Katie Soh Mrs Talutto English 1 3/1/2024 Night Essay. Inhumanity is a thing that happens all around us, all the time. It can and will attack one when at one’s weakest point. How could one even dream of surviving? In Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie dared to dream. Night is a true story following a teenage boy during the Holocaust and the horrors he faced because of it with his father. Inhumanity is a motif in night. It is seen when Elie is forced to see children be burned, when he is whipped by Idek mercilessly, and when he must ignore his father in order to survive. These events aided Ellis' resiliency because they helped him realize and develop the skills he would need to survive and overcome the horrific experiences from the Holocaust. The skills Elie develops are acceptance, self preservation, and regulating his emotions which help him stay calm and think of the best way to survive. Acceptance is a skill needed in order to form resilience. Elie gained acceptance as a skill when he was made to see innocent children being thrown into fire and when he was informed that he would join them. He was made aware of this when he overheard another inmate say “Poor devils, you are heading for the crematorium.” (Wiesel 32). The truth of this statement was …show more content…

This skill arises when he hears his father calling for him but doesn’t go to help because he and his father would’ve been punished and maybe even killed for leaving to check on him. But his father “continued to call. The officer wielded his club and dealt him a violent blow to the head. I didn’t move.” (Wiesel 109). This moment is important because it is a huge turning point for Elie in his life that teaches him self control and regulation of his emotions.
