I have had the pleasure of being a member of RHA (residency hall association) because of my position on campus as a resident assistant since 2014. I’m also a part of Colleges Against Cancer and NSCS. I volunteer at the Humane Society of Boone, and also am volunteering at the annual Red Cross homecoming blood drive here at Appalachian State University this year.
In 250 words or less, please share what has drawn you to an academic medical center and the residency program, and where you see yourself in three years regarding job and type of position.
Being able to work at a well-known academic teaching hospital like Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center would be an incredible experience for a number of reasons. What draws me to an academic hospital and the residency program itself is to have the incredible privilege of working with and learning from some of the most experienced and skilled nurses at one of the nation’s top-ranked hospitals. Working at Wake Forest Baptist I would also be exposed to cutting-edge research and medical care that I could possibly have the opportunity to witness and possibly be a part of. In three years, if given the opportunity to be a part of the nursing ICU residency, I would hopefully still be working at Wake Forest Baptist with the hopes of going back to school in the years that follow. I would love the opportunity to work at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to grow and develop into a competent, skilled, and experienced ICU nurse.

During my high school career, I have participated in a large majority of the clubs available to me, and held officer positions in most of them as well. In both the National Honor Society and Medical Connections Clubs I am a member of two and four years respectively, and was elected treasurer of both for the 2017-2018 school year. National Honor Society has also given me many community service opportunities, including helping with the Night to Shine organization and a volunteering at a local nursing home.

I am applying for the position of Nurse Extern at your facility and I meet the requirements set by your facility. I am in the process of earning my nursing degree and I will be graduating in December 2016. This position will help me gain the experience needed to take a step into the professional nursing world. This hands-on experience will be essential in helping me prepare myself to work as a nurse in the future.
Outside of my studies, I’m a member of 3 clubs: HOSA, Key Club, and National Honor Society. I am vice president of HOSA, serving as such for my second year, making this year my third year as an officer. I’m also a member of the Rome High School band for my 7th year in band. I was selected as a section leader for the mellophones this year.
Over the past two years (2014-2016) I have participated in the National Junior Honors Society. As a member, I commit to completing community service and to learning among my peers in order to develop into a superior leader. I have taken part in activities such as fundraisers, team building activities, and several forms of community services such as working in a soup kitchen, daycares and organizing social events. Recently, I volunteered for a week as a vendor at a temple in Tacoma, raising money for the establishment during the Cambodian New Year festival.

Over the past year, I have served my school and community in many different ways. Whether it be through volunteering or participating in organizations that work to make changes in the lives of others. I try to stay involved in my environment. Currently, I am a student at Rockford Lutheran High School. With the multitude of clubs, my school offers, I am able to interact with other club members to promote student participation. Every year we participate in drives and fundraisers. In Key Club, each year we put together solider boxes. We collect a variety of small items and send hand packaged boxes to our fighting soldiers, as a gift for christmas. Other drives that I partake in are the canned food drives for the local food pantries, and the clothing drives to give winter clothing to those less fortunate. This helps to provide this vulnerable population with warmth during the cold winter months.
I was raised in a third world country where only few people living in major cities had access to health care, whereas the majority residing in suburbs and rural areas struggled to find a doctor. I believe that health care should be accessible to everyone regardless of his or her place of residence. I chose Morehouse College of Medicine because its mission resonates with my goals of serving the underserved populations and improving the well-beings of disadvantaged communities. Morehouse is a leading medical school in the nation in community engagement and public service. Its mission and vision intersects with the core values that I have been striving to implement and achieve since the moment I decided to become a doctor. I am also very much dedicated in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), as we also do a lot of service projects including March of Dimes throughout all factions of FBLA and in our community with Blue Zones (with the help of our advisor, Dana Lampe). In the 2014-2015 school year, I was the 3rd most dedicated member in FBLA, which was determined be a point system throughout the year based on volunteering, going to meetings, and etc..
Over the course of high school, I have engaged in my community in various ways. For one, I have donated my time volunteering for health-related organizations that promote good causes, such as the “Heart Walk” for the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer's Walk. Over the summer of 2017, I assisted nurses in maternal fetal medicine with clerical work through the VolunTeen program
Increasing acuity and rising complexity of acute-care patient populations, lack of a standard national nurse residency program, low job satisfaction scores of graduate nurses, and a high turnover rate of graduate nurses are a few of the important factors that led to the creation of the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) national nurse residency program (NRP).
The concept of nurse residency programs is not by any means a new concept. Programs have been grounded on Benner’s theory of novice to expert. Benner established the notation that nurses develop skills and understanding of job skills over time through an education also with hands on experiences. She noted a nurse passes through five levels of proficiency: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert and was generally reached only after years of gaining experience as a practicing nurse. A nurse residency can facilitate new nurse graduates to transition smoothly through the levels and sometimes even more quickly. As a new graduate a nurse residency program is very appealing, not only does it help mentor you through novice period but also helps develop competent nurses for the organization.
Contributing to my school and community is a true passion. I am involved in programs like the Red Cross, Angel Tree created by The Salvation Army, and Olive Garden’s Pasta For Pennies. My school hosted a Red Cross blood drive, and I was responsible for promoting the event to individuals within our school. We had a total of two hundred students donate blood. We helped save a total of six hundred lives! I also assisted the Program Angel Tree by promoting the program among the student organizations within my school. Our involvement has helped hundreds of less fortunate children and seniors receive necessities and gifts! As a team, the student council also collects spare change from students in our school. Our collaboration with Olive Garden has helped fund the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's School & Youth campaign. I am truly glad that my contributions have made an impact within my community and society! My strong involvement in extracurricular activities has helped me become knowledgeable, principled, and a risk-taker.
