We live in a world that is not perfect, but it's important to have an education and learn to work around the setbacks and disappointments life hands us everyday. Having an education opens up new doors and opportunities in life. In Nightjohn, by Gary Paulsen, readers quickly realize that knowledge is power.
To begin with, life as a slave was tough. Being a slave with some knowledge or education was against the law. Therefore, leading to nasty punishments. For example, like mammy had said, “They’ll cut your thumbs off if you learn to read” (pg. 54). Then comes Nightjohn, a slave that knows how to read and write. In awe of this another slave, a young girl named Sarny, takes interest. Throughout the story Nightjohn, Sarny trades tobacco with Nightjohn in order to learn letters and words. No matter how tired Nightjohn was from working in the fields, he always stayed up to teach Sarny more letters. This proves how dedicated Nightjohn is into teaching other slaves. As Nightjohn had said, “They have to be able to read and write. We all have to read and write so we can write about this - what they doing to us. It has to be written” (pg. 58). He had made it all the way into free land, where he was now a free citizen. However, Nightjohn had voluntarily decided to come back to slave states to teach other slaves reading and writing (pg. 55). This indicates how important having an education is to Nightjohn. An example that proves this is Nightjohn had gotten caught teaching Sarny words. Thus, he had gotten a harsh punishment, “Thunk, the toe came off clean, jumped away from the chisel and fell in the dirt” (pg. 74). Although this had happened, Nightjohn continued to teach Sarny.
