What is Ithaca? Why Ithaca plays an influential role in Odysseus Translated by Robert Fagles and how modern authors have defined Ithaca in their literary works. In order to answer all these questions we must dive deep down to find out the meaning of Ithaca. According to the book Odysseus translated by Robert Fagles , Ithaca is the hometown of the Odysseus and the love of returning to Ithaca keeps him alive and motivated throughout the journey. As we know that Odysseus was exiled from his hometown for long time and he was involved in a trojan war, which kept him away from his hometown for a long time. Ithaca has different meanings ,every person has a different Ithaca and just like Odysseus, his Ithaca was returning back to his hometown after he spent most of his time in exile. A famous Greek poet Constantine P. Cavafy describes the meaning of Ithaca in his poem Ithaca. He defines Ithaca as one’s destination or goal in his life. Once an individual sets a goal in his life he has to remain committed and he must prepare himself to face every obstacles that occurs in his journey to achieve the goal. Facing hurdles and obstacles throughout the journey makes us stronger and provides us with valuable experience. If we fail to achieve our goal we shouldn’t consider it as a failure instead we should think about that process of achieving that goal through which we were able to gain valuable experience and knowledge that no can take away.
