The quote that shows the full cycle of Oedipus’ life till death is, “O sunlight of no

light! Once you were mine” (214). This quote is said by Oedipus when he has accepted his fate

and is about to go to his death. This quote presents the tragic life of Oedipus who created the

self-fulfilling prophecy for himself. In other words, Oedipus presents a tragedy progressed in

the equivalent forces of fate and free will. The self-fulfilling prophecy is naturally driven by

Oedipus’s choices of wrong decisions compelled by his pride, egoism, temper and then later

regret. This makes him most responsible for the tragedy of his own downfall; however this

responsibility is also incurred by the gods and his biological parents, Jocasta and Laius.

After enhancing his prideful personality from conquering the

Sphinx by solving the riddle, Oedipus was presented with the choice of taking the murdered

king’s throne. He could have refused, rejecting marrying the previous king’s wife; his own

mother. Instead, he further fulfills another part of the prophecy, directly caused by his actions.

During the plague in Thebes, which could only discontinue by finding Lauis’ murderer,

Oedipus even curses the killer in front of Creon without realizing that he himself is the killer.

Oedipus again demonstrates his egoism and pride with his reactionary decisions he makes and

ultimately ends up cursing himself further creating the self-fulfilling prophecy. After realizing

that he was the killer and finding his wife/mother dead, he blinds himself.

“O sunlight of no light! Once you were mine,” is the quote that Oedipus shouts when

finally accepting his reality after all his life events. The first Oedipus was the egoistic, proud,
