One of my favourite bands of all time is Nirvana, because this was the first rock band I started listening to at the age of twelve and this established my taste of music until nowadays. However, they had a big influence on their contemporary pop-rock musical industry in the early nineties, as well. Despite the fact that they released only three studio albums in seven years, Nirvana is often regarded as one of the most influential, effective and remarkable rock bands of the century. This trio from Seattle appeared in the public consciousness in 1991 with their single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” full with pure, raw emotions which was new that time. The songs presented his struggles (Scentless Apprentice) or chaotic marriage (All apologies and Heart Shaped Box for example).
The band has sold over 75 million records worldwide. This proves that they were one of the best-selling music artists in history and since the band’s breakup, they are often considered as one of the greatest artists of all time. Two live and two studio albums have also reached the number one place on the Billboard 200 chart.
Now I would like to focus on the lead singer Kurt Cobain because he has been a phenomenon and a great icon in the past 25 years. He was born on the 20th of February 1967 in Hoquaim, which is a small town 140 kilometres from Seattle. He and his family soon moved to Aberdeen, a small, depressed town. As a child he liked mostly Beatles and some heavier music like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Kiss.
At his younger ages, he was a sickly bronchitic kid. The situation became worse when he was seven, because his parent's divorced and he never felt in secure or being loved again, he was really lonely. Due to this situation he became anti-social. He often moved from relative to relative and unfortunately he became once homeless, who was living under a bridge, which is a shrine of the Nirvana fans until today. However, he later mentioned that these actions inspired lots of Nirvana’s music. At high school, his situation wasn’t better.
