The bullet was released from the chamber before Heath even heard the sound of the man approaching. As he spun to face his assailant, the 9mm entered just below his abdomen and he fell to the ground with his vision wavering and closing into blackness. The last voice he heard was the man saying, “I told you this would happen. This is what you get when you betray those close to you.” Hours earlier... Heath walked into the room with his three-piece suit freshly ironed and his hair combed into a neat look. He was the boss, anyway. What good was served if you looked bad in front of your employees? Heath had built his company from the ground up, starting with an old computer he had built and his parents’ garage as the workspace. “Hey, boss, where you want these papers? Spent all day on ‘em and I sure hope they aren’t going to waste.” There Trent was, waving his newly typed report in front of Heath’s face. Trent was the vice-president of the company, and the only person Heath would allow to do such a thing, but right now Heath didn’t even care. His stomach ached, and he remembered back two months when he had been shot by Shawn. According to the police reports, Shawn had wanted it to look and sound like Trent had shot Heath because of their falling out over the job. Apparently, Shawn had thought that when Heath was dead and Trent in jail, he could then take over as head of the company. Now he was sitting in jail for the next four years, thinking about what he had done. Heath had to thank him, though. Because of Shawn, Trent gave up his old grudge and he and Heath had made up and become good friends again. Trent was now the vice-president in place of Shawn, and things were going better than they ever had been. Trent was taking counseling for his anger, and was definitely one of the better employees
