To begin to understand the significance behind a painting, one must begin by examining the colors used by the artist in the painting. The first thing that really jumps off the canvas is the fact that there is an obvious equilibrium in the balance of colors used throughout the painting. The farther your eyes go from the lightened focal point in the painting, the darker the setting turns. Dark colors of blue and purple that make up the night sky and rock formations that are in the background are met by various shades of green to complete an exotic dark triad. This dark triad is then brightened by a few lighter accents, that give the overall feel of the painting a ghost-like quality. The color of the skin on the characters is a very pale grey, that just adds onto the ghostly feel. There is a blotch of red near the brightened moon that helps lighten up the clear sea. In Night Fishing at Antibes, the main shape that is the focal point is the spear in hand of the fisherman. Just as the balance of colors got darker the farther you went away from the spear, the actual clearness and sharpness of the painting gets less clear as you get farther away. The sculptures that make up the characters are softly combined with the features of the vast landscape. There is a plethora of varied lines that help sort out the wanted and unwanted, just as the shading had done before. The distorted lines that make up the character bowing his near the water creates an unfamiliar and uneasy feeling. The dark formations of rock on the entire right side of the painting are very rough and sharp to indicate the danger of the other side. The bricks to the left side of the painting are more curved to represent the safeness of the platform that the females are standing
