Nitrates in groundwater have become a major issue around the world and have held people back from drinking clean water. One of the many places being affected by this issue, is a city in the state of Minnesota by the name, Cold Spring. The main issue for such high capacities of nitrate in water is cropland agriculture. Cold Spring has had to forcefully shut down a couple of their city wells due to these high levels of nitrate in their water, leaving the city with a very low capacity of water to use, and drink. This issue has gotten very far, to the point that the safest level for drinking water is 10 milligrams. Drinking water that contains nitrates can be very harmful to the body and can also develop syndromes in babies. It’s not news that
Next, according to the article “Iowa’s Nasty Water War”, (2016) claims that innocent people are at risk for major health problems. A specific example is shown with the Raccoon river that runs right through Iowa. Farmers are spraying their fields with fertilizers to help the crops grow with few problems which sounds like a great idea until a study had shown that there was a large amount of runoff from three rural counties near by. When nitrates are ran into a water supply and a infant consumes it such as in the child’s formula the nitrates constrict the oxygen in the baby's blood thus turning the child a light blue. Others that are vulnerable are pregnant women and the elderly because they have such weak immune systems and are susceptible to
Starting with 8.03 grams of maleic anhydride crystals, the students successfully converted them into two isomers of butenedioic acid. From the experiment, the students learned that maleic acid converts to fumaric acid in the presence of a proton. Little occurred during the reaction between the maleic anhydride and water. The solution remained clear during the heating. Moreover, all the crystals produced during the experiment are white and brittle. Furthermore, the students obtained 6.09 grams of maleic acid, the crystals produced in the first part of the lab and 0.90 grams of fumaric acid, the crystals produced in the second part of the lab. During the melting point test, the crystals of maleic acid begin melting at 121oC and fully melted
Water contamination is vastly becoming an alarming issue across the world. We rely on clean water to survive, yet right now we are heading towards a water crisis. Changing climate patterns are threatening lakes and rivers, and key sources that we tap for drinking water are being overdrawn or tainted with pollution (www.nrdc.org). Clean and plentiful water is the cornerstone of prosperous communities. Yet as we enter the 21st century, swelling demand and changing climate patterns are
In the fourth chapter, “Fouling Our Own Nests,” of Unquenchable: America’s Water Crisis and What to do About It, Robert Glennon discusses the dangers of water contamination that plague many parts of the United States. His main claim that water pollution requires the help of the entire population stems from an unmentioned warrant: contaminating the national water supply with chemicals from individual communities and industries is detrimental to American society. In order to strengthen his argument, Glennon showcases the impacts of local contamination issues on larger populations and utilizes quantitatively intimidating statistics to solidify his position and inspire his readers to fight for better water regulation.
One of the internal conflicts that I have found was that Liesel had many difficulties she faced on her own. Liesel is still struggling with the fact that her mother abandoned her. She still struggles with it because her mother doesn't bother contacting her at all. Liesel's mother never responds to any of her letters. Liesel also has a hard time accepting her brother's death. Another internal conflict is Hans, and his personal problems. Hans gets called a Jew lover, he believes that Jews are innocent people. Hans doesn't believe that Jews are people that caused the problems in Germany. Many people in the society he lives in thinks Jews are awful people, so they disrespect the Jews. He respects the Jews, and for that he puts his family in great
To sum it up, if Congress does not vote to end fracking in New York State we are all subject to this contaminated water. The fracking companies are literally knocking on doors and asking homeowners along with people in the community to lease their property to install these wells and pump these chemicals into the ground so I have a partition layed out in the back so that You can help and join the fight by signing petitions to ensure NYS Congress fights to stop fracking on our turf also To see the validity of this contaminated water, I urge you to check out the movie “Gasland” as well as YouTube videos of running water from kitchen sinks being lit on fire.
All the controversy about the lead problems in Flint, Michigan has stirred up questions across the country. Every day there are several news stories about cities across the country discussing the lead issue and how they meet the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act. While the average person may feel comforted by these news stories, it doesn’t mean that every home served by the water supply has lead below the EPA’s recommended action level. It’s the job of water treatment professionals to educate those served by municipal water about the regulations surrounding lead and copper and what those consumers can do to protect themselves further.
As populations and global warming increases, Long Island New York 's aquifers which are layers of water underground that can be extracted throw the use of water wells, have become more extremely demanding for many New Yorkers alike. Long Islands water 's over the years have drastically increased in high level risks of water contamination, high levels of nitrogen and toxic pollutants since the early 1940 's, 60s, late 80 's mid 1990 's which finally leading up to now has become an ongoing issue that is extremely important and needs effective solutions to the resolving of the high risks of Long Islands Polluted Waters. All of the ground water in Long Island that flows through sidewalks, roadways, storm drains, soil, fertilizers and sewage
The North Raccoon River is one of the many rivers in Iowa that have high Nitrogen levels. Journalist Mike Klein's article “The North Raccoon: A River of Controversy and Undiscovered beauty” (2016) states “we took a water sample that measured nitrates at 15 milligrams per liter — 5 milligrams higher than the level the Environmental Protection Agency
The Midwestern region of the United States, such a small corner of the world, is notorious for its prosperous agriculture and its abundant livestock population. Citizens of the Midwest, and consequently, the United States, rarely have to worry about where meals will come from or when the next time water will be available. Water fountains are a common sight within public places, specifically schools and workplaces, and each system reliably produces water at the touch of a button, every time, without fail. However, what happens when the dependability of water in the Midwest is compromised? Over the past decade, the water quality in Flint, Michigan, a town very close to Iowan homes, has seen a rapid decadence, given that the Flint River has been exposed to “the presence of fecal coliform bacteria, low dissolved oxygen, plant nutrients, oils, and other toxic substances,” though the main focus has
One of the reasons why the San Joaquin Valley is highly susceptible to water contamination is because of agriculture pesticides such as the nitrogen-based fertilizer called “nitrate.” Nitrates, once they 've entered the body, are converted to “nitrites” (Basic Info. About Nitrate in Drinking Water). If a baby younger than six months consumes water with more nitrate than the
To our southern border lays a land of rich culture, values, history, and beautiful scenery. Despite small truth behind the common stereotype of Mexico as a sluggish land of subsistence laborers, Mexican society is much more than that. Mexico can be depicted by the stark contrast of wealth and poverty in the country, with a small middle class stuck between the elite landowners and investors, and the multitude of urban and rural poor. Nevertheless the daily challenges faced by the developing third-world country, Mexico is still a force to be reckoned with. Mexico is one of the head political and economic forces in all Latin America.
REMIEDIATING AGRICULTURAL WATER CONTAMINATION Remediating Agricultural Water Contamination: Problem, Solution, and Barriers Paper Problem Concerns about water pollution are generally focused towards sources that are highly visible and chemically oriented. However, the greatest causes of water contamination and quantity abuse in the United States come from agricultural production (United States Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], 2012a), which is defined as a nonpoint source that pollutes with nutrients. In 2011, nine
The field of police work is constantly being forced to develop and improve its protocols, procedures, and practices in an effort to keep pace with the ever-changing society in which it operates and criminal behavior it seeks to eradicate. While the history of policing has been marked by substantial changes throughout time, the work of modern-day police officers and officials demonstrate some of the most substantial adaptations to its surrounding environment that the field has ever seen. In order to understand where the future of policing is heading, it is important to first understand these current trends that are affecting the current landscape of the profession. By
As the Great lakes play such an important role in providing safe drinking water to North America water quality and treatment are both important topics for the Great Lakes and the people that depend on them. We have spent billions of dollars to provide safe drinking water to citizen of North America and
