The word on the hill is that if Republicans don’t cave and fund Obama’s DHS amnesty scheme that they will be blamed by the people and pay for it at the polls. Where have we heard that before? Back in 2013 the government was partially shutdown for 16 days over funding fight that centered around Obamacare. Republicans eventually folded and Barry got his boondoggle fully funded. The argument at the time was that Republicans would be blamed for the shutdown and 2014 would be a disaster, even to the point of Democrats retaking control of the House. Of course, we know what happened. A historic ass kicking by the Repubs not only increased their numbers in the House, but gave them the Senate. Fast forward to 2015 where a DHS bill that includes Obama’s …show more content…
Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) eliminated filbusters for most executive branch nominations, a maneuver known as the “nuclear option,” which drew widespread criticism from Republicans. All McConnell has to do is ditch the rule that the Dems had no problem doing when they were in control. Remember the passing of Obamacare? Maybe Mitch McConnell doesn’t understand that if you play by the rules and the other side is cheating, you will lose. That’s what is happening now. But instead of flexing the muscle given to them by the voters, Senate Republicans are starting to call for folding once again, in essence rewarding Obama’s illegal actions-once again. The same old faces are in the forefront too. Lindsay gramnesty Graham is warning the GOP will pay dearly for not passing what the Democrats are referring to as a clean bill, complete with Obama’s executive criminality. Legalizing illegal aliens, putting them to work, rewarding them with tax credits and ushering in family members from their home country somehow doesn’t sound like homeland security to me. In fact, it sounds like homeland insecurity. But we know that gang of 8 Graham wants that amnesty to go through. He is well aware of the demographic engineering taking place in this country and apparently thinks he’s going to benefit from it. Well, he may in the short term, but for conservatives that come after him it will be a wasteland of third world socialism, cheered, fought for and championed by the likes …show more content…
Now we get this, and it is Republicans blaming themselves with an eloquence that the Democrats could never muster. Barack Obama has broken every law and presidential protocol he could get his hands on. Harry Reid has done the same in the Senate. But when the Republicans finally gain power in Congress, they see themselves as hamstrung by the Democrats and admonish themselves for their self imposed impotence. Yes, there are those holding firm, like the Ted Cruz’ of the Senate, but those men and women are pariahs in the Republican party, with a target on their back the size of Mitch McConnell’s
“The filibuster has been used 1,300 times since 1917” and in the last “12 years [from 2010 to 1998]... the filibuster was used nearly 600 times!” This causes a massive slowdown in Congress making bills inefficient to pass. Each of these stands takes hours and hours so for using it that much is a waste of time. “There is no certain number of days that a bill has to become law, but it must be voted on in the same congressional session, or same year, that it is introduced. If it is not voted on during the session, it can be reintroduced the following year, when it must start its journey over again” and the “most popular stage for a bill to die [is] Committee of the chamber bill is introduced in”. These all point to the fact that people are abusing the right of using a filibuster to make rules they don’t like by delaying them. This realization is the start of the nuclear option, a bill that could make filibusters eliminated or almost completely limited from
Despite the years of Republican obstructionism in Congress, as well as a breathtaking lack of respect from his political opponent, President Obama reformed the healthcare and immigration system. President Obama signed the ACA into law in March 2010 and promoted a broad immigration reform. Although it did not become law, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, (DREAM Act) set the stage for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. “Immigration and Executive Action” article writes:
On January 20, 2018, the United States government shutdown when the Extension of Continuing Appropriations Act of 2018, a bill to fund the federal government, failed to pass Congress. The reason for this was due to disagreements between Democrats and Republicans on a proposed extension to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy incorporated into the bill. In response, Democrats, those who supported the DACA extension, led a filibuster in the Senate that effectively halted any legislative progress on the bill. Despite Republicans enacting a a cloture vote, a vote to forcibly end a filibuster, it failed to garner the sixty votes necessary to end the filibuster. As a result, the government shutdown will furlough thousands of federal
The filibuster is often treated as a scapegoat in American media and politics. Deadlock in Congress is better attributed to political division between uncompromising groups rather than specific procedure. As it stands, the filibuster has grown steadily more lenient since its original implementation. With this in mind, Congress has performed effectively before, doing so while encumbered by harsher constraints. Therefore, the fault of unproductivity can hardly be ascribed to procedural policy alone. With these considerations, the filibuster must be revised to ensure congressional productivity while also preserving debate and due deliberation.
Previously, Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) vowed to jam committee meetings until the Republican Party would move forward forward with Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland. Both the Republicans and Democrats have been stuck in a giant quagmire regarding Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland. The Republicans are adamantly opposed to newcomer Merrick Garland. The Democrats generally support Garland, however, some believe that he is too moderate on issues such as gun control. In order to break the stalemate, Reid pledged to seize committee meetings -- forcing the Republicans to move forward with Garland.
In 1995 President Bill Clinton and Republican House were in a stalemate. They could not agree on budget spending. The Republican House was primarily led by house speaker Newt Gingrich. Clinton and Gingrich were fighting over how the budget should be cut. Contrary to popular
It’s very clear that Harry Reid works very hard in order to position the values of Nevada in front of him. So, in order to see whether or not Senator Reid has been correctly advocating for those in Nevada, this paper will outline Harry Reid’s stances on Immigration and Health Care Reform. These two topics remain has some of the hottest and most popular contentions of debate; and its important to know every political figures stance on these points.
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, and many other congressional leaders understand fully the cost of throwing those newly insured under the bus, it is not a popular position to fall under. In order to have a bit of approval from the majority of people, President Trump has emphasized that he would keep two popular features of Obamacare, and that is allowing children to stay under their parent’s insurance up to age 26, and to offer insurance to those with pre-existing conditions without higher premiums. The GOP only want the “good” without maintaining what keeps programs like Medicaid to run, and that is the growth of the government to provide the finances.
The Obama Care is going through many changes that will impact the American nation. There are many different points of view from the political parties. Not having the same view of the whole matter of the situation makes it difficult to know what the expectations are. Instead of viewing from a different perspective and thinking how the population is going to benefits, these people that are in power are not thinking of what is best for the nation ,especially for the elderly, children and people in poverty which will be affected adversely by these changes.
Since June 6, 2009, President Barack Obama has told the American public numerous times, “If you like your health care plan, you 'll be able to keep your health care plan.” The public later found out that this was not the case. If your health care plan did not satisfy the minimum federal requirements, then you will disinherit your plan and, you must find another one. House republicans have tried to repeal the bill almost 40 times because they claim it is a major threat to the economic health of the nation. Despite all of the political rhetoric about Obamacare over the past few years, a majority of Americans do not know what it is and how it affects them. While Obamacare does attempt to amend some of the
In an article published by The Atlantic, the main topic being discussed is the Republican Party’s inability to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. The political actors involved in the repeal of Obamacare are the Republicans who are wanting to repeal the act, the Democratic party who is fighting the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, as well as President Trump and GOP leaders who are trying to influence votes. The Republican Party was faced with difficulty gaining numbers in support for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. This is shocking considering that the Republican party was “Handed unified control of the federal government for only the third time since World War II” (Berman 2017). This statement alone shows the overwhelming
June, 2014 House Majority leader Eric Cantor would lose his bid for re-election to a relatively underwhelming opponent Dave Brat a Tea Party-backed economics professor. This primary “upset” (Martin, June 2014) is considered one of the biggest upsets in political history. Cantor who had raised roughly 5.4 million dollars in campaign funds found himself down by eleven percent to Brat who had only been able to raise roughly two hundred thousand for his own campaign. While Cantor continuously criticized Brat for being soft on immigration and contending that he supported what critics call “amnesty for immigrants in the country illegally” found little support from the constituents of his district. While on the other Hand Brat found his message resonating
One of the main reasons why Obamacare is not working is because, insurance companies are pulling out of the Obamacare marketplace or going out of business, this is due to the government not reimbursing the companies as they promised. The article, “Beneficiaries Reflect Health Law Strengths and Faults” published on October 20, 2016 argues that the “Obama Administration, thwarted by Republican opponents in Congress, has paid out
The blocking of legislation is nothing new to the Republican party. According to the article Why Washington’s Tied Up in Knots, Republicans have been blocking legislation since the late nineteen sixties, where they blocked a little less than ten percent of major legislation using the filibuster tactic. The filibuster was a rare thing to behold, on average only occurring once every ten years, until during Bill Clinton's term in which nearly fifty eight filibusters had been enacted by the Republican party. The number of filibusters has nearly doubled in just the past year alone, with a whopping one thirty eight filibusters (United States Senate), all instigated by the Republican party to block as many of President Barack Obama's initiatives as possible, including the delay and possible destruction of the all important health care bill.
Greg Abbott’s belief on DACA, like many others, is that, “the issue should be handled by Congress,
