Northern Inyo Hospital added a new Pediatrician to its children’s health team this week. Dr. Louisa Salisbury arrived for orientation on Monday and will spend the next two weeks learning NIH policies and procedures. She begins seeing patients the week of August 17. A native Californian, Salisbury comes to NIH by way of New England. She is a graduate of the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine and completed her Pediatrics training at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in working with children, even when I was very young,” she said. Naturally, when she began studying medicine, it was Pediatrics that drew her in. “Children are just the best – they want to get better, they want to get back …show more content…
“We have the opportunity to take care of these children before a lot of the life’s problems come along. We need to always be thinking about how we can keep them their healthiest, keep them their happiest and prevent serious health issues from occurring later on.” She also firmly believes “it takes a village” to help children become healthy, happy individuals that will grow up to reach their full potential. “I get the sense everyone here is invested in the community and that’s a real positive atmosphere for children to grow up in,” she said. Is there any advice she has for parents that can help improve their child’s overall health and development? “Have children involved in an activity where they can feel a sense of accomplishment,” she said. “Having something outside of school, an extracurricular, it doesn’t have to be a sport, it could be arts or dance, but some sort of activity where they are meeting peers, learning a skill and developing a sense of identity that’s outside of school, especially before they get into the pre-teen years where there are a lot of social stressors. I just think one of the biggest resiliency factors is having children in an activity. It teaches them confidence, structure, discipline and they’re meeting friends. It gives them a good foundation for their
In mid-April 2000, Sherri Worth was faced with some very unsettling news about Pate Memorial Clinic’s future with a competitor potentially moving into the area. Worth was the assistant administrator at Pate Memorial Hospital (PMH) and was also responsible for the Pate Health Clinic (PHC). A study by the competitor was being done to see whether sufficient demand existed to establish a clinic 5 blocks north of PHC. The two biggest concerns in regards to the new competition were:
Additionally, supporting children’s holistic health and well-being will not only enhance their growth and development, but also increase their self-esteem and promotes motivation for example, ‘willingness’ to explore with peers, which will contribute to positive enforcement as they grow and develop. They will also feel value by others and will feel confident to take risks and challenges and to be able to problem solve effectively without fear or judgement .
Welcome to the USA. Welcome to California. Welcome to Carlsbad and North San Diego County. We are happy and excited that you are with us in our own home. We are very happy that you have joined us to share and learn about palliative care in our setting.
Claudia Gastelum is the Project Director for Healthy Development Services (HDS) in San Diego County. HDS is a department of the Family Health Centers of San Deigo (FHCSD). People once believed that babies were born with completely developed brains (nature), but enough research has proven this to be wrong, when in fact a child’s environment effects his/her developmental (nurture) (ecs.org). HDS is funded by First 5 San Diego, so it works under the same mission and goals in a close partnership. First 5’s mission is in, “promoting the vital importance of the first five years of life to the well-being of children, families and society,” and their goal is, “that all children ages 0 to 5 are healthy, are loved and nurtured, and enter school as active learners,” (first5sandiego,org). HDS provides free developmental check-ups for children from birth through 5 years of age, and connects children and familist to needed services. This organization ensures parents and other caregivers receive the help they need to keep their children healthy, because healthy children learn better (ecs.org).
It's clear that when you have a goal, there are no excuses. One mom has proved that she can make a difference. Moms can do multitasking such as household chores, breastfeeding, regular exercise and a lot more. However, a young mother from Utah proved that she can do something that nobody else does. If there's a will, there's a way.
Going through my education, I have acquired various skills to assist me on the road to becoming a physician. Devoting hundreds of hours to volunteering and shadowing in a hospital setting has given me a basic understanding of the care and patience required by physicians. In particular, shadowing a pediatrician helped me develop the ability of observation and acute attention to detail. I was given the opportunity to participate and interact with the patients and attempt to form my own diagnosis based on the given symptoms. Having the opportunity to input my own opinion and discussing the patient’s medical history with the physician assisted me in cultivating necessary characteristics such as versatility and keen intuition
I always knew I want to work with pediatric population. During my clinical rotations, I always requested to work with pediatric patients if available. Unfortunately, my nursing instructor who understood this passion and extracurricular activities passed away shortly before graduation. However, that adds to motivation to help continue to help children and their communities. In the first month of clinical rotation at Seattle Children’s, there was a patient’s family who was getting frustrated. After
Ms. Brooks started off helping special needs children and then went on to work at a Daycare. Seeing each child face every day motivates her to continue on even when she don’t want to. Ms. Brooks plays a major part in her community. During back-to school week she provides kids with school supplies for the
Most pediatricians start in the morning around 9:00 A.M. However, they have to come in a little earlier to get ready for the day (Holycross). A current pediatrician, Julie Holycross, stated that she prints out lists and growth charts, downloads labs, and also does assessments to make sure her patients meet their milestone.
I have had a passion for becoming a healthcare provider for children for quite a while (for a long time). Children are one of the most important individuals of society because they are the future and will one day be in charge of the world. Their health at a young age is indicative to how their health will be as adults. Childhood has a great effect on how a person turns out to be so I hope to help children I hope to use prevention and education to preserve and restore the health of my patients. My career goals are to prevent children from having to spend time in hospitals or in pain and to help them live out their life and dreams to the fullest extent. Children play a very large role in their families, and when a child becomes sick, the whole family becomes distressed. Pediatricians not only heal children, but they help and prevent a family from suffering. I love medicine and children, and I hope to combine these two passions by becoming a pediatrician.
The Foundations of Lifelong Health is a brief published by Harvard University’s Center on the developing child. In essence, the brief focuses on the concept of healthy child development as the framework for a healthy future (Shonkoff, Duncan, Yoshikawa, Fisher, Guyer & Magnuson, 2010). The idea behind this thought is that if people are kept healthy in their early years, then they can continue to progress as healthy adults (Shonkoff et al., 2010). To ensure this positive continuum, the bio-developmental framework focuses on the development of policies and programs that enable caregivers and the community to reinforce the foundations of health (stability, safety, and nutrition), and trigger a positive response (see figure 1.). The bio developmental framework focuses on these four aspects: policy and program lever
I personally agree with the main findings of this article for several reasons I hadn’t thought about before. Young children can be problematic at times, but they can always be helped with the right
As a pediatrician it is special to see the maturation of my patients. As a young girl, Ariel believed she could be a physician or have a career in health
Deciding to pursue a career in Family Medicine was not a choice that I made easily. Before entering medical school, I assumed Pediatrics was the field for me. Taking on a leadership role as a volunteer peer tutor for students with disabilities in high school had stimulated my interest in working with adolescents. However, after completing rotations in various specialties, I recognized that I enjoyed caring for patients of all ages and wanted to be in a profession where I can treat not only the disease but the person as a whole.
I have had a variety of experiences that contributed to my overall motivation to become a health care professional. My passion for medicine began when I was an adolescent being evaluated and taken care of by my pediatrician, Dr. Gonzalez. As a kid, I loved being active and playing several sports. However, I consistently had shortness of breath, wheezing, and tightness in my chest during my sports competitions, which my parents quickly noticed. I visited Dr. Gonzalez who knew from the symptoms and experience that I have asthma and prescribed both an inhaler and nebulizer for me to prevent further complications which allow me an opportunity to continue playing sports. I began succeeding playing all sports, and was extremely grateful for her medical knowledge, support, and advice. I was ecstatic knowing that she was going to ensure I stayed healthy and also become successful in various ways. . In middle school, I began looking into the health care careers to explore my options. Now that I am older, I envision myself in Dr. Gonzalez’s position one day. I know I have all the right qualities to be an amazing, caring children doctor.
