The House on Mango Street is a collection of short stories written by Sandra Cisneros. Cisneros is a Mexican-American who grew up poor. The House on Mango Street tells stories about Mexican Americans like Sandra and obstacles in the way of reaching the American Dream. The American Dream is the equal opportunity for all Americans no matter the race to living a healthy lifestyle. What stands in the way for the residents of Mango Street of reaching a healthy lifestyle. The biggest obstacles in the way of reaching the American Dream is Language Barrier, Prejudice, and Poverty. The first and most obvious obstacle in the way of reaching the American Dream is the Language Barrier. For example Esperanza says the following about Mamacita “I believe she doesn't come out because she is afraid to speak english” (Doc C) I believe what Esperanza is saying is that Mamacita has difficulty adapting to America because she can’t speak english. Like Mamacita many immigrants struggle adapting to a new country because they can’t speak the language. When people can’t speak the new language they can’t communicate, this means they can’t get a job, which means they can’t get money, which means they can’t reach the American dream. …show more content…

For example Marin (in Doc C) says “Maybe if the surgeon would have come, if he didn’t lose so much blood, If only the surgeon came. Marin says this about Gerardo’s death the surgeon never came which shows Prejudice because the surgeon didn't think twice about trying to save Gerardo. Many other immigrants other than Gerardo are treated in this disrespectful manor. People like Gerardo struggle from being prejudiced this a problem because it is hard to get jobs and money when aren’t thought twice
