People were jumping excitedly around, pumping their fists as they chanted USA. Blue party streamers flew in the air as his supporters flooded the streets cheering. Millions were sitting on the edge of their couches as Wolf Blitz announces the predicted President Elect in 2008: Barack Obama. After an 8 year Republican-led presidency riddled with turmoil and heartbreaks, the people breathe a sigh of relief as they ready themselves to write the next chapter of their country’s history. The way in which power is obtained and maintained differs greatly depending on the country. In our democratic America, political power can only be obtained and maintained through a perfect balance of pleasing both the general public and special interest groups, due to the fact that they both influence the decisions of political figures in separate ways. While Obama may have come into power through the support of Americans in 2008, it would be an uphill battle to maintain his power in an increasingly divisive country controlled by extreme special interest groups.
In democratic states such as America, citizens pride themselves in

The American Constitution, written in 1787, is rooted in the belief that “the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged”. As a result, for a politician to gain power in a democratic manner, it is essential that the general public votes for that politician in an election, because the person who wins the majority of the votes has the right to preside over matters in America. Historically, this can be seen in the establishment and subsequent removal from a position of power in Haiti after the Haitian Revolution. Once the French were expelled from Haiti, General Jean-Jacques Dessalines decreed that all Haitians were black; this created a strong sense of nationalism that was used to persuade people to approve
The President is a special position with special powers especially the US president. My initial wonder has always been why would someone run for the president of a country and what actually made someone like President Obama run for the presidency of the US. Even though none of this week’s reading focused on that. Nevertheless, there were interesting dimensions to the readings on the topic.
The COO of Riordan manufacturing Hugh McCauley would like to combine the existing variety of tools in use into a single multi integrated application. Riordan Manufacturing wants to take advantage of the more sophisticated state of the art information systems that has already existed in the human resources department (Riordan Manufacturing, 2006). The information gathered in this document the information gathering techniques and the very sophisticated planned design methods that will be used and explained in great detail. The president uses informal powers to set and enact a legislative agenda, to do executive orders, send out troops without a declaration of war, make executive agreements, create and use bureaucracy, and make legislative proposals. Out of all the informal powers presidents tend to use the executive power the most.
Many argue that the most powerful branch in government is the Executive Branch. The President is considered as the most influential and the most important position in the U.S. government. However, the powers granted to Presidents and the prerogative they have exerted are not listed in the Constitution but instead have been adapted and expanded upon by each President. Although the Constitution does not define the powers of the President, it has defined Presidential powers in terms of peace, war, and emergency. A recent expansion of Presidential power, exerted by Bush and then Obama was this “War on Terror (WOT)”. President Barack Obama and his predecessor President George W. Bush have both expanded the powers of the President through the
The position of president has evolved in the almost quarter millennium since the framers created the Constitution. The main issues facing the framers included the position’s structure, independence, and power. Although the modern presidency is different from the framers’ design, they would approve of it, since the concerns that the framers had with the executive still have been prevented. When creating the presidency, one issue the framers decided quickly was the structure, particularly having one president. This satisfied the needs of both the Conservative and Radical Republicans, by allowing for quick action, while still providing clear accountability.
America lies in the wake of the impending presidential election, which has been shrouded in controversy from its infancy. FBI investigations, leaked emails, private recordings, rape allegations, and indubitable untruths have pledged both front-runners. Despite the foul taste left in the mouth of many Americans by Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton, they have come out victorious in their campaign to represent their respective party as the nominee for president. While it was once widely believe that the American people democratically elect the president of the United States, through current influences such as the media, Internet, and growing population an exuberant amount of Americans believe that their vote no longer counts, thus posing the question who’s really in control of the electoral process? In the past, the call to question of the integrity of the electoral processes was strictly reserved for the most devout conspiracy theorist, but with the pullulating concerns over super delegates, average sound mind Americans are not sure the full truth is being told. Has America been fed at noble lie? A simple answer yes, a more complex answer America has been fed a misconception disguised as a lie.
The election of Barack Obama as the president of the United States surprised Americans as much as it did the world. The first African American and non-white to be in the White House, Barack Obama symbolized a major historical event, another step-forward toward racial equality in the history of America. Civil rights activists, experts in the racial conflict of the U.S., and many liberal citizens believed that Obama’s election means the realization of the ideas of black civil rights leaders, the completion of the Civil Rights Movement, the beginning of a post-racial society, and the downfall of
The right to vote is indispensable to any democracy because it is the means by which citizens can collectively decide issues. Nowhere in the Constitution of 1791 does it explicitly guarantee the right to ballot box for women and minority groups, thus, excluding the majority from participating in the political process. Indeed, only 6% of the American population voted in President Washington’s re-election in 1792 (Lepore 2). Article I, Section 2, Clause 1 of the Constitution defers voting eligibility to state legislatures (The Heritage Foundation 3), implicitly condoning the disfranchisement of women, minorities, and destitute whites. Although one can argue the Constitution of 1791 merely reflected the white supremacist, patriarchal society of its time, the reality remains that the significant groups were excluded from participating in the political process.
The American Presidency is undoubtedly one of the most widely recognized popular icons throughout the world. Although to most foreigners or those who have never resided in the United States or know little of its history, the executive branch of government may seem to be as dull and unyielding as the rest of the American politics, for those few rare individuals who have taken the time to examine and closely scrutinize this office of the American political system and its recent history, quite the opposite will be said. Unlike Congressional or local elections where typically a number of individuals of the same ideological background must be elected in order for a particular issue to be
In the year 1531 the famous political philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli’s wrote a treatise entitled The Prince. It explains the proper guidelines for a prince to successfully lead a republic. Although this sixteenth century politician’s main purpose was to unite a separate Italy, his political theories have been taken into deep consideration and are commonly exercised in politics today. If Machiavelli were alive today he would agree that qualities of the current president Barack Obama coincide with his prince-like standards and make him the ideal candidate for the 2012 Presidential Election.
Even in matters of national security the president has secured new and immense power by way of the USA PATRIOT act, which, remains unfettered to this day. It would be appropriate to compare the process our leaders undertake to the ancient tale of Icarus. We find that often, our presidents simply fly to close to the sun in their quest for power. This is most apparent in their abilities to harness the power of the media, build a co-operative relationship with congressional law makers, or to implement domestic policy. In these areas, one president or another has enjoyed some level of power and success for a time; that success however, would not be absolute. Often, the power they wield, which they have empower to help them lead, would be threatened by a plethora of oppositional actors and stimuli in the political field, some of the oppositional forces would
Presidents of the United States of America have been around since the country became it’s own. Each president is given certain responsibilities and rights. Presidential power is listed in the Constitution but since then, there’s been room for more responsibilities to come into play. The powers exercised in the modern world surpass those included in the Constitution. Today, the president has a number of offices and departments serving under him. These institutions help keep the government together and everything running smoothly. The presidents rely on a number of other things. Some include elections, political parties, interest groups, the media, and public opinion. There are different kinds of powers granted to the president. While some
We are on the same page with this topic these trends are scary and unfortunate sports are supposed to be fun. I think the performance ethic should be secondary especially in youth sports because many of the athletes are just learning the basics and success should be measured on an individual basis instead of wins and losses.
Max weber identified three types of authority found in social organizations. These three are traditional authority, legal- rational authority, and charismatic authority. The authority that I believe closely represents our president is legal- rational authority which is defined as “authority based on laws, rules, and procedures, not in the heredity or personality of any individual leader. Modern presidencies and parliaments are built upon this type of authority ” (Ferris, 2014). I believe President Obama is recognized mostly for this because what he does is based on what the laws say, his presidency is not based on his emotions. It’s built upon what the people want and what they believe he can do for the country.
“Thou shalt not kill” the bible says, yet since 1976 including 2017 1463 people have been executed in the United States. Since capital punishment was first put on the books in 18th century B.C. capital punishment has often been surrounded by controversy ranging from the moral and religious concerns like above to economic issues. However despite all this debate and increasing disapproval, the death penalty is still legal in 31 states and used by the federal government today. The death penalty even made it through a moratorium by the supreme court from 1968 through 1977 to determine the death penalty's constitutionality. This persistence of capital punishments use throughout the United States despite its controversy would not be possible without one thing however, supporters and politicians belief that executions deter murder. This notion seems like a common sense conclusion, people do not want to die so they would not kill if it put them at risk of being killed. Thus, the hypothesis of this research is that the death penalty is a successful deterrent to murder. For the purpose of this research the death penalty will mean “... the lawful infliction of death as a punishment … used in the United States … carried out by one of five lawful means: electrocution, hanging, lethal injection, gas chamber, and firing squad” ( Gale Encyclopedia of American Law). Another other important term to define is murder which for this paper will mean, “ The unlawful killing of another human being
