A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles- Christopher Reeve. The definition of hero is almost always different depending on who you ask. In ancient Greek society, the definition of a hero could also be taken in many different ways. Such as, a hero could be someone who is good with words, brave, a great warrior, physically and emotionally strong, or even someone who has gone through great suffering. They used stories and pictures to tell their multiple views on heroic figures. In The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus should be considered a hero because he has many strengths, physically and mentally, that make him a great heroic figure to many Greeks.
Odysseus is a hero in many aspects of the ancient Greeks. In an ancient Greek world, a hero is a divine being or even a great and brave warrior (“Institute of Etnography. Human or Superhuman: The Concept of Hero in Ancient Greek Religion And/in Politics”). Many times during The Odyssey, Odysseus tells stories of his bravery, such as when they were trapped in the cave of the one eyed giant. When he and his men are escaping it is said, “Hoisting high that olive stake with its stabbing point,

In The Odyssey, Odysseus goes through a great deal of suffering. He has suffered so much, that anyone he told his tale to felt sorry for him. When Odysseus told the King of the Phaeacians his stories, the King responded, “Odysseus, now that you have come to my bronze-floored house, my vaulted roofs, I know you won’t be driven off your course, nothing can hold you back however much you suffered, you’ll sail home,” (Homer 286. 3-7). It takes a great deal of suffering and hardship for a king to feel bad for you because most kings have gone through a lot of hardships also. This truly shows just how much Odysseus has
In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus' actions and decisions in books IX-XII has shown that even though he is extremely clever and courageous, the great tactician's selfishness and sense if hubris often stand in the way of his success. First of all, Odysseus is exceptionally brave, he has experienced more than any mortal man should and will never cower away from a challenge. For example, Odysseus led his men on a dangerous endeavor in blinding the Cyclops Polyphemus. Odysseus vividly recalls how the monster viciously killed two of his crew, "Then he [Polyphemus] dismembered them and made his meal / gaping and crunching like a mountain lion" (9.316-17). Realizing he would likely be killed, Odysseus rallied his crew and blinded the horrendous beast without fear.

In Homer’s the Odyssey, Odysseus consistently struggles with tasks and takes questionable decisions. What becomes true in the epic, is that it’s not easy to be a hero. Throughout the Odyssey Odysseus proves himself not a hero when he consistently submits to temptation, is helped to the point where he is never truly at risk by Athena and makes reckless and murderous decisions. Moreover, if even a king like odysseus fails to be a hero what hope does any of us have? Odysseus consistently submits to all forms of temptation in the odyssey, further proving he is not a hero.
One of the challenges Odysseus faces on his journey back to Ithaca is the land of the Lotus Eaters. The Lotus Eaters showing “no will to do us harm” (489) offers Odysseus and his men a sweet honeyed plant. Who ever ate the Lotus became “forgetful of their homeland” (489) and “longed to stay forever” (489). Odysseus and his men need to overcome the temptations of staying there eating Lotus any time they want. They have to fight the internal battle of giving in to the sweet honeyed plant and instead they need to stay strong and support each other. Seeing his men losing desire to return home because of this dangerous honeyed plant, Odysseus knows he has to do something fast before all hope of returning to Ithaca is lost. Taking action into his
In the The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus exhibited many traits that affected his journey. Some of these traits match the typical traits of an epic hero. An epic is a long narrative often relating the adventures of epic heroes, which describes the Odyssey, with Odysseus acting as the epic hero. An epic hero is a physically impressive hero who is on a great quest for something, battling fate, and all forces to get that. Odysseus is fighting against all odds to reach his home of Ithaca, where he was a strong leader and fighter.
Odysseus is very honorable. He stakes his pride on the fact that he honors the rules between the guest and the host. Odysseus survives his travels by being calm and brave when necessary. Odysseus is not lucky, he thinks his situations through calmly and bravely without panicking.
Many people have a different idea as to what is considered a hero and what is considered heroic. In the “One Eyed Giant’s Cave,” Odysseus, who is an example of that, is certainly a character that is well known in the story. Homer portrays him as showing a lot of heroic attributes throughout, that make him seem like a very high profile person, compared to other characters. Odysseus shows a lot of bravery, as well as intelligence, that he uses as an advantage. Odysseus certainly takes on many tasks and is put in situations that makes him seem like that character he is.
If I were Alcinous and I had just heard Odysseus’ story, I think I would be nearly convinced to help him. I say nearly because, while I would believe that Odysseus had a strong desire to go home, I do not think that I would help him get home.
When I first read "The Odyssey" by Homer I thought that Odysseus was an intelligent and strong leader. It was after reading the poem again, discussing it with my mom, and reading other student's answers that I came to the conclusion that Odysseus was actually more clever than intelligent. He's also courageous, determined, cunning and boastful. He was a hero.
In the history of literature, there is likely no hero more famous than Odysseus. He is the archetype of the traditional epic hero, a character who’s story in The Odyssey matches Joseph Campbell's hero’s journey structure beat for beat. However, the addition of a modern perspective into the events featured in The Odyssey causes us to have to answer a new set of questions about its hero. Is Odysseus a good leader? Reading the Odyssey shows us that he is not.
A narrative of the self allows for the author to present a theme that is easily relatable to readers. Through this the readers may align themselves with the theme, and are able to learn a lesson or change their way of thinking. Both The Odyssey and The Apology are works that have underlying themes that the reader can identify and learn from. The Odyssey and the Apology do not have the same plot, but express similar themes.
As the famous general, Robert E Lee used to say,“A true man of honor feels humbled when he cannot help humbling others”. the Greek poet, Homer, was born sometime between the 12th and 8th centuries BC, possibly somewhere on the coast of Asia minor. He is famous for his epic poems, such as, for examples, The Iliad and The Odyssey. In The Odyssey by Homer, what Odysseus learned from his situations, in a ancient world that is ruled gods, causes him to realize that he needs to be humble before Gods.

Being a legitimate hero is not all about having the extraordinary supernatural powers commonly seen on television. Heroes are people who aid others, often putting themselves at risk to do so. They made the decision to fight, not necessarily physically, for their values. Odysseus, the main character in The Odyssey, should be considered a hero. He put his own life in jeopardy to protect his men from the supernatural threats that they faced throughout their journey. Odysseus should be regarded as a hero because he is brave, clever, and cautious.
