Non-verbal communication consists mainly of the things people do with their body language. There are times where words are expressed and non-verbal communication could help emphasize the message. A few examples of nonverbal communication are hand gestures eye contact, facial expressions as well as tone and volume. I was given this assignment to observe a situation and take note of the nonverbal communication that occurred. I also had to observe whether the non-verbals were able to execute the message and if the behavior was acceptable.
I went to Sprouts, a grocery store, Saturday, August 28th at approximately 6:40 p.m. As I walked into the grocery store I noticed that it was not very crowded, but the vibe seemed to be very uptight and sort of stressful. The customers looked tired and they just wanted to get a few items and leave the store as quickly as possible. Other times, the pace is a lot slower and the people are more willing to socialize. I walked through the isles a few times, until I saw a father and son. My first assumption based on the dad’s outer appearance was that he is strict and protective. The dad had a serious face and his son was inside the shopping cart. The dad must be around thirty- five years old. The son spoke clearly, so I assume he is about four years old. The dad had his back to the shopping cart because he was scooping chocolate covered fruit into a plastic zip lock bag from the bulk food area. I look at the child and he is standing up at the
As a group we decided to do our behavior symptom analysis on Jennifer Pan. At the age of 24, Jennifer Pan was charged with hiring hitman to murder her parents. During her conviction there were three separate interrogations that police conducted, but we decided to focus on the initial interrogation by police because it showed a large amount of deceptive and non-deceptive cues. Throughout the video our group saw deception through channels of nonverbal communication, verbal and paralinguistics. Each group member focused on the different channels of communication and presented their findings in this paper. Starting with nonverbal and ending with paralinguistic there are many deceptive and non-deceptive cues that helped investigators learned the true intentions and motive behind Jennifer Pan.
Dinica’s article in Procedia, Social and Behavioral Sciences from 2014 researched how nonverbal behavior aids communication by observing how animals communicate, since humans are the only species to use language as their main form of communication. While there were some similarities between animal’s and human’s nonverbal behaviors, they discovered that thanks to language, humans have adapted to using their words to communicate information more and pick up on less nonverbal cues. Animal communication was limited based on their body features and the range of ways they could use their bodies to communicate different things.
Business communication is a skill not everyone has; it is however something that can be learned. Many people think of only verbal skills when working on their business communication; however some forget how nonverbal cues can affect a message. Nonverbal communication can make or break a business conversation. If a potential partner interprets nonverbal communication conveying a different message than the verbal does it can lead to complications when trying to close an opportunity. As the world has become more connected, the importance of knowing different culture’s interpretations of nonverbal cues has become more important than ever. Since 1950, the world trade has grown more than twenty-seven fold in volume terms (Expansion of International Trade section, para. 1). Technological advances have provided easier access to new markets and manpower which has changed the face of business as we know it. It is more important than ever to be aware of how nonverbal communication is received by others because nonverbal in order to be successful in business; nonverbal communication is just as important as verbal communication.
Nonverbal communication is behaviors and characteristics that convey meaning with out the use of words. Sometimes accompanying verbal messages, to clarify or reinforce them. (Floyd, Communicating Nonverbally, 2013) It is said to be true that nonverbal communication sometimes gives more information that verbal communication. People’s facial expressions, gestures, and personal appearance are all forms of nonverbal communication and it relies on our sense of vision. For instance, when my sorority and I get together for a meeting and the president of our chapter stands up in front of everyone to share information, it is important that we let her know that we are interested by nodding our head in agreement, smiling at her, clapping our hands, and keeping eye contact with her so she knows our focus is on her. For our chapter it is important to reassure our president that we are listening and focused on what she has to say by using nonverbal behaviors. From texting, emails, talking on the phone, or even talking in person. If you are communicating in a nonverbal way it is important to get your point across exactly how you mean it because someone can read it differently. Talking in person can be easier because you can hear their tone of voice and see their facial expressions, so that can help you determine how they are trying to get the message across. In our speech 191 class we have done many activities learning about verbal and nonverbal communication.
My first personal experience with nonverbal communication occurred while shaking hands with a stranger in the coffee shop. I was waiting for my friend in the coffee shop once an evening. During that interval, one stranger came nearby to my table and raised his hand toward me. His intention was to shake hands with me. But surprisingly, he was unknown to me and I had no personal information about him. He seemed quite strange to me as it was really our first face-to-face meeting with him.

Nonverbal communication has the ability to deliver information more effectively than verbal communication. Interpersonal communication is more effective when a conversation is complimented with non-verbal communication (Bello, et al, 2010). Nonverbal communication is not limited to any environment or surroundings because we are always communicating through nonverbal cues consciously and subconsciously. Whether a person is at a business meeting, bar, park, or his/her house, the transmission of verbal and nonverbal communication is continually being sent and received.
A single gesture can mean any number of things, or maybe even nothing at all. The key to accurately reading nonverbal behavior is to look for groups of signals that reinforce a common point. If you place too much emphasis on just one signal out of many, you might come to an inaccurate conclusion about what a person is trying to communicate.
Communication is a natural thing that we as human beings do every day whether we speak or not. There is two different types’ verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication is when we communicate using words exchange in the form of speech in writing or oral. Nonverbal communication does not use words for exchange a message. We use body language, facial expressions, sign language, and eye contact among a few things (Adler, Elmhorst, & Lucas, 2013).

The instance when two people look at each other’s eyes at the same time is a communication event that I find particularly mysterious. My fascination lies in that different messages can be communicated through the eyes alone. Whether we are talking about direct or indirect gaze, duration, direction or expression, the moment of eye contact between two people can serve to make a great connection or a disastrous one. This is of particular importance to me personally because I have tend to have an empathetic interest in people I meet and find that this form of non-verbal communication can add an additional facet to understanding them. Beyond being mysterious, I also feel that the more that is known about this form of nonverbal communication, the more effective you can be in life. This is also an area that I would like to better understand due to the fact that my personal strengths lie in the area of non-verbal communication, and I think it would be helpful in my professional life. However, in order to attempt to understand how people communicate through eye contact, it is imperative to have a good understanding of the communication theory that goes along with this non-verbal communication event.
Being able to communicate effectively as a transferable skill that many do not appreciate today. Instead it is assumed that communication is being able to speak or write efficiently as well as effectively. This is not true. The word communication gets thrown around on a regular basis to deliver the illusion that it is only sent communication. The fact is communication is not only sending the message, but also receiving the message. Personally, I feel that nonverbal communication is my strongest transferable skills that I didn’t really realize about myself. I believe that my being able to read nonverbal actions and decipher nonverbal communication is the reason I am able to empathize so well with others and be able to understand them
