Nurture In Lord Of The Flies

In the Lord of the Flies, we encounter a group of boys who have been stranded on an uninhabited island after a plane crash. They are English school boys who have been taught proper manners and understand what it means to be under authority. They demonstrate this by their initial election of a chief and the establishment of a certain degree of rules and order. However, this falls apart very quickly and the boys’ sense of right and wrong are abandoned. What was the driving force behind the savagery and chaos that developed as the structure they established deteriorated? Was it the environmental factors they were cast into, or was it an innate biological instinct that drove them to the edge?

Simon fainted and when he woke up, he went to the mountain and found that there was no beast just a man in a parachute. He rushed back to tell the others, who were at the feast, but was ambushed and killed. The next day Ralph, Piggy, Sam and Eric discuss what they had done and they all feel remorse. Later that night Jack and his hunters attacked Ralph and his followers and stole Piggy’s glasses. The next day the boys went to retrieve the glasses and in a fight between Ralph and Jack, Piggy was killed and Sam and Eric were captured. That night Ralph was told by Sam and Eric that he would be hunted the next day and most likely killed as a double-sided sharpened stick has already been made. That morning Sam and Eric told Jack that Ralph was hiding. Jack then set the forest on fire in the hope of bringing out Ralph. The novel concluded when Ralph, running for his life, confronted a British naval officer who came ashore to check out the smoke on the island.

Nurture, historically was referred to as the care given to children by their parents, with a mothers role being of particular importance. This term is now regarded as any environmental factor including external family, their peers, as well as extending influences such as media.

Piggy's death is the symbolization of the breakdown of order and the beginning of disunity on the island. This breakdown of order is clearly delineated in the book. Jack sees the chance to kill Ralph right after Piggy is killed because Ralph is vulnerable, and alone against Jack and his tribe. Jack takes it upon himself to declare himself as the leader, “I’m chief!” (Page 181). Jack sees the opportunity to proclaim himself as leader of the boys after Piggy dies and the conch is destroyed. During this, all of the boys on the island gather to hunt and release their inner manliness. Simon is the only one who is not participating in the celebration because he is in the mountains searching for the beast. When he returns, he is mistaken for the beast and is ripped into shreds by all the other boys. “There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws” (Golding 169). During the attack, the boys lose all sense of civilization because they become swept up in the frenzy, including Ralph and Piggy. The lack of authority results in Simon’s death, which becomes a destruction point in the boys as this unleashes the primitive cruelty in them. In result, his death becomes a symbol of the boy’s downfall in innocence. This is because unlike the other boys, Simon is a sensitive character. When he dies, all hope of morality dies with him, since he is seen as a Christ like figure in the novel. Secondly, Piggy is murdered in chapter 11 by Roger when he is hit with a boulder and falls off the mountainside to his death during an argument between Ralph and Jack. “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. Piggy, saying nothing, with no time for even a grunt, travelled through the air sideways from the rock, turning over as he went” (200). Piggy’s death is the first directly caused by the boys that they see the aftermath of. However, the body is swept away into the sea, just like Simon’s, thus the boys feel they can not be held responsible and do not learn their lesson. After the death of Piggy all innocence and reason are lost and the boys become completely trapped in their animalistic ways when they complete an ultimate act of savagery; hunting for a fellow human being. The “tribe” goes to the extent of setting fire to almost the entire island in order to snake out Ralph, who must now run for is life from people who he once relied on and considered his friends. Humans are shaped through nurture in a way they their experiences and what people tell them could change the person that they are. Meaning, if a person experiences a bad situation, this might affect how they act from now on. One book that showed this scenario was the Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. Golding wrote about a main character named Ralph who was left on an island with a bunch of boys and barely any supplies. On this island, he was first elected leader and then everything went downhill from there. This character was put through countless exhausting troubles and complications during the the story. Relying on the theme that humans are shaped through nurture, the book proved that Ralph did change because his experiences showed that he lost his innocence and his leadership qualities were diminished.

After a series of events, such as the previously-mentioned shelter conflict and the creation of the beast, as well as the pig-killing dance at Jack’s camp, the deaths of Simon and Piggy, and the breaking of the conch shell (the only remaining symbol of order on the island), by the end of the story, all order is lost and the boys have turned into complete savages. They ruthlessly tried to kill or escape from each other until, thankfully, an adult marine arrived on the island who brought back peace and order. Nurture refers to society, family, and church that impacts who we become. Some examples are how we are raised, where we are raised and our experiences during childhood. If a person is raised in a religious setting they will probably have those same morals and beliefs when they are older. If they were in foster system that will effect who they become depending on their experience in foster care.

Many can argue that the reason the boys in Golding's Lord of the Flies turned savage is because they were really scared of each other. But that is not the case. Human instincts played a huge role in the outcome of their drastic change. Psychologically, Jack's hunger caused him to become aggressive towards the boys, making them aggressive as well. The lack of contact with the outside world affects the group of boys, causing them to be afraid of outsiders. Jack's tribe uses war paint to hide their identities and to make them feel better about their wrong doings, which results in more catastrophes. So, human instincts not only affect who they are, but their actions as well.

For example, individuals who have a predisposition are not into crime scene. People who are born with genetic disorders tend to be more controlled by therapists and medications. On the other hand, nurture is more focused on the impact of “behavior, education, society and environment” (Karen Hart), it is the final determinant of how our genes are expressed. A person’s development is formed more by nurture. For example, in the case of Ethan Couch, lawyers defend their client as not being taught right from wrong.

While many believe that we are both nature and nurture, some still takes sides and argue whether we are nature or nurture. The topic nature vs. nurture has always been debated. Nature is our inborn abilities and traits, what we are born with. Nurture take the traits we have and mold them as we mature and learn new things. Scientists argue if who we are is shaped by our genes and/or the environment. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding it focuses on a group of boys stranded on an island and their attempt to govern and take care of themselves. Most of the boys become savages. The nurture theory impacts us everyday in our environment. Everyone cares about what others think of them. One follows the current fashion. They try to be like others and start acting like them.

Both nature and nurture has influences our personal developments. An example of how nature influenced my personal development is that my dad completed high school and went to college. I think that was a big help with me because I’m doing the same thing. Some people think that nature doesn’t influence person development. People think that because your parents could have dropped out of high school, but you completed high school and went to college. Nurture also can help with personal development because the environment helps you make certain decisions. The people you hang around most are most likely to influence you. If you see your friends doing something that you know is wrong what would you do? Some people will do it too because their friends influence them to do bad things. Others will walk away because their parents are good people and they have the same good traits as their parents. In my personal development both nature and nurture influenced me. Nature because both my mom and dad are quiet people and I feel like that has influenced me because I’m quiet too. There are many other ways that they have influenced me also.
