Interventions

There are many interventions that can assist an ME sufferer in improving their occupational imbalance and regaining a sense of identity. Pacing is the balance between activity and rest. An understanding of how to alter routines needs to be developed, using activities of different intensities at different times of the day and ensuring adaquent periods of rest (Pemberton & Berry, 2009; Pemberton & Cox, 2013). Pacing allows the individual to take control and positively plan how energy is used (Action for M.E, n.d) By working within the energy envelope activities can be gradually increased (Jason, 2008). Cognitive behavioural therapy has been shown in studies to improve symptoms of ME although long term outcomes are still inconclusive (Koop, Stulemeijer, Fiselier, Bleijenberg, de Jong, 2008; Price, Mitchell, Tidy & Hunot, 2008) …show more content…

Techniques such as relaxation, problem solving and scheduling and routines can help an ME suffer feel more in control of their situation (ANZMES, n.d.a; Pemberton & Berry, 2009). Diet is important to ensure the body is getting the fuel it needs. The provision of adaptive equipment and adaptive techniques will allow an ME sufferer improved access and ability to prepare meals of their own. Referrals to a nutritionist or a doctor may help identify food intolerances that are impacting on some symptoms. (ANZMES, n.d.b; Pemberton & Berry, 2009) Sleep is often over looked as an intervention for ME, but through the improvement of environment, medication, life style changes and self-help strategies, sleep can be improved to help provide symptom relief and increase an individuals energy envelope.
