The non-profit agency I selected for my essay is one that is very familiar to me. Between my father and my husband, I have spent a total of thirty-two years as a military dependent. During those years, I became very familiar with the United States Organization (USO) and what it offers military service members and their families. The USO will always be a reminder of wonderful memories for me. I distinctly recall the time my brothers and I napped on the sofa at the Guam airport during an extended layover on our long journey to Okinawa, and when I tasted jager schnitzel for the first time while visiting a friend in Berlin. There are numerous watchdog organizations available that rate individual charities based on financial standings, dispersal of contributions, and transparency. According to Charity Navigator, a well-known independent American charity organization that monitors charity organization, the USO scores 73.73 out of 100 with a rating of 2 out of 4 stars. Any organization that rates four stars represents a grade of 60 or higher. The top score permitted is seventy (www.charitynavigator.org). The USO has played an important role in the lives of service members and their families for many years both during wartime and peace. Many famous Hollywood stars and entertainers volunteered their time to perform for military soldiers and their families both at home and over seas. The USO centers offer numerous services, recreation, and entertainment for military troops and their families. The centers are visited more than 6.9 million times every year.
