After graduating Anacortes High school I plan on attending a four year private liberal arts university. I will be pursing a Bachelors of Science in Nursing leading to a career as a Registered Nurse. My main interest is a specialty in pediatrics. Following a month stay at Children's Hospital after enduring emergency surgery and a difficult recovery I decided nursing is what I'm meant to do. A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse that has additional education and training in diagnosing and treating illnesses in specialty areas such as family, geriatric, neonate, or pediatrics. Nurse Practitioners prescribe medication, which usually RN’s cannot do, as well as treat illnesses and administer physical exams. Nurse practitioners have a master's degree or doctorate in nursing and board certification in their specialty. A pediatric NP has higher education, skills, and training in caring for infants, children, and teens than an RN. As licensed nurse practitioners, NPs follow the policy and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act of the state in which they work. Wide reaching, nurses significantly outnumbered physicians as providers of health care often having utmost vast reach remoteness to underserved communities. Having personally lived in one of the underserved communities in my hometown Western Africa before moving to the United States of America and my life calling to be a nurse from a young age with the deep desire to make a difference. I plan to contribute and continue to contribute immensely to the underserved communities by delivering quality health care to remote regions around the world. I do volunteer service at several clinics in the Atlanta area with many well-known Emory physicians that care for homeless and underserved populations, these volunteer experiences provide me with opportunities and fulfillment to develop added headship skill and experience to meet my daily patients, needs.

Dreams are alternations of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations. They shape the emotions that we feel in reality. Within the next ten years I would like to be furthering my career in the medical field but more specifically in the unit of Neonatal Nursing. As a very family-oriented person my instincts have always been to not only to care for my needs but to also care for others. Because my mother has taught me that transitions can be fundamental and positive in reforming lives, someday I hope to hold that aptitude. Furthermore, with this ability I am looking to improve my life as well as the lives of those around me. Due to my loved ones who have raised me with such strength and courage, I have grown more with strong dedication towards becoming a gratifying individual.

I believe that I am a worthy candidate for this scholarship due to my recognition of the financial impact of college. Growing up in a single parent home has been a financially and emotionally difficult feat for my mother and myself. When I was seven years old, my father passed away from a blood clot. During his life, he served in Vietnam, where he was granted a Purple Heart after shattering his kneecap on a landmine. He was on disability, and my mother was employed as a rehabilitation nurse, the only source of income in our family. After his death, my mother and I both began to go to therapy for our grief over losing my father. Focusing on my mental health helped me accept the meaning of death, and struck my motivation to honor my father and ensure that he would be proud of me. When I grew up, we always relied on getting clothes from thrift stores to save money and cutting any unnecessary expenditures. My mother always worked to have enough money for food and comfort. I received monetary Survivor Benefits after his death until my high school graduation this past May. As mentioned before, my mother has Multiple Sclerosis, which is an unfortunately expensive illness. Shortly after her diagnosis, the rehabilitation unit of her work closed and she was left on unemployment right before my sophomore year of high school. I was not old enough to drive or work, so finances were incredibly strict. On my 16th birthday, I attended an orientation to work as a lifeguard at our local YMCA. The next day, I also got my license to eliminate transportation issues. My employment alleviated financial and emotional stress on my mother, as I was able to contribute to the bills and my personal expenses. Throughout my life, my mother has also been very dependent on alcohol to relieve stress. There were numerous times where I

I am passionate of becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I got inspired to work in this field when I interned at hospitals such as the Veterans and at Community Regional Center in the children's clinic. I have always worked with children and like being part of their lives. Ever since I volunteered at Storey Elementary After school Program with kids on their homework, it assured me that working with children is what makes me happy. Currently I am working as a Registered Nurse in the adult medical intensive care unit. A job in advanced practice will be different from the current job in many ways. I will acquire the skills and competencies required for an advance practice through my master’s level education and clinical experience. The population of focus of my care will change from adults to all ages of the lifespan. I can provide health care to all members of the family and can focus even more on health promotion and disease prevention strategies. Advance practice in a primary care area will help to identify the resources of a family as a single unit, will assist me to help families in attaining the optimal level of health. The role of a family nurse practitioner is a fundamental portion of the future of healthcare. The role is clearly not as understood by other healthcare professionals as needed which results in the disagreement if the role of a family nurse practitioner is even required for primary care. As people are getting older, the need for medical professionals that can provide patient care to our ever growing population increases. The need for the role of family nurse practitioners will grow too. The role of the family nurse practitioner, the ability of the FNP to be able to transition into their role.

Pursuing nursing, specifically Registered Nursing (RN) was never a question, I have always known that is what I would become. Registered Nurses work for patient care, and explains and teaches patients about their health care needs. Nursing has been in my family now for three generations and I am here to carry out the legacy. It is important to understand the education and training requirements, skills and talents needed, salary benefits offered, and the duties when committing to this career.

I became a bilingual when my and I move the United States. I was born in India speaking Gujarati as my premier language. I can speak three languages including Gujarati , Hindi , and English. I used my bilingual skills when I am volunteering or working to help the staff understand what the person wants.

I understand that my family and I are not living below the poverty line or fighting over bus fare, but this scholarship will still greatly benefit me. When my sister filed the FAFSA, she was not given an extraordinary amount of money. She had to take out loans to pay for her education. My family and I cannot afford to take out any more loans. In 2014, we lost our house due to foreclosure. For two years, every penny we earned went to our savings account to save up for a house. When I was fourteen years old, I had saved up five-thousand dollars for college. I decided to give the money to my parents in order to buy our house. I am a senior in high school, and I have not managed to recoup my money. Meanwhile, my parents are tied down to a thirty-year mortgage. In addition, my grandfather, who lives in Mexico, has been diagnosed with depression. My parents have been sending money over there in order to pay for his care and medicine. Trying to find the right treatment for him has made money a bit tight in my household.

As a course of life, people are born, raised, and go to school until the time comes where they need to make a decision about their career. In fact, most careers have one common theme among them---Help or give back to community and society. I for one have chosen a career in nursing to help people and give back to my community. Other than the fact that I want to help people, a career in nursing will expand my horizons, give me career opportunities, and job satisfaction.

My upbringing in a small rural Maine community has shaped who I have become and has defined what is important to me in many ways. Having the opportunity to enrich the lives of the those who live in my home state, as well as those who are passing through, is my purpose and priority. I am passionate about cultivating a practice which focuses on the various individual needs of my patients physically, mentally and emotionally.
