Odysseus Greek Patriarchy In Homer's Odyssey

Queen Penelope cannot rule the kingdom without Odysseus. The group of elders came and told her to choose a husband since they thought Odysseus died during the Trojan war, even Odysseus wanted Telemachus to rule if he didn’t return from the Trojan war. If this were a normal woman of Greece, then she would be under the care of her father or older brother, even a family friend. But, her husband is lost at sea along with her father is most likely dead, and she has no friends. Right now, Telemachus would take care of her and the kingdom of Ithaca. Alas, he is not old enough to rule yet.

Homer’s The Odyssey is very much an epic tale of a man’s heroic quest. The protagonist, Odysseus, is a cunning, brave, strong, and tenacious character who is given the title of a hero. This “hero”, however, does not always show characteristics of a hero, which leads many to believe that Odysseus, is not a true hero after all. In fact, Odysseus cheats on his wife multiple times, is willing to sacrifice his men in order to get home, and slaughters all his maids even though he did not have to. In The Odyssey, Homer attempts to create a complex portrait of a hero, but fails at his attempt when making Odysseus unforgiving, self absorbed, and a philanderer.

Odysseus is the main character in an epic poem called the Odyssey. In the poem Odysseus has had some bad luck getting home, with some of the gods helping him and some hindering him; his journey towards home is a constant struggle. In this poem we see a man being broke and rebuilt, through constant irony his faith was damaged and without the help of Athena he probably would have given up on his journey. Lastly, Odysseus treats people atrociously. For example, when Odysseus killed an abundance of his own men, who revolted against him, he demands a few women to drag the corpses into the courtyard, “As he spoke here came the women in a bunch, all wailing, soft tears on their cheeks. They fell to work to lug the corpses out into the courtyard” (XXll. 464-467). Nevertheless, Odysseus keeps on commanding the women to do more, “In fear these women bore the cold weight of the dead. The next thing was to scrub off chairs and tables and rinse them down” (XXll. 469-472). Women should be treated with respect, but Odysseus lacks respect for women. The role of women in The Odyssey differ from the role of women in our society in today's world. Some women shown in the poem are helpful in preparing Odysseus for a safe trip home. Odysseus’ last adventure in the poem which is the first told in The Odyssey takes place on Calypso’s island. She gives Odysseus warmth, protection, and love because she can see that he has traveled from afar with many hardships that he has overcome. Since his ship was struck down and all of his crewmates drowned, he had to swim to shore. Calypso gave him warmth with a fire and shelter until he was ready to finish his trip up and return to his home. After some time, Calypso got unexpectedly close with Odysseus and showed him some affection. Back in the time when this story was written, many people were loyal to one person but also showed loved toward others. It was not frowned upon then, like it is today. As they stayed in her home, they started to get more friendly. Later, Odysseus decided it was time to visit his wife and return to his homeland.
