The poem I read this week which I would like to discuss and analyze is called Poetry (1975) by Nikki Giovanni. This poem is probably one of the most impactful ones I read because the tone and language that Nikki used spoke to the heart. It has a lot of hidden messages and emotion that we will discuss. The writer made a point that poetry is not a normal story that tells a narrative and ends there, but it is a life experience and life lesson. She stated “ the heart for poetry is joy, if it does not inform then close, off the brain for it is dead, if it cannot heed the insistent message, that life is precious.” (NikkiGiovanni, 1975) We will discussThis poem has deep meaning and hidden messages, and Giovanni uses beautiful figures of speech to …show more content…
Knowing the time were this poem was created give us an insight on the emotions and feelings the writer was going through. This was a big influence in this writing and you can validate this when Nikki refers to poetry, “ it never says accept me for poems seek not acceptance but controversy it only says I am” (Nikki,1975). The meaning of this allusion is that like poems who can’t be understood by everyone and not accepted by some, her feelings are similar. The racism during that time many did not accept but like a poem she is lonely at times but will continue to spread love and joy which is the essence of life. That is my interpretation of this line in the poem and I think the figure of speech used by Nikki was phenomenal. The simile used through the poem was on point for example stating: “ poetry is gentle as a teardrop strong like the eye”. This is very powerful hidden message because our teardrops are due to emotions and an expression but our eyes are powerful tool in our body. Without our eyes we cannot perceive life and the beauty of colors, shapes, and manifestation and she compared it to
In conclusion Nikki giovanni is a very well rounded poet who writes both fiction and nonfiction poems. She also explains her thought process and is very detailed. From the examples in this essay, you can also tell that in her famous poems she uses a lot of 1st person point of view to make a connection with the reader to make the reader feel what she is feeling. Nikki Giovanni also sets up her main ideas with background information in her poetry that makes her poems more easily comprehended for the
Choices by Nikki Giovanni Choices, by Nikki Giovanni, expresses throughout the poem, a feeling of depression from subjugation. Giovanni shows how the character has a choice whether to accept her fate or choose to do something. In her stanzas, she has clearly chosen to accept someone else’s choice for her. While reading this, one must concur that she wants the reader to know, everyone has a choice although she has chosen not to be happy.
Nikki Giovanni created a poem named, “Kidnap Poem”. When reading a poem with a title such as this, it is easy to conclude that this piece of poetry may be about a terrible experience about the sensation of being kidnapped, or being held captive- or what it was like being held captive. People may not assume that the poem has a happy mood to it. The author uses lots of different writing techniques like; visual imagery, repetition, and hyperboles. Theses figurative languages all are used to make the poem more meaningful and allows it to connect together.
Do you feel that your movement is limited due to your appearance? Nikki Giovanna, author of the poem Choices, is an activist, writer, educator, and poet who originally published this poem in 1972 in a collection of poetry titled My House. Furthermore, Giovanna’s inspiration towards creating this poem is the Black Arts Movement, Civil Rights Movement, Equal Rights Amendment, and through her personal experiences as an African American female. This poem cornerstones the dilemma of the African American race.
In poems it is essential to be a creative writer. The author uses many techniques from from exposing deep thoughts to giving humorous jokes throughout the sentence. As a human being, we may have difficult times in understanding what is trying to be said. We may agree or disagree depending our viewpoints on life. One of my Favorite poems is “The Ballad of Sue Ellen Westerfield” by Robert Hayden. My favorite poem is the type of poem that has some history and confusion. When getting the audience confused, it makes them want to know more and reread the whole passage again. Hayden’s poem is a fresh new opening that brought an old dimension, his creativity to open the minds of others and look back to the past.
You selected a few different poems to interpret this week then my self. You have a marvelous post summarizing each peculiar one. I likewise read Nostalgia by Billy Collins this week. My conception of the author is he practically ridicules the diverse periods of time as they were portrayed. I enjoyed this poem considering the composer certainly drives the point home with this topic. An abundance of humanity complains about past generations although trends were not the greatest it's persistent rebalance of pros and cons about all aspects of life. I couldn't agree more with you that the theme of the poem demonstrates that humanity wishes regression to the way life once
How many times a day do you make choices? Too many to count some would say, you made a choice just now to think about if you wanted to count how many times you made choices. Sometimes you have a choice and other times you do not. Most times you only get stuck with one choice and you have to deal with it. In addition, it might not be the choice or decision you would have hoped for but you go with it. A choice is making a decision between two or more possibilities. In the poem, Choices by Nikki Giovanni she writes a very short but meaningful poem about decisions and choices that she makes. Giovanni wrote this poem in the year of 1978; the year her father passes away. Throughout the poem Giovanni expresses her need to feel conform
The two poems I chose to analyze were “Curandera” by Pat Mora and “Loose Woman” by Sandra Cisneros. They were an interesting read and made sure to reread several times to make sure I got everything I could from them. Both poems are so unique from other poems I have read; they are also unique from each other yet share similarities as well.
The way the poet used powerful word choices and emotion to show how he felt throughout the poem In the beginning of the poem it starts off sad but by the end of the poem it shows a side of anger. I thought the poem was very strong and powerful because of the personification he used. I think his poem was powerful because it felt personal and something relatable in his life. Throughout the poem the poet seemed like he was talking about someone in his life such as his partner. I think if the poet did not seem like he was talking to a partner then it would not be as straightforward as it was. Since he used personification throughout the poem it made me as a reader to be able to connect with what the poet and it made it feel more personal. I really liked the word choice the poet used throughout the poem. Some of the words stood out to me more than others. One word that really stood out to me when reading this poem was the word “shit.” While most poets do not use profanity, it helped show how he was feeling and the emotions he was using at that time. I think this poet was speaking from his life experience and wanted to show the emotions he was feeling when this was happening. I think people write poetry for an act of self-expression. I believe when a poet writes a poem that they are trying to write about a personal experience in their life. Also, a poem can be emotional and creative with only a
Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.
Giovanni brilliantly uses the literary devices of imagery, paralleled repetition and symbolism to depict a vivid journey of transformation, concluding with an exquisite moment of self-realization.
poem is not merely a static, decorative creation, but that it is an act of communication between the poet and
Nikki Giovanni uses free verse, hyperbole, and symbolism in her poems, Nikki- Rosa, Ego Tripping, The Beep Beep Poem, and Kidnap Poem. Her style is to make the audience to create a descriptive picture and a deep understanding of Nikki’s perspective of her life of being a Black- American, which she didn’t let the color of her skin stop her from dreaming, creating her own imaginative life in her poet’s world.
Poetry is a reduced dialect that communicates complex emotions. To comprehend the numerous implications of a ballad, perusers must analyze its words and expressing from the points of view of beat, sound, pictures, clear importance, and suggested meaning. Perusers then need to sort out reactions to the verse into a consistent, point-by-point clarification. Poetry utilizes structures and traditions to propose differential translation to words, or to summon emotive reactions. Gadgets, for example, sound similarity, similar sounding word usage, likeness in sound and cadence are at times used to accomplish musical or incantatory impacts.
The poem I chose to do a close reading essay on was, “Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep” by Mary Elizabeth Frye. “Mary Elizabeth Frye (1905-2004) is an American poet who remains known today for a single poem-a sonnet of just twelve lines-but it may be the most popular poem in the English language. “Do not stand at my grave and weep” is a consoling Holocaust poem and elegy with an interesting genesis, since it was written by a Baltimore housewife who lacked a formal education and had quite never written poetry before, and certainly none of note” (The HyperTexts). The tone of this poem is comforting and helps people find comfort with the view of death. This poem uses a lot of imagery, metaphors, and symbolism. Frye’s, “Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep,” is enlightening people how to handle a death of a loved one while using important parts of the theme such as tone, vocabulary, and overall meaning.
