Odysseus Hero Characteristics

The Odyssey is a great example of heroes and the traits they possess. One such hero in the book is named Odysseus. A man who has been away from his home in Ithaca for 20 years. Throughout his adventures, he has been through many dangerous obstacles in the way of him and his crew, which have even taken the lives of many of his men as well. The traits that make Odysseus a hero are courage, intelligence, and confidence. One trait that makes Odysseus a hero is his confidence. Odysseus says to his crew, “Old shipmates, friends, the rest of you stand by; I’ll make the crossing in my own ship with my own company,” (Homer 374). Inside Polyphemus’ cave, Odysseus says, ‘“Poseidon Lord, who sets the Earth a-tremble, broke it up on the rocks at your land’s end,”’ (Homer 377). Odysseus is quick to come up with a ready lie to Polyphemus, figuring if his ship wasn’t already destroyed, the Cyclops would’ve done so. Now that the Cyclops thinks it is destroyed, Odysseus will have a way home after his escape from the island. Responding to the Cyclops, Odysseus says, ‘“My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy,”’ (Homer 380). Odysseus responds to Polyphemus by saying his name is Nohbdy, which really sounds like nobody. Speaking to the Cyclops, Odysseus says, ‘“Cyclops, try some wine. Here’s liquor to wash down your scraps of men. Taste it, and see the kind of drink we carried under our planks,”’ (Homer 379). Odysseus has a plan to make Polyphemus drunk with incredibly powerful wine, so he can stab the Cyclops’ eye out while he is in a slumber. Odysseus must be confident because if the plan doesn’t work, he and his crew will be killed. As Odysseus leaves the island of the Cyclopes, Odysseus says, ‘“Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!”’ (Homer 384). Odysseus yells out to the wounded Cyclops, telling him his name, family, and home. Odysseus is confident by saying this as he is sure the Cyclops will not seek revenge as he is already
