Question 1 Nordstrom has famously been known for its lean retail prices and its tight inventory. Nordstrom uses demand forecasting to minimize leftover inventory. Nordstrom’s total corporate management is based on two main goals. One is to associate purchasing with demand to keep inventory as lean as possible. Second is to present customers and sales associates with a wide-ranging view of Nordstrom’s entire inventory, including all stores and warehouses. Effective communication can increase the common understanding of ethics and ideas among customers and form a base for relations and future purchases. The happier a customer feels with the company that they are purchasing from, the more often they will go back to that company and purchase more products. Groups that should be involved are all employees within the company, because the more they are involved, the more comfort there will be among the employees and the customers who will buy the product in the near future.
Question 4 Nordstrom has done a lot to their technology department since 2009 to compete with competitors in the online market. If there were ideas that I could suggest for them, I would say that in their search area on the sites, they can still add more functions, such as a rating system where customers can rank the product on how good it is. Companies such as Macy’s and Nike have a customer rating system for clothing, so buyers know which products are being liked and which ones aren’t. Also, in the online inventory, Nordstrom needs to include which products are new, and which ones are old because it is not listed on their site. Companies such as Nike, Banana Republic and Macy’s all have a “new arrival” tab on their website while Nordstrom does not. Inventory levels over the past 4 years have remained on an increasingly consistent track as their revenue has risen. According to Best Buy (2010), this rise in revenue and assets is partly due to the fact that they enter new markets and open new stores across the world. The latest opportunities that they have come across include new stores in Europe and other areas overseas. This is new territory for Best Buy but has been a successful venture based on their flexibility with their inventory systems that they have in place. The company’s profits were growing and there was increases in market share. Nordstrom marketing plan was effective but there was still room to grow. The company needed to change its marketing strategy and further its market penetration to remain successful.
Within the retail environment, scheduling and a rapid response to changing consumer sentiments are critical. As such, the organizations systems must reflect this change in consumer dynamics to maximize sales and profitability. A systems approach works well in accomplishing this task. In many instances, consumer demand, consumer sentiments and macroeconomic factors all influence one another. In the context of Macys, macroeconomic factors determine consumer demand and confidence. Attempting to forecast this demand, the organization must then adjust scheduling and inventory levels accordingly. The input elements in this system would therefore be aligned with macroeconomic considerations. Aspects such as income growth, discretionary income, consumer confidence, tax policy, and commodity prices all affect the system. For instance high gas prices, can potentially cause less discretionary income for individuals. This lack of discretionary income ultimately hinders the amount of spending on discretionary items. This lack of spending impacts Macys on the output side as the company must now lower inventory levels or markdown merchandise to compensate consumers. As someone who has never had the privilege of living near a Nordstrom’s I’ve always seen going to the store as a treat. Because of where I’ve lived I had never seen an advertisement. What I do find interesting however is their influence over Google and other search engines. I online shop more than I care to admit and anytime I google an article of clothing described a business, or semi-formal their brand pops up in the top 5.
Customer service can be taught anyone to a certain point. That being, interacting with the customer for their immediate benefit or encompassing positive language in their conversation with the customer. However, there are some who just don’t have the ability to interact with customers. Whether it be a personality trait, inability to interact with people, or they just don’t want too. The best way to start teaching good customer service skills is with management. Management must first develop a positive work environment in where they treat their employees. An environment where employees are treated badly fosters an avenue for them to treat customers the same way. As I stated, nearly everyone can learn basic skills along with exceptional customer service skills as well with extended training. But there is a certain percentage of people who have the knack for truly exceptional customer service skills, usually inherited with one’s personality. Things that can’t be taught commitment and enthusiasm, you have to like who you work for and what you do. This can be faked, how you find out? The employee finds a slightly better paying job usually with no relationship that the employee was previously doing.
Nordstrom, created in 1901 by John W. Nordstrom as a small shoe store in Seattle, Washington, is a major department store located in the United States and Canada. At Nordstrom you can find apparel, home goods, shoes, and accessories for your daily lives. Nordstrom has over 300 stores located in 40 states and has become one of the top department stores through their innovative tactics, great customer service, welcoming store environment, and their wide range of brands and products.
Nordstrom’s employees and management are the company’s most valuable resource. An article written in the Seattle PI describes exactly why this is true. It states that, “Nordstrom salespeople make decisions as if managing their own business; they are trusted to do what is right. Everyone else in the company is there to help the sales staff make the sale and please the customer” (Mulady, 2009). The way the employees are treated and valued is a perfect portrayal of the company’s mission of providing the best possible customer service and value to the customer.
Retail super-giant Wal-Mart has fought its way to becoming the world's largest company. Wal-Mart’s legendary supply chain technology has allowed them to break the three-day barrier that some economists in the eighties felt that it was unbreakable. In other words, Wal-Mart is often able to replenish items on the Wal-Mart shelf in less than three days – not from the central warehouse to the shelf, but from the manufacturer to the shelf. With quick and reliable 2-day turn around, Wal-Mart is able to maintain lower levels of inventory and still meet customer demand. These lower inventory levels result in either a reduced floor plan with lower carrying costs and lower interest expense – or a greater diversity of products on the store shelves.
Expansion was not the only change Nordstrom implemented to differentiate the company from competitors. By broadening their inventory selection and making it more accessible to their customer base, Nordstrom began setting the bar for all retailers in the industry. With the additions of departments such as juniors and sportswear they began to expand and increase their target market to a younger customer. In the 80’s, Nordstrom modernization continued by adding women and men’s vendors such as Calson, DKNY, Kenneth Cole, and Tommy Bahamma. In May 2000, Nordstrom declared “Reinvent Yourself”
The Spanish retail chain Zara has unique supply chain management practices that enable it to gain a competitive advantage over other fashion retailers in the industry. Zara’s rapid response time enables the firm to quickly respond to changing fashions while deliberately under producing products. This strategy, which is supported by competencies in logistic management, design and information systems, allows the company to maintain less inventory and higher profit margins and is a key factor to Zara’s success. The firm should continue to add value by seeking new opportunities to expand in the retail market and maintain their sustainable growth.
This set of data belongs to the online retailer industry. The most significant categories that helped with our decision was the low inventory for a retail business and the relatively high inventory turnover. Macy’s has always found creative ways to attract consumers in the past such as the botanical garden. They should consider hosting more events to build up their brand and draw more positive attention to themselves. I thought it was a great idea for Macy’s to partner up with other retail companies to expand their inventory. Instead of take the initiative to horizontally integrate, they have decided to allow other retailers to setup in their department stores. This would bring in customers that are in a rush to pick up multiple things for holiday shopping to go to Macy’s as it would be a one stop shop. Best Buy is a good example of one of the many partnerships. They already have a fan based and loyal customers, so it would not make senses if they decided to start an electronic department to compete with the current market. It would also resolve the issue of low traffic in Macy’s as it would attract more shoppers to go to Macy’s to visit the section of different
