In 2015, commercial fisheries harvested in North Carolina caught more than four times the recreational coastal fish harvest, yet commercial fishermen ask for less stringency on commercial fishing (“Portal”). Within North Carolina waters the most effective way of catching fish can be noticed without looking very far. Over the past few decades, many more commercial fishermen have been popping up creating a lack of abundance in some channels and creeks that once were pristine. The methods used by many commercial fishermen can harm them by catch and nontarget species of the estuaries and nurseries. With the harming of these species we also begin to harm the keystone species of most coastal regions. There may have been an abundance of fish at one …show more content…
Commercial fishermen have been employing more effective methods than ever and the only problem with that is it may be a little too effective. The methods they use are legal though in North Carolina however, in other states some of these methods that are legal in North Carolina waters yet are illegal or restricted in other waters. The giant trawlers employed in North Carolina can be illegal for example in Georgia the maximum size shrimp trawl net size is 10 feet but in North Carolina the maximum trawl net size is 26 feet headrope size (“eregulations”). That is 2 ½ the size of the Georgia shrimp trawl net maximum by allowing this North Carolina shrimp trawl nets have 2 ½ times the net to use, that’s a huge difference. When a North Carolina trawler is inspected they must have an escape for some endangered species that can be tangled into the nets. The ingenuity of this product is installed at the end of a trawling net and when a sea turtle press it, the contraption allows a flap to open up allowing the sea turtle to swim free. But in actuality this does not end all suffering or sea turtle killing this just helps save some turtles' lives. Although there are precautions taken to protect some aquatic life there should be more taken to protect the whole …show more content…
When gill nets are used there is no escape for manatees or sea turtles until someone comes to cut them out of the floating walls of the mesh entrap them until they are taken by death or released. But when North Carolinians see a manatee which may be rare to see why would they wish to see one entangled in a net. These poor animals are already endangered why does it have to be made worse by commercial fishermen. Manatees are aquatic mammals kind of like whales they are the gentle giants of the Intracoastal waterway. Manatees are like the whales of inshore but unlike whales manatees are more inept to being harmed by humans and the fishing. Sea turtles use both inshore and offshore waters so they are always in danger from the fisheries from being run over by a boat or being entrapped in a net. Sea turtles are endangered already but when they come into inshore waters they endanger their lives unknowingly they risk death. But thankfully they resist coming into these waters unless they must lay eggs. In order to protect sea turtles many people must take a stand for these beautiful
Moreton Bay and Tangalooma is the third largest local government in Australia by population. It covers more then 2000 square kilometres and serving nearly 400,000 residents. The council has more then $4.4 billion worth of assets under management. On March 11th 2009, a container ship in the Pacific Ocean lost over 31 containers overboard, it had leaked approximately 270 tonnes of oil 11km off east of Moreton Bay. Their wasn’t many wildlife that was effect from this oil leak. The animals that were effected was treated, cleaned and then released. In Moreton Bay and Tangalooma over 200 turtles are being reported dead, sick or injured. The debris and plastics in the ocean doesn’t just effect the marine life but it also effects human health. Turtles can be very weak due to their downward facing spines, which causes them to swallow their food easy but cannot bring it back up, which paralyses the turtles gut from digesting their food. Most of the pollution that enter the waterways of Tangalooma and Moreton Bay are being flushed into the Bay’s, which is actually impacting the water quality and health of Moreton Bay and Tangalooma. By more and more pollution entering the water ways of the bay’s it can increase the cause the turbidity, nutrients and algal blooms, which can cause the loss of seagrass and a loss of food sources for the turtles and other marine

Loggerhead sea turtles are one of the most abundant species of the marine life in the U.S. oceans but the population is currently decreasing due to pollution increase and getting caught in bycatch. The term bycatch is when shrimp fishermen have their nets out and the animal ( in this case a loggerhead sea turtle) gets caught in the net and eventually killing the sea turtle . ((( Add More))))
If only a few ships and fisherman here and there adopt turtle exclusion devices, their effect will not be seen. A measure that needs to be taken is one that will do a multitude of things. One, the conservation measure is one that all ships can adopt. This is the only way that exclusion devices can be effective. Two, there needs to be some sort of visible and/or tangible reward for compliance like a stipend or a subsidy. In addition, the final reason is to implement a conversation technique that will benefit both marine animals like the sea turtles and humans (Mullon). We live in a selfish world where people, before agreeing to something, want to see how it benefits them. Anglers are not going to adopt a new gear modification or exclusion device if it hurts their business. They will refuse implement them even if it is the
Catch records for the Limulus commercial fishery in the Delaware Bay declined from 4 million horseshoe crabs per year to less than 100,000 between the 1870s and the 1960s (Shuster and Botton, 1985). It wasn’t until the second half of the 20th century that a commercial fishery on horseshoe crabs developed to provide bait for use in catching eel (Anguilla rostrada) and whelk (Busycon spp.) (Ferrari and Targett, 2003). The horseshoe crab commercial fishery has increased dramatically beginning in 1990 (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). A variety of methods are employed by fishermen to capture horseshoe crabs: trawls, dredges, hands, and gillnets (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). Entire beaches covered in horseshoe crabs can easily be harvested by hand since these animals have essentially no defense mechanism (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). Overall, one million Limulus were landed on the Atlantic coastline between 1989 and 1992. This number grew to over two million by
Manatees have been protected by the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act since 1978 (Spivey). This act prohibits annoying, molesting, harassing, or disturbing any manatee to be found in or near the state. It also specifies that anyone who tries to kill, hunt, pursue, or capture a manatee would have serious repercussions. Even with all these laws there is still a growing number of manatee deaths throughout the state. When manatees were put on the endangered species list in 1973 they were also put under the protection of the endangered species organization. This organization has enforced four laws so far to protect manatees from future harm (Swart). This entitles the manatee population to a number of new laws and requirements put on the state of Florida to protect them . For manatees this included new speed zones for boats and different water pollution regulations put into place at all bays where manatees are known to be. These things caused the number of injured manatees to go down for a few years but since then the numbers have slowly climbed back up to where they were before. The rules and regulations put in place by both the state of Florida and the endangered species organization did the trick for a while but the follow through on most of them was gone away causing them to no longer be of any help to the manatee
Recently I went on a trip to Jekyll Island and while there, my family and I went to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Before this, I did not know much about them, other than the fact that the one in my backyard drive my dogs crazy. While at the Turtle Center, we visited a feeding of some of the turtles that the Turtle Center’s hospital was nursing back to health. This experience
Sea turtles have always had difficulties getting to the water without harm because they are preyed upon by sea birds, sharks and/or raccoons. With the increase of population and tourism the amount of trash on the beaches has increased. Turtles will commonly mistake trash for food. With this common confusion the population of sea turtles is slowing decreasing causing them to gradually become extinct. In order to help save the sea turtles locals and tourists need to keep the beaches clean by picking up after themselves and
To begin with, the author argues that the shrimpers claim that TED is not effective due to the fact that turtles are absolutely rare in sea and subsequently boats do not observe more than one in the mount and this method is not cost effective. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there are a lot of shrimps in sea in conjunction with turtle and no one can cast doubt on fact that nets reduce the
The World Wildlife Organization states that, “Hawksbills help maintain the health of coral reefs. As they remove prey such as sponges from the reef's surface, they provide better access for reef fish to feed.” These turtles help take care of the reefs the fish we eat live in, without them fish would probably not have access to nearly as much food and would be eaten by prey on the surface of the reef. Sea life getting stuck in fishing nets has been a problem in the past, so minimizing that too would be ideal.
Status: The hawksbill sea turtle is critically endangered from people around the world taking the “tortoise
Leatherbacks are the species that most people are thinking of when they think of sea turtles. They are the biggest and most migratory of all sea turtles, but they are becoming extremely endangered due to poaching, pollutants, and other killers even though we have tried many things to stop it. We have done many things to protect sea turtles, but some people don’t follow the rules and come closer every day to extinguishing the leatherbacks. People have to stop killing leatherbacks for sport unless they want a whole marine ecosystem to be put off scale.
In Canada, the Grand Banks habitat is in “environmental degradation” (Connor and Taitano) due to bottom trawlers tearing up the sea floor displacing and destroying the vegetation at the seafloor and therefore disrupting the habitat of the small fish the cod prey upon (Connor and Taitano). Bottom trawls also disrupt the “breeding patterns of the cod.. Damaging fertilized eggs.. And greatly reducing the amount of young born” (Connor and Taitano). In the United States, the Gulf of Maine provides evidence of a loss of the young and old cod due to predation (Connor). Farming atlantic cod, like many fisheries are doing to replenish the atlantic salmon populations, have resulted in a breakout of the disease Yersiniosis (Connor and Taitano). The disease affects the fish’s intestinal tract before spreading throughout its body. The mortality rate with this disease is low, about 5%, however the illness prevents the affected cod from being sold at a market due to health violations (Connor and
Now, as most may know sea turtles are both marine and land animals depending on what stage of life they are in. Which means that they need to be able to go on land during certain stages of their lives. One of the main reasons why a sea turtle will go on to land is to lay their eggs. Within the last few years this has become harder and harder for the already endangered species. It
How often do we stop and think about the people that fish to provide the rest of the world with the supply of fish that is in demand. With many fisheries closing down due to poor managing and depletion, anglers are turning to the deep sea to fill their “fish orders”. Large fishing vessels also known as Super Trawlers are dragging fishing nets up to a mile deep. Doing this allows them to catch as many fish as possible, but it is also destroying natural habitat such as coral reefs that have been part of the sea for thousands of years. The effect of this is devastating to sea life.
