Nursing research is a promising aspect of the nursing profession as it has a large influence on current and future nursing practice.It provides evidence-based care that promotes quality health care outcomes. Even though nurses play different roles in various health care settings, the primary role of a professional nurse is to act as a patient advocate and provide quality care through evidence obtained from research. As I mentioned before, evidence-based care standardizes patient care and reduces unpredictable health outcomes.It combines research evidence and clinical expertise which help to promote individualization of patient care by incorporating patient preferences.Evidence-based practice in health care institutions boosts nurses adaptability, skills, critical thinking,problem-solving and decision-making.Quality care and evidence-based practice help to reduce health care expenses and increase higher job satisfaction among nurses, which eventually helps in job retention in hospitals.Adopting evidence-based practice help nurses to use available resources efficiently and effectively, instead of being wasted in the process of making ways of providing competent customer care.Quality improvement increases patient satisfaction.The nursing research builds the scientific foundation for clinical
Evidence-based practice is relied on by professional nurses in order for them to make informed decisions as well as apply critical thinking skills directly to the patient care they provide. The research process allows the nurse to ask and answer questions systematically to ensure the decisions they make are based on sound science. Research provides the evidence needed for nurses to practice based off scientific evidence rather than by tradition (Houser, 2013). Nursing research is fundamental to the practice and is the central principle that defines the nursing profession.
Evidence based practice is an integral part of nursing care. According to the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, evidence based practice is defined as, “the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about patient care.” (AMSN) The use of evidence based practice has drastically improved patient outcomes, increased quality and safety of healthcare, and reduced costs for facilities. (Melnyk, 2016) In this paper I will provide the history of evidence based practice, how it has already been incorporated and impacted healthcare, and why it is important to nursing and healthcare as a whole.
Evidence-based practice is important because it let nurses know what they are doing, why they are doing it and how they can do it well. Also, evidence-based practice is a process of professional learning, even in training the nurse must know how to ask the right
Nurses are responsible in providing holistic, quality care to their clients. In order to effectively provide such care Boswell and Cannon (2009, p. 2 & 7) states that nurses must base their provision of care on the most current, up-to-date health information available and sound nursing knowledge. This is where evidence-based practice (EBP) comes in. Polit and Beck (2010, p. 4) defined EBP as "the use of the best clinical evidence in making patient care desicions". This usually comes from research conducted by nurses and other healthcare professionals. Thus it is pertinent that research reports are critically analyzed.
According to The American Nurses Association (ANA) Evidenced-based practice is a "scholarly and systematic problem-solving paradigm that results in the delivery of high quality healthcare" (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 65). Through the use of evidence-based practice nurse and other health care professional have the ability to create clinical decisions, which allows clinical questions to be answered and aid in quality improvement. Furthermore creating a safe, efficient, productive environment for patients and staff that may result in improving patient outcomes and reduce expenses. Nursing research helps health care providers provide evidence-based practice, which may result in quality improvement (Rebar & Gersch, 2015).
Recently nurse scientists conduct research that informs evidence-based interventions to promote health and manage illness in various healthcare settings. Therefore, nursing is no longer viewed as a task-oriented discipline, but as a science-oriented discipline which contributes to the research and discovery of new and innovative approaches to improving health outcomes. As stated by the Institute of Medicine: “The impending crisis, which has been foreseen for decades, is now upon us” and the time to act is now. The nursing scientist must continue to conduct researchers to address the challenges associated with providing quality health care through excellence in science and practice and through training the next generation of leaders in healthcare research and
Nursing improves when Evidence Based Research findings can be utilized and implemented by nurses in their daily practice. J. Dracup (2006) stated what some nurses had identified as barriers to Evidence Based Research, namely: “accessibility of research findings, anticipated outcomes of using research, organizational support to use research, and support from others to use research.” Dracup believed that “evidence-based practice must include an assessment of the available resources” since the cost of implementation is yet another barrier and “will not be adopted if resources are insufficient to incorporate them into the daily routine” nursing care. G. Mitchell (1999) raised “ the lack of sufficient meaningful research” as an additional barrier.
In healthcare, evidence based practice (EBP) has grown and become important in providing the best quality care possible to patients. There are numerous ways to collect and use the research in the nursing profession. Studies are constantly being done to help better nursing and all of the healthcare field in order to help patients live better and maintain their health. There are different types of research such as qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative uses the human experience or something that has been lived by someone and quantitative examines for meaning and goes more in depth to research things and strives to test a hypothesis or makes use of statistical data to answer research questions (LoBiondo-Wood
According to Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper & Bucher (2014), “Evidence-based practice is a problem-solving approach to clinical decision making. It involves the use of the best available evidence in combination with clinical expertise and patient preferences and values to achieve desired patient outcomes.” Using evidence based practice in nursing is extremely important, because evidence-based practice is the result of others trying a practice one way but needing to change some of the guidelines to make the practice safer and over all better for patients.
Nursing research has been a part of nursing practice for many years, consisting of both qualitative and quantitative research; it is essential in guiding nursing practice. Many nurses have a baseline understanding of research in general, but it is important for the researcher to understand their own values and beliefs when determining the type of research they will be performing. By understanding the differences between epistemology, methodology, and methods, the researcher can confidently conduct a valid research project.
Evidence-based practice is important because it lets nurses know what they are doing, why they are doing it and how they can do it better based on scientific research. Then evidence-based practice is a process of professional learning, even in training the nurse must know how to ask the right questions, how to critically appraise evidence, how to make clinical decisions and how to solve the clinical problems. Then the evidence-based practice is not only required for the nurses to have knowledge but also the nurses need to use this knowledge to identify evidence to inform practice and how you might subsequently assimilate this

According to an article, written by Dr. Kathleen Stevens, the development of evidence-based practice (EBP) is fueled by the increasing public and professional demand for accountability in safety and quality improvement in health care (Stevens, 2013). The author also mentioned in her article that the intended effect of EBP is to standardize healthcare practices to science and best evidence and to reduce illogical variation in care,

The harmony among clinical and research orientation is essential to professional nurses as they dynamically enhance the nursing’s scientific knowledge by way of research. Evidence facilitates advancements in nursing and inhibits the usage of unjustified nursing errors and practices. Finally, evidence-based practice substitutes usage of trial and error and improves development, evaluation, and professional progression. Evidence-based practice is used by professional nurses for the sake of influencing the standard of care and for encouraging a self-directed nursing environment.
