My shadowing experience on October 15th was absolutely wonderful. I decided to shadow on the OB unit at Hays Medical Center. I became interested in OB after a shadowing experience I had this summer in Hutchinson. I originally started out with a Nurse Anesthetist that day and ended up in a Labor and Delivery room because the mother wanted an epidural. The Nurse Anesthetist allowed me to stay in the delivery room and watch the birth of the baby. This experience opened my eyes to a field of nursing I hadn’t ever considered before. Concrete As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a nurse who told me we were about to go into a c-section and that I needed to get gowned up. I was really surprised and really excited that I was going to get …show more content…
I feel very fortunate that I was able to witness something as interesting as a c-section while shadowing. It was really neat that I got to see every step of the process from the beginning of the surgery to post-surgery recovery. Witnessing this procedure showed me how many things nurses are truly responsible for with each and every patient. I learned so much from this experience. It is really neat that I have been able to witness both a vaginal and c-section birth and now know what each process is like for a nurse. Conceptualization This experience honestly confirmed my desire to become a nurse. I think it’s really cool that shadowing a Nurse Anesthetist ended up leading me into a completely different direction that I am now very interested in. I enjoy shadowing in OB because you get to work with both a mother and a baby and you get to understand and care for each one. As I was shadowing, I could truly visualize myself doing the things that the nurses were doing in the future. Being a nurse seems like an extremely rewarding career that can teach you something new everyday. Before shadowing, I knew I wanted to be a nurse, but I really didn’t know what department I wanted to work in. This experience definitely helped me narrow down the field I want to go into. I hope to have more shadowing experiences in the future in this
In my junior year of high school, I had the opportunity to shadow at an elementary school. I saw special education classes and kindergarten through fourth-grade classes as well. Finally, I observed an Occupational Therapist and an Occupational Therapist Assistant. As I was shadowing, the students would ask me to help them with their homework. It was an amazing experience because I was able to see what it would be like to help kids learn new material and develop skills. In my senior year of high school, I shadowed my pediatrician and a registered nurse twice. I got to see all different sides of the doctor’s office like doing strep tests, physical examination, and charting that the doctors have to do. From that experience of shadowing, it made my passion for the medical field even stronger. I enjoy the idea of knowing that each day is a different day and will offer a variety of experiences. Many people do not enjoy going to the doctor because they are scared or afraid of being judged or they even might not understand what the doctor is explaining. I would bring a nonjudgmental and compassionate side to the visit and connect with the person as a whole rather than their sickness. Patients than can also get to know me as a person, rather than a nurse helping them feel
I was introduced to the field of nursing by assisting my mother and her interdisciplinary team on a hospice case. It showed me how autonomous the job as a holistic hospice nurse is. The amount of dignity and care they provided for both the patients and their family during the final phase of their loved ones' life was unfathomable, being able to help maintain the respect for human life not only physically but spiritually as well was an enriching experience. It gave me an entirely new outlook on life and death. I fell in love with the amount of compassion and empathy I was able to pour into our patients. It has made me very proud of my title as a CNA.
The hands on experience I get in the classrooms is incredibly fun. I am enjoying learning skills that will be of value to me for the rest of my career. Whats’s more exciting is having the opportunity to put those skill to practice in the hospital with patients. So much knowledge is gained from interacting with the nurses and pateitns, something that can’t be learned in a classroom. Another aspect of the nursing program I enjoy is working with my fellow peers. The nursing program has a small group of people which allows us to become close. We struggle, cry and succeed together. It feels like I am part of a family we area learning together and learning from each other as
During my NICU rotation, I had a good chance to ask questions and just become familiar with the day-to-day process of a NICU nurse. The thing that impacted me the most with the day was how helpful my nurse was. She started the day off with an attitude that made me feel comfortable asking questions. Right away in the morning she began explaining why certain things are done and showing me instruments that I have never had any experience with. Although NICU was not all
It takes a lot to put up things to do this kind of job, such as, physical work, math, critical thinking, and it test your patience and understanding as a person. It takes a lot of emotions that you need to deal with every time you see the patients pain as well as, keeping and holding your own emotions in check. If I have more time, I would like to shadow again on a different kind of nurse. I want to explore the different types of profession of a registered nurse, for me to identify what kind of type of a nurse I am suited.
Within NASH we visit West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital, Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women and High Hope Care Center. When attending WCCH we were giving our areas to observe, my teacher assigned me to observe Labor and Delivery. Walking through those doors I just knew this is what I was destined to be, the atmosphere within the place is amazing. I was able to cut an umbilical cord, bathe a newborn, weigh a newborn, and my favorite check a baby's vitals. The feeling of helping bringing a newborn into the world, and connecting the mother on a personal level becoming their friend and physicians. Ever since then I have always asked my teacher to assign me to go to Labor and Delivery. Then, when it was time to go to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women I was enthusiastic to meet all the wonderful doctors and learn how they operate. It came down to the day we took a trip to the NICU and thats when my whole world changed. I saw how the babies looked so small and
I can also see myself starting my nursing career in Desert Regional Medical Center’s Women and Infants’ Center. During my Obstetrics rotation at Balboa Naval Medical Center, I assisted in vaginal deliveries by supporting patients through each stage of labor and witnessed emergency C-sections. I educated postpartum moms on breastfeeding, nutrition, vaginal care, and neonatal care. In the nursery, I had the pleasure of performing neonatal assessments and soothing neonates during circumcisions. Furthermore, during my Community Health rotation, I worked with pregnant teenagers and Spanish-speaking pregnant women to educate them on the normal physiological changes during pregnancy and on the expected physical changes after labor. I also monitored the growth and development of babies during home visits and performed depression and abuse screenings on new mothers. I truly enjoy the privilege of welcoming new lives into this world, nurturing the small and fragile to health, and supporting parents through a crucial phase in their
When I was younger I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field. I've gone through many different occupations that have interested me. After I shadowed I think I have found a job that I could really enjoy. Labor And Delivery Nurses are very hard working people, they work long hours and have to take care of not only the newborns, but the families too. I decided to choose this career because I love the idea of being able to take care of babies, and help the laboring moms. There’s just something about bringing a little life into the world that seems amazing.
Now with having this knowledge I am able to make future schooling decisions on what will serve me best in meeting the goal of becoming a NP. This also helped me in exploring other career opportunities that would be possible with being a nurse, as a nurse you have the option to have a career in which you may travel either globally, nationally, or locally, work more administratively, work very hands on, in a school setting, on varying floors, or serve in the service. With so much available to me in my one career path it is hard to not feel overwhelmed but understanding that I am able to diversify my career throughout my lifetime is reassuring because it will enable me to work my career into my lifestyle at the time. Along with exploring the multitude of paths within my career and ways to become an NP, I of course learned the many aspects that contribute to being a nurse, specifically a BSN of the Neurological floor at the Cleveland Clinic. With patients as expected one is to tend to their needs but to meet all of their needs it also necessitates working with those within your
During the first week of my undergraduate shadowing career I had an experience that dramatically shaped my ideology of what it meant to work in healthcare. I was shadowing a physician at Medina Community Hospice Care as well as the nurse practitioner that worked with him. Most mornings started with the medical team reviewing the patient charts and discussing the events that had happened during the night. It was an atmosphere where the passing of an individual was marked not as a tragedy, but a beautiful occurrence that was characterized by a wide range of emotions. These were truly
I do have prior experience with medical careers. For instance, for two years, I have been involved with a program called Explorers. Which, is a program for young adults to learn about EMS life. During Explorers, students learn basic lifesaving skills from active EMTs. Explorers are encouraged to sign up for shifts to learn more about the field. On shifts students check the ambulances to make sure that the equipment is accounted for and functioning. If there is a call, students observe EMTs and learn what to do in different patient situations. Although I do have some experience in the medical field, I do not believe I have enough well-rounded experience in nursing. I would like to experience more than one profession, which is why I have chosen to focus on nursing for my Capstone Internship. Shadowing the school nurse will allow me to observe the daily life of a nurse, and gain knowledge about her experiences.
Throughout my high school, I have taken the opportunity to get an experience on what is it like to become a nurse. I learned what nurses do and how they do their jobs. In 2014 to November 2016 I volunteer at Emanuel Medical Center for two hours every Friday . This experience has influenced my decision to pursue a nursing career by observing on the Registered Nurse does. When I was in my Junior year I took a class call Hospital and Health Services where we learn what the medical field is and what kind of jobs and career you can choose .
. Unfortunately, some aspects were hard to understand throughout my internship. This is including the hardships of death, the many numerous complications with birth, and much more. I am thankful for this internship because I now know the areas I can further my knowledge in. Internship gave me a clear basis on OB and areas I can execute
It is this job that developed my desire to work in the healthcare field. After researching the different options available, I focused on respiratory care. I independently set up a job shadow with a Respiratory Therapist in a hospital. This job shadowing experience only ensured me this is the career path for me. Therefore my job at the nursing home is beneficial because it provides an opportunity to learn valuable skills that will help me in my respiratory therapy career while earning money to fund my education.
I feel like this experience helped make me the nurse that I am today- one who is adaptable to less than ideal circumstances, able to deal with challenging family dynamics, and capable of working with a team to achieve great patient outcomes.
