Opioid Addiction

After several years of dealing with an opioid epidemic the governor of Florida has declared the state of Florida as state of emergency due to the opioid epidemic. According to Florida Department of Health (2016) opioids were the direct cause of death of 2,538 Floridians and contributed to an additional 1,358 deaths in 2015. Therefore, as healthcare providers in the state of Florida it is imperative that when we are prescribing opioids that we take into consideration of other pharmacological interventions before jumping directly into prescribing opioids.

As far as on the institutional level it’s the prescribe responsibility to implement measure to decrease the opioid epidemic. One way that can be doing is by using the E-FORCSE prescribing system to pick out the individuals that is abusing opioids. The E-FORCSE system was passes by the Florida Legislature Senate Bill 964 authorizing direct access to controlled substance dispensing information within the E-FORCSE database to a designee of a prescriber or dispenser (Florida Department of Health, 2016). As far as the regional, state and national level the use of E-FORCSE should be made mandatory for those who are prescribing opioids. I believe that the same idea can be used for international
