Is anybody aware that on a daily basis you could be consuming the 5 million tonnes of plastic that enters the sea annually? That is why today I will be informing you on the dangers and risks of animal and human lives due to ocean pollution. Clearly, I am against the actions of these careless people. The trash and plastic that is thrown onto the streets everyday ends up blowing into the water and polluting our world’s beautiful oceans.

Back in the 1800s most waste that ships carried were dumped in our oceans without much thought. The difference from then to now is that the dump 200 years ago was biodegradable dump now about 14.4 million tons of our waste is plastic which is not always biodegradable according to the EPA and that number is rapidly increasing every year. Our oceans are massively being affected and so are we in ways unimaginable like the fact that our fish are ingesting chemicals that is in the plastics in the sea and we are being fed these toxic chemicals. Maybe if citizens have a better understanding of what is going on in our oceans they’ll decide to do something about it.

Most of the plastic from littering starts on land, but than gets carried into the ocean by rain and wind. Chemicals from plastic can be highly toxic and than our quality of the sea water will start going down. A huge source of plastic in the ocean is littering. The EPA reports “Every bit of plastic ever made still exists” and this means the plastic is abusing not just our ocean but everything in it and also never going away. According to Greenpeace, “nearly half of all ocean pollution comes from acitvities that take place on land.” People are harming the ocean, especially when bottled water companies manufacture the plastic. Over the few years, humans have discarded millions of tons of garbage into the oceans. Ever wonder where the cup you threw out this morning will end up? Or the plastic spoon you used for lunch? How about the cap of a water bottle? The calamitous plastic ends up in the water, taking thousands of years to decompose. The consumption of plastic by the marine life is perilous and the leading cause of death for life on shore.

We the people need to work together to minimize and ultimately stop the production and use of plastics. Driving down the highway, or the gravel road it doesn’t matter I look on either side of the road and what do I see; plastic debris and trash. Someone had to have thrown it there or maybe it blew out of the back of a trash truck going by but regardless there it sits until someone picks it up or an animal mistakes it for a meal or a home.

The numbers of how much plastic and trash that are dumped into our oceans every year are sickening. Plastic debris in oceans affect more than just simply ocean plants. Around 250 species of ocean animals are affected and are known to suffer from the consequences of severe plastic pollution. Reusable plastics are a great alternative to single use plastics. By using refillable water bottles the amount of plastic waste could be drastically decreased. Not using plastic straws, silverware, and sandwich bags could also lessen the effect of waste in our oceans. Recycling is the best way to cut back on how much debris ends up in the water. I have been recycling since I can remember. If people got paid to recycle then everyone would without question. I believe recycling should be a law in our state because it already is in other states and has been shown to reduce waste pollution so I believe it needs to be implicated in ours.

This has been done over and over again throughout the years. All though plastic is biodegradable, it takes an average of 450 years for it to do so. Some bottles can take up to 1000 years for this to happen. By that time our planet will not be able to support such thing and will give up on us. Plastic usually breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic over the years before it to fully biodegrade. These tiny pieces of plastic are eaten by so many marine animals that live around them and every single animal that eats these tiny pieces are affected by it and many times die. All these tons of plastic don’t just disappear or get eaten by the animals though, they accumulate. The great pacific garbage patch is an example of this happening. This area is around 7 million tons heavy and twice the size of texas, it can also get 9 feet deep. Facts say that there is 6 times more plastic than plankton. In case you didn 't know, plankton is the main food for many animals living in the ocean, from small fish to the great whale shark depend on plankton to stay alive.

The plastic bag is an innovative invention all around the world. It makes the world more convenient and because of this convenience, the plastic bag is multi purposeful and is used widespread such as in stores, houses, restaurants, etc. However, the problem is that a lot of people do not know that plastic bags have many harmful effects. First of all, plastic bags cause environmental damages, and produces cataclysmic events in wildlife. For example, plastic bags become litter after they are found in waterways, parks, beaches, and streets. Plastic bags also effect air when burned, infusing the air with toxins. Something that many may not think about when they think of plastic bags is the harmful effects it brings to the animals. The death of countless animals such as dolphins, turtles, penguins, etc. is due to the production of plastic bags. The ocean is home to thousands of species and ocean wonders but there is so often trash thrown into the sea that disrupts the life beneath the water. Those animals ingest plastic bags and ultimately die, while another animal comes back and eats that dead animal which results in a chain reaction that is going to come back around and bite humans back. The public should realize that plastic bags have adverse effects, and those effects will be worse than the convenience of using a plastic bag.
