#1. Do the people at Nut Island represent a cohesive team? The team from Nut Island had the potential to accomplish great things. They were a very cohesive team. Cohesiveness relates to the degree to which members are attracted to and motivated to remain part of that team. A cohesive group member values his or her membership and strives to maintain a positive relationship within the group. Every person working at Nut Island wanted to be there and would not let anything get in the way of their team. When looking at only the cohesiveness of a team, Nut Island would be a good example. The team at Nut Island should be compared to the definition of a high-performance team. Nut Island team members had different skills. They were able to get along and work together. They really enjoyed working there even when they were up to their necks in sludge. Members worked together to keep equipment working. They found ways to keep the plant running after senior management stopped paying attention. Nut Island employees formed a highly creative team also. When they ran out of chemicals they devised a plan to get more. Instead of calling management they asked nearby residents to complain about the odor coming from the plant. They would have a new supply of chemicals delivered to them a few days later. With the next two high-performance team components, Nut Island begins to fall short. The team lacked a purpose and the values to make them stick to that purpose. The purpose of the team was to clean up the harbor. They were supposed to treat the sewage to make it safe to be dumped out in the harbor or to be turned into fertilizer. At some point the team's purpose changed. They grew concerned with avoiding management and continuing on their own. They still tried to do their job at the sewage plant, but their knew purpose got in the way. Because they avoided management and management avoided them, Nut Island did not have the supplies they needed and their equipment was failing. They continued

In the book Outcasts United by Warren St. John a soccer team was created for and by people all over the world called the “Fugees.” The Fugees weren't a very wealthy team and didn't have very many options because of their living conditions. The fact that they continued with strict practices and harsh conditions shows they believed in commitment and staying together.

As the Nebraska Army National Guard strives to meet the recruiting, retention, and end strength mission every year. This past year our emphasis on recruiting has been in a number of areas that will benefit the RRNCO’s individual mission. One of the many ways to help achieve our mission is to have a market strategy. Through research on demographic areas, knowing our competition, having a focus and a plan, market strategy, and implementing and evaluating that plan, a target market will be easily be identified and mission goals will be obtained.
Often, cohesion is viewed from an affective perspective; as interpersonal attraction among members or to the group. However, cohesion can also be envisioned as "attraction to a collectivity" as opposed to an attraction to the individuals who make up that grouping. (Ratzburg, n.d.) It is important that every single member never work against each other but strive to work with each other toward their shared goal(s). Any negative force that threatens the team's success redirects itself into something positive as long as team members share the same purpose. Cohesiveness is a process whereby a sense of we-ness emerges to transcend individual differences and motives (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2004, p. 15). Some of the teenagers in the families did not approve of how their parents were acting on decision making. Since these people were actually neighbors in real life, these teenagers were friends with the other teens in the game. This caused problems because some of the parents were being immature and this caused the teens to rebel against their own family. In certain challenges the teens would not try as hard as they should because they disapproved of what their parents were planning. Finally, one of the mothers talked to them and explained that it was only a game and more than anything they needed to work together as a family first. The teen realized that this was more important and strived to help his team out.

This book had many highlights throughout the context and I would highly recommend it to leaders of a corporation or of that of a team like setting. This book offered many great implications of the model and how to use it in many diverse settings when trying to build and manage successful teams.
