Nt1310 Unit 2 Design Exercise

Decent Essays

The second design exercise involved me exploring more into the possibilities of using the laser cutting technology for 3D scanning with different drawing software. In this exercise, I made a small replica of my hand doing a classical Indian dance gesture, ‘Hamsasya’. This was done by scanning my hand using a ‘structure sensor’ device in which was attached to an ipad and examined around my hand. The drawing software used to designate slices into the scanned hand was 'Meshmixer' and 'Autodesk 123D Make'. The materials I used to make the replica were cardboard. I transferred the scan onto Meshmixer first, to open up the file and was then exported to 123D Makes to proceed with selecting the angle and positions of the slice to cut out. Each shape was cut out individually to slices and numbered in the software so that when it is assembled …show more content…

It was easy to assemble because the cut-out was engraved in the number of its orders and because it was made out of cardboard, the construction required simple method of sticking it together with glue. However, the problems I had were the exporting the file and saving it into different file. I save the file to be printed by exporting mesh as an ‘STL’ when I should of save it by going on ‘simple’ layout arrangement and then exporting file type as ‘DXF’. I solved this problem afterward, doing this step, so that I could print the final design properly. There was consideration that I had to bear in mind such as printing on the exact measurements of the material I used to cut my model out of so I solved this by customizing a new manufacturing setting to 60cm in length, 90cm in width and 0.3 cm in thickness. This is so that the design drawn is cut exactly to the same position as the on ‘cut layout’ plan. I also had problems with figuring out my time management to complete manufacture of the initial design in which I need to work on next
