Odysseus: A Hero In Homer's The Odyssey

A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles- Christopher Reeve. The definition of hero is almost always different depending on who you ask. In ancient Greek society, the definition of a hero could also be taken in many different ways. Such as, a hero could be someone who is good with words, brave, a great warrior, physically and emotionally strong, or even someone who has gone through great suffering. They used stories and pictures to tell their multiple views on heroic figures. In The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus should be considered a hero because he has many strengths, physically and mentally, that make him a great heroic figure to many Greeks.
Odysseus is a hero in many aspects of the ancient Greeks. In an ancient Greek world, a hero is a divine being or even a great and brave warrior (“Institute of Etnography. Human or Superhuman: The Concept of Hero in Ancient Greek Religion And/in Politics”). Many times during The Odyssey, Odysseus tells stories of his bravery, such as when they were trapped in the cave of the one eyed giant. In The Odyssey, Odysseus goes through a great deal of suffering. He has suffered so much, that anyone he told his tale to felt sorry for him. When Odysseus told the King of the Phaeacians his stories, the King responded, “Odysseus, now that you have come to my bronze-floored house, my vaulted roofs, I know you won’t be driven off your course, nothing can hold you back however much you suffered, you’ll sail home,” (Homer 286. 3-7). It takes a great deal of suffering and hardship for a king to feel bad for you because most kings have gone through a lot of hardships also. This truly shows just how much Odysseus has
