Nya(a main character in the book) lives a very difficult life in southern sudan. In the beginning of the book Salva’s village is being shot up and he is told to flee/run into the bush. Once Salva is in the bush him and the other kids start walking. After a couple days they more and more people join them. They then are stopped by a military group that took all the men and left the women and children. (pg.12). While salva was with his big group after he had found his uncle he had made a good friend,Marial. Salva and his group had a late night and salva slept for a long time. When he awoke he awoke to the sound of crying and his uncle told him. That Marial had been killed in the night.(pg.38) Salve overcame this by telling himself that Marial would want him to make it safely and that kept salve going. Another thing that happened to him was when salva and his group were stopped by a group of nuer soldiers. The soldiers raided the camp, Tied Salva’s uncle to a tree, And shot him with his own weapon.(pg.63) Salva overcame this the same way he overcame Marial’s death, by telling himself that he had to finish the trip for uncle and Marial. Salva also overcame many obstacles in the United
He becomes friends with one of the boys in the group called Marial, when they keep walking Salva comes across his uncle. His uncle said he would protect them at all costs with his gun, but one night Marial had gone missing, so Salva's uncle had told him that he was eaten by a lion. When they made it to the Nile river they made boats and went to an island in the middle where they spent the night and were attacked by mosquitoes, the next day they got as much water as they could and kept walking until they found nine men lying on the ground. One of the women in the group tried giving his water to one of the men, the men that could still walk came with the group, when one night the group was robber by three solders and Salva's uncle was shot and killed, but they continues to walked until they arrived at the camp where Salva spent the next six years of his life. After six years the camp was attacked by solder and people were forced to cross the river where thousands died, Salva was then the leader of fifteen hundred boys, where they were lead to
Hope comes Salva’s way in the toughest times. “Even in the midst of his fear, he realized for the first time in the trip, it was good to be the youngest and the smallest: The men would not be interested in his clothes.” (Park, 62). As Salva was lucky to be youngest, he was not stripped of his clothes as the older kids had. He realizes being young has it’s benefits. “Salva! Come quickly! Your name is on the list today! He was going to America.” (Park, 89). Salva had been chosen to fly to America from the thousands that weren’t. He gets a new family and people to take care of him, while most others have to suffer more pain. Going to America gave Salva opportunities and hope for his future. Salva had to progress through treacherous conditions in Africa. His reward was freedom and a future in America.
To begin with, Salva showed that it was possible for him to survive by perseverance. In the text on page 9, it says "He ran until he could not run anymore." This shows that Salva wanted to survive. He did not want to get caught up in a war and do things
Then, Salva came across a group of people just like him, trying to escape the war. Little did he know his uncle was part of the group, the leader in fact. Salva was weak and not very popular amongst the people, however his uncle taught him the great art of perseverance. Salva kept going with this group until some attackers killed his uncle. The group divided and Salva was separated once again. Then, Salva came across a group of about 2500 boys separated and desperate
Now Salva’s 22, he’s learned how to play volleyball and how to speak English. Then one day there’s a rumor going around camp that some people with good health and who don’t have families will be chosen to fly to America. Salva is chosen and later travels to New York and lives his life there, he then starts an organization for building wells back in Sudan and once he raises enough money he flies back down to his home country to help the people still living there. He built wells and schools for the children there not only for his tribe but for the all the other ones as well. Many people believe that the theme would be too help others although none of that would have happened if Salva didn’t persevere through all the sorrow he’s been through. He had a lot of questions with unknown answers but he still kept walking. When he saw his own Uncle get murdered he kept going. Even when he swam through the bloody crocodile river he never stopped. If you really want something you need to keep an open mind and don’t give up on yourself, until you achieve your goal, keep on persevering, just like Salva
Run there shooting at us. In the movie queen of katwe phiona wanted to become a chess player. Slava was running and trying to find food. The theme of long walk to water by Linda Sue Park and queen of katwe is never give up.
First of all, Salva leaves his family because he hears gunshots outside of his classroom. Salva is terrified, he is afraid that the rebels will shoot them, and as Salva gets out of the classroom, Salva wanted to scream,”I need to go home! I must go home!” (pg.7). When Salva runs into the bush, as his teacher told him to, he wonders where he is going, and as he walked many other people of different villages walked with him too. Salva continued to run, but as he took each step he asked himself, where am I going? In effect of the gunshots, Salva runs into the bush with no idea where he is going, and no one to help him.
One survival challenge that proves Salva's persistence is his uncle dying. This challenge must have been hard for Salva to overcome because the closest person to him just died in front of his eyes. “As Salva watched, one of the men aimed his gun at Uncle. Three shots rang out. Then the men ran away.” (Park 63) This evidence shows that Salva watched his Uncle die, but he still goes on. As you can see this proves Salva’s persistence by saying he saw his uncle die in front of his eyes but he still finds the courage and strength to go on.
" Long Walk To Water" is a book written by Sue Pork that is about a girl named Nya who has to walk hours to get water. Every day for one and a half years Nya had to travel a extremely long walk to get dirty water that would soon almost kill her family. An example how it was hard Nya is every night she had to bring home two gourds of heavy muddy water, She would never have enough time to go to school and get an education that she has always dreamed of because of the long walk. So the days kept going on, Nya getting water everyday and getting home at night. Until one day Nya sister, Akeer was sick from the water, her stomach hurt and Nya's family didn't know if they had enough money to go to the doctor. Akeer was sick and in so much
Throughout A Long Walk to Water, Salva goes through many struggles and hardships. Perseverance and hope were some things that helped Salva survive through them. Salva always had hope that his family was out there somewhere throughout the years he was separated from them. His hope was one of the things that kept him going throughout his hardest times. Salva also had many moments of perseverance. Moreover, Salva’s journey through the Akobo desert is a superb example of Salva’s perseverance. Salva had suffered from hunger, dehydration, and the loss of a toenail, but he kept going at a stable pace with the help of his uncle. Salva has portrayed hope and perseverance many times throughout the story.
One of the varied survival factors that Salva faced was independence. The loss of his family's presence that was caused by the Civil war. Salva then joined a massed group with multiple unfamiliar faces, he must be independent and strive to survive in a group of strangers and varied environmental struggles. Salva had uncertainty of finding his family which meant he had to hope to find them, but before that he needs to provide for himself. Fortunately Salva soon identified his uncle in the group of refugees. Weeks past and while being weak and desperate for resources in the Akobo desert, the tragedy of his uncle, who has assisted the group with safety and food for long enough to become the leader was killed by Nuer soldiers. When he arrived at
In the text, it is stated that, “The time for grief was short, and the walking began soon after dark. Despite the numbness in his heart, Salva was amazed to find himself walking faster and more boldly than he had before.” (65), which means Salva tries to do what would make his uncle proud. This shows that Salva is strong because he didn’t get scared or depressed when his uncle died, he tried to do what his uncle would have wanted. Another act of determination from Salva can be found when he spends a long time filling out paperwork to be able to go back to Sudan and see his long-lost father. The text states,“He had to get permits, fill out dozens of forms, and organize plane flights and car transport in a region where there were no airports or roads.” ( 101). This shows that Salva is trying to do something that seems impossible, and that will require great perseverance, just to see his family again. A third and final example of how tenacious Salva is is when he escapes in a river despite the crocodiles that live in it and leads a huge group of boys to a new camp. On page 79, “More crocodiles were launching themselves off the banks. The rain, the mad current, the bullets, the crocodiles, the welter of arms and legs, the screams, the blood...He had to get across somehow.”. This shows that Salva knows he has to take risks to
Salva now traveling with the group, during his journey he meets new friends such as Buksa and Marial, and even finding his Uncle. During the walk, Salva found out that they were going to Ethiopia, another country. Many of the people died during this time such as Marial. The text says, “He clung to Uncle like a baby or a little boy….. Marial was gone… If it hadn’t been for Uncle, Salva might have gone crazy with fear.” (40) Salva cannot make it alone in this journey, without Uncle to calm him down, Salva could have lost it. Uncle’s support was the reason why the group did not leave him or treat him with disrespect, Uncle was like the leader of the group. But when Uncle’s dies as he was shot by thieves, everything changed for Salva. The text states, “Now that Salva was without Uncle’s care and protection, the group’s attitude towards him changed. Once again, they grumbled that he was too young and small, that he might slow them or start crying again, as he had in the desert.” (65) Though it gave him sorrow and pain, it also gave him determination. It also gave determination and a will stronger than ever to survive and go to Ethiopia. Especially with group’s attitude toward Salva changed he had to be strong or he would never survive. Salva made it to Ethiopia, but after six years Salva and the other people were chased of the refugee there and was made to cross the river. The text says, “The soldiers were forcing them into the
After reading the novel and accounts of the experiences of the people of Southern Sudan during and after the Second Sudanese Civil War, write an essay that addresses the theme of survival by answering the question: What factors made survival possible for Salva in A Long Walk to Water?
Early in the novel, Salva is clearly terrified, but still strong emotionally. Salva, courages and hopeful. Has started his life by hearing a gun shot,
