can see this when ''Curley...ain't you better stay here with your wife''. Normally when your wife dies you would want to share your last moments together but the fact that Curley has to be reminded about his wife's death is upsetting since his main focus is killing Lennie. And it emphasises that he just used her as a possession due to the fact that it was a loveless marriage therefore he didn't really care much about her. In this quote you can also tell that all the bunkmates felt sorry for her even thought she acted with suspense because she didn't deserve more misery in her
One event that foreshadows Curley's wife death is Lennie. Lennie’s actions foreshadow the death of Curley's wife. Steinbeck uses what had happened on Weed as a foreshadowing device to suggest what will happen later on in the novella. Steinbeck suggests that “ like what happened in Weed…touch ever’thing he likes...Feel this red dress an‘ the girl lets out a squawk…”(41). Lennie likes to nice things and soft
John Steinbeck presents Curley’s wife at the start of the story as an irrelevant character because she has no relation with George and Lennie. At the start, Curley is one of the most important characters (besides George and Lennie) because he has the power to crush George and Lennie’s dream of having a farm of your own. But as the story goes on, to end, we see the importance of her character and that everything that has happened on the ranch is caused by her presence; even though she is not in the story as much as others, she has a long lasting effect on the other characters. She is mentioned in the story a lot because of how she would acted around the men working in the ranch. In the end, we knew Lennie and George were not going to get a
Humans are responsible for their own actions, and the characters Of Mice and Men are no exception. In Steinbeck's novel, Curley’s wife’s actions result in her tragic death. She faces this situation when she denies the warnings she is given in the first place. Therefore, Lennie, or anyone else for that matter, can not be responsible for her death. Curley’s wife is the only one to blame because she is warned to stay away in the first place, has knowledge of Lennie’s strength, and still allows Lennie to pet her hair even after seeing the result of him petting the puppy.
Of Mice and Men is a novel set on a ranch in the Salinas Valley in California, during the Great Depression of the 1930s by John Steinbeck. It was the first work to bring Steinbeck’s national recognition as a writer. The book addresses the real hopes and dreams of working-class America. Steinbeck's short novel raises the lives of the poor and dispossessed to a higher, symbolic level. The title suggests that plans of Mice and Men often go awry, a reference to Robert Burn’s poem "To a Mouse." Since the novel has been published, it has been called “Vulgar” and “Offensive”; perhaps because of the way it mentally handicapped people, people of different races (black people) and the way in which women were portrayed.
Another very important event of the novel is Curley’s wife death. Lennie is blamed for having killed her, although she could have easily avoided this by not talking to Lennie. He speaks to him as if he were a baby, and, since he tells her that he likes to pet soft things, she asks him to touch her hair. “Feel right aroun’ there an’ see how soft it is.” Lennie cannot stop, and when she orders him to leave her he holds on.Curley’s wife starts screaming and, to make her stop and not get into trouble with Curley, Lennie puts his hand on her mouth. He doesn’t realize how strong he is, and he kills Curley’s wife by breaking her neck. “[…] her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck.”
Another reason George had no other choice was that Lennie was not fully aware of his mental abilities as he was his physical strengths which often lead to Lennie getting in trouble like his one one incident that happened in weed before they came to the ranch. Also, aside from Curley’s Wife Lennie has killed other things before such as a mouse that he found, and a puppy on the ranch so Lennie could be a danger or potential threat to others on the ranch which would make sense to why George would have simply no other realistic choice but to kill him.
Steinbeck's novel 'Of Mice and Men' explores the everyday lives of migrant workers during the Great Depression. In this era, American men were forced to leave their families and become 'drifters'. These were people who didn't have a fixed job and continually moved from place to place.
In Of Mice & Men, the character Curley’s Wife is depicted as flirtatious, promiscuous, and insensitive. However, her husband Curley sees her as only a possession. Most of the workers at the ranch see her as a tart, whereas Slim, the peaceful and god-like figure out of all the men, see her as lonely. This answer will tell us to which extent, is Curley’s wife a victim, whether towards her flirtatious behaviour, or to everyone’s representation of her.
Although she wasn’t physically there Curley’s Wife’s Mom, a bitter old woman, had some responsibility in the death of Curley’s Wife’s. In her last minutes alive Curley’s Wife tells Lennie all about the glamorous life she could have and almost had. She explains to Lennie about how she met an actor and once he got back home to Hollywood he would write her a letter telling
Curley’s wife is a lonely and Naïve, and that makes her an easy prey. She is the only woman on the ranch she is a lonely woman. Her husband, Curley, is a mean and over powering man, uses her to pick fights with other guys. He is a terrible husband who not only is mean to his wife but also leads us to believe that he beats her up. Curley’s wife usually would listen to her records but Curley even breaks those. Her flirtatious nature is what gets her into trouble, and that also leads her to her death. Lennie is a gentle giant who doesn’t mean to hurt anybody but accidentally does. In the case of Lennie, Curley’s wife does not know what she is getting in for. Curley’s wife flirtatious nature is a harsh reality but as an innocent person get her in to trouble.
