California might be the first state to create a broad nonbinary option in state identification. SB 179 was introduced by democratic senators Toni Atkins of San Diego and Scott Weiner of San Francisco. It passed through the senate and is now set to be considered in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. In addition to giving a nonbinary option in all forms of state identification, the bill would make it easier for transmen and transwomen to change the gender they were designated at birth, this includes minors who have consent from their parents. Donald Trump is closing the circle of liberty for people, including people in our military that happen to be transgender by denying them the ability to serve our country as well
As of 2017 the Gender Recognition Act would add “non-binary” to male and female gender boxes on official state documents making it easier for transgender people to change the gender in which they identify with. As of now, the federal government does not offer a third gender option for official documents such as passports. The issue drew national attention when a federal judge asked the U.S. State Department to reconsider its decision to deny a passport to a Colorado resident who does not identify as male or female. “The erosion of these
Transgendered persons can potentially lose their position in the military. Although other political leaders disagree with president’s trumps proposal. I disagree with the proposed actions that transgenders should be banned from the military, based on material and nonmaterial components. The terms Heterosexism, cultural relativism, feminist and standpoint theory will be used to support my decision.
Every day, there are American citizens who risk their lives for the sake of their country's safety. Men and women who believe that justice, peace, and equality should be served. However, within their beliefs, some choose to exclude transgender individuals who have the same rights and freedoms. The American society considers the world to be progressively changing and growing, however, seem to forget that in order for the military to survive the 21st century, diversity is crucial. Although the medical costs may raise the overall healthcare median per year, transgender individuals should have the right to serve in the U.S. armed forces because any human being who meets the physical qualifications and has a willing attitude should have the right to serve.
On September 18th, 2017, the state of California enrolled the female, male and nonbinary gender recognition identity bill. This sparks the Gender Recognition Act, allowing members of the California state who have undergone clinically appropriate treatment for the purpose of gender transition, rights to their appropriate gender. The trans community members of the california state are now legally allowed to change to the accurate gender role on their driver's licenses and birth certificate thus allowing more freedom and independence by obtaining state issued identity documents that accurately reflect their gender. We use are gender identity everyday of our lives, when we apply for a job, use our credit cards, for someone who will use their I.D
In 2016, former president, Barack Obama lifted the ban of transgenders being in the military. Now the question comes up, should transgender be allowed in the military? This is a very “touchy” topic as when discussed in verbal debates, situations can become pretty heated. Recently, current president, Donald Trump reversed the decision and put the ban back on as he made the announcement on Twitter saying, the military does not need to be “burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgenders in the military would entail.” (Caceres). Several members of the military have voiced their opinions on why they think transgenders should be allowed in with no problem.
TIME magazine in April 5, 2016, in North Carolina, the law passed recently became the first state law in the country limiting transgender people to use the bathroom corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates, also excluding LGBT people from anti-discrimination protections, plus blocking municipalities from passing their own anti-discrimination rules. (Dalesio, 2016)
It wasn't until Walter sought help from the Liberty Counsel that he was finally successful, by circumventing the court system entirely. Through them, he had learned that California’s transgender law no longer requires court orders to change gender designations on driver’s licenses, social security cards, birth certificates, or passports. Matt Staver, president of Liberty Council, argued that Walter was denied his request to have his birth certificate reverted to its original gender because activist judges in California were more concerned about upholding an ideology that promotes gender confusion.
Is it right that Donald Trump bans Transgenders that have the capability to fight and train like everyone else? Serving for the military is a great opportunity that has been taken away from Transgenders, that deserve that opportunity, and here’s three reasons that Transgenders should be able to serve. Three reasons why Transgenders should stay in the military are they shouldn’t be kicked out and deployed out of the military despise their gender. The military will lose approximately 15,000 active troops that were doing an amazing job at serving our country. Finally, because the Donald Trump claims that the medical cost is too much, but training and getting troops up to readiness standards will cost more money.
restroom, or use the restroom matching their gender presentation and risk arrest and assault in jail or prison.” This means transgender people are able to be outed on their birth certificates and through background checks. In other states, such as Alabama, one cannot change the gender on their birth certificate until “proof of surgical treatment has been provided. Even with this proof, the updated birth certificate will indicate that the name and gender have been changed. This allows room for discrimination and a struggle for the transgender population in finding jobs. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, “Alabama is not one of the 17 U.S states that have laws prohibiting discrimination against transgender people in employment housing,
The military excludes Transgender individuals from serving because, according to Kayla Quam, “In order to join the military, individuals need to meet the physical and psychological standards listed in the Department of Defense’s Medical Standard for Appointment, Enlistment, or Introduction in the Military Services (‘DoDI 613.03’)” (721). Because of physical and mental exams many transgender individuals choose to keep their abnormalities a secret, forcing them to live a double life. Many are disqualified because of mental and false health issues. For example, “Transgender [people] who have undergone sex-reassignment surgery are disqualified under a medical regulation during the physical exam,” and Transgender individuals who have not undergone “sex-reassignment surgery but identify as transgender are disqualified under the psychological examination” (Ross 190). The military deems Transgender individuals as unfit to serve, but approximately 15,500 transgender individuals are serving in the military and there are 134,200 transgender veterans (Gate and Herman 1). Proving that transgender individuals have served in the military successfully, playing against all odds the military is in fact wrong to classify transgender individuals as unfit to serve.
Yes, this policy that President Trump has put in place has caused us to take steps back in the LGBTQ community and is extremely discriminatory towards transgender people and their society as well as supporters. I personally have a friend who is transgender and am livid about this new policy that has been put in place. It was only several years back that Obama put this policy in place in regards to allowing transgender people to serve as military personal and now their rights to serve their country have been taken away again. Why would you not allow someone to serve the country they live in just based on their identifying gender? It is pointless and just plain discimination based off of personal feelings of a specific

This law forces transgender people to use the restroom of their assigned gender. Due to this law, extremely masculine transmen will be forced to use the women’s bathroom and extremely feminine transwomen will be forced to use the men’s room. This law is highly controversial as a large amount of people are against the bill but most of the lawmakers are for it. This law is morally wrong and will cause nothing but problems. Many people have compared this law to segregation of water fountains during the 60s and
The state of California recently voted on Proposition 22, a law to ensure that the state will not tolerate or allow marriages of the same sex. It declares, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California." (Ben White Washington Post) The proposition held 63 percent of votes in favor of the ban and only 37 of the votes against. The law was passed and made California the 31st state to ban gay marriage (Wehmeyer, par 1).
