In retrospect, what I learned in collaborative healthcare will be a solid foundation on which I will build my nursing leadership. To render care to the sick irrespective of their values, preferences, age, socioeconomic status, culture respect and dignity, demonstrate that the nurse leader is exhibiting compassion, ethics and knowledge. These aquacades must be continuously incorporated and utilized with professional clinical judgement and evidenced-based knowledge to yield the best patient outcomes (Finkelman, 2012).
Currently, I am two steps away from obtaining my BSN and once completed, I will pursue a Master’s Degree in Education. Since I am commitment to lifelong learning, I will equip myself with the necessary tools and resources that I need to succeed. According to (Finkleman, 2012, p.15), nurse leaders innovate, initiate, empower and compel others with their creative vision and translate that vision into action.” Therefore, from an ethical perspective I pledge to advocate for those patients who do not have a voice or a support system. Upgrading our documentation to information and informatics comes with many advantages for the health care team to improve quality and safe ty improvement. Also, the use of technology such as telehealth, telenursing and videoconferencing are on the rise, and will be embedded into our communities and nursing organizations so that we can reach people around the country who do not have accessibility quality health care. Using technology to educate patients and families about credible websites, and how to search for pertinent information that is relevant to his or her health is a priority. The goal is to eliminate unnecessary emergency rooms visits. These actions foster communication and minimize anxiety
The American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics provides many professional traits that can be incorporated to an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals such as compassion and respect, advocacy, accountability for nursing practice and participation in advancement of the nursing career (Cherry, 2011). Compassion is a very important aspect of the nursing profession. It would be very difficult to be a nurse without being compassionate. Nurses demonstrate compassion and respect daily in their work by actively listening to patients’ and family members’ problems and concerns and by empathy when appropriate. Advocacy is a nursing trait constantly used by the entire interdisciplinary team. Nurses advocate for patients’ right of autonomy for decision making in regards to their care, treatments and procedures. Also, nurses are in the best position to serve as a bridge between the patient and the interdisciplinary team. Accountability is so essential in the nursing profession. Nurses are accountable for their own nursing practices and for our patients.
Observing and analyzing my leader opened my eyes to the amount of responsibility and knowledge one needs to be a great leader. These responsibilities that were witnessed during the shadowing project included aspects of role modeling, mentoring and educating fellow staff and colleagues alike. My leader possessed a well-rounded amount of experience, skills and knowledge about nursing and her management role. All of these aspects we observed and I feel my leader is not only strong nurse, manger and mentor; all these aspects contribute to making her a fine and valuable assets to our organization.
Responsible health teachings that are planned to help prevent illness, reduced morbidity, improve health and wellness practices and manage chronic conditions effectively with increasing patient care results. In this respect, Nurse Practitioner must stay consistent in maintaining a culturally sensitive patient-centered care environment by recognizing patients as part of the decision-making process (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2016). The development of evidence-based practice and evaluation practicing of learning become vital parts by providing a significant response to improving the teaching-learning process and, more likely, participate in the competent and excellent in the management of patient care (National League of Nursing, 2016). Health care is continuously developing and improving; Nurse Practitioner must be committed to lifelong learning to continue with the stated fast-paced revolutions. Additionally, NP collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote healthy partnership within the organization to providing optimal care and transition to the care continuum accordingly (National League of Nursing, 2016). Throughout my time on the Mother Baby Care Unit, I have faced many instances in which I have been able to reflect on both my patients and the care that I was providing them. One situation in particular that I found myself critically reflecting upon involved a new mother who was feeling slightly stressed about being discharged as her newborn son would not be going home with her. For confidentiality reasons, this patient will be given the pseudonym of Kayla for the remainder of this reflection.

Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
The objective of this reflection is to explore and reflect upon a situation from a clinical placement on an orthopedic unit. The incident showed that I did not provide safe, timely and competent care for my patient when the oxygen saturation was low. Furthermore, this reflection will include a description of the incident, and I will conclude with explaining what I have learned from the experience and how it will change my future actions.
Nurses demonstrate the core values of professionally caring for others in two different prospects. Huber (2014), notes that “nurses have two basic roles: care providers and care coordinators” (p. 3). The purpose of this paper is to identify and describe two health information and communication technologies (HICTs) and how they aid nurses in supporting safe, quality care, facilitating continuity of care and care coordination, and partnering with patients and families to increase participation in health care. HICT involves electronic creation, storage, exchange, and analysis of health information to advance delivery of health care. Widespread use of HICT within the healthcare industry can achieve the following goals: improve healthcare quality and safety, reduce costs and health disparities, enhance clinical research, and ensure security of patient health information (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015). Several examples of HICTs include: electronic medical record systems, electronic prescribing, consumer health applications, and telehealth (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality [AHRQ], 2015). Integration of HICTs in healthcare settings is valuable for all clinicians, but most importantly nurses as they are primary caregivers.
Leaders are an integral part of society, as they are the ones that are tasked with motivating, improving, observing, and ensuring that jobs are completed in an accurate and effective manner. The same can be said about leaders within the nursing industry. The following research paper will examine the differences between management and leadership within the nursing field, the importance of effective leadership throughout a healthcare organization, leadership theories that contribute to a positive work environment, a personal reflection on leadership type and specific behaviors that shall be developed in order to become a successful leader, including various resources available to assist in leadership development.
This semester, I hope to gain the confidence in my nursing skills necessary to help me work more independently with my patient care. Expanding on my assessment skills, communication skills, clinical judgment skills, and safety skills are important in gaining more independence in my care for my patients. I hope that this semester I can learn how to work with chest tubes, be more direct with what I need from my patient, be more confident with my knowledge in medications, improve my skills in delivering an SBAR, and learning the terminology used at Mayo Clinic and in nursing.
A professional nurse is one who puts the needs and importance of patient care above all others. While striving for professionalism, nurses need compassion, patience, empathy, strong moral and ethics, accountability and the commitment to always act in the best interest of their patients. Nurses are held accountable for providing quality, safe, and effective nursing care (Hood, 2014). A professional nurse has the responsibility to continually improve and implement nursing standards while maintaining integrity by involving themselves in various tasks. Regular involvement in reading professional literature and sharing of evidence- based research with other healthcare personal helps increase knowledge and skills. This nursing ability can be used to encourage the actions of others in the healthcare team resulting in improved patient care. Nurses should encourage each other to become involved in hospital committees, provide an environment to encourage the discussions of ethical dilemmas, promote professional growth of nurses to voice their concerns and share viewpoints to address issues. “A professional nurse should expect to commit to a life of continuous learning growth and development”. (Hood, 2014, pp. 29). Nurses choose this profession to help others. As professional nurses we must maintain our ethics, values, characteristics, and commitment to drive our profession forward (CCN, 2015). Nurses must be autonomous, accountable, and be able to delegate to unlicensed assistive personnel. Being autonomous as a nurse means having control over their practice (Hood, 2014). It allows a nurse to take risks while being held accountable for ones’ actions (Hood, 2014).
The future trends in health care are limitless. From using applications that perform EKG’s to robot-assisted surgery, the rapid expansion of technology applications in health care is astounding. Advancing technology also pushes the boundaries of health care in its ability to integrate health care information. The integration of health care information is critical to the effective, efficient delivery of quality care in a now fragmented health care system. This paper will assess how the internet or any new forms of electronic communication can be used as an external delivery source of communicating patient-specific information, address the impact of distance delivery on health care, how these communication issues impact health care today and
Learning goals I have set for myself during the course of this class are to gain an understanding and foundation of nursing theories, gain and understand the impacts of nursing practice as it relates the theories, and how to apply nursing theories to practices as appropriate and necessary. These goals were chosen because they will help set a foundation in nursing theories. Looking at the different topics to be discussed the two most interesting are (1) Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality and (2) Nightingale’s Environmental Model (George, 2011). The two topics that are the least interesting are (1) Child Health Assessment Interaction Model and (2) Maternal Role Attainment/Becoming a Mother (George, 2011).
