Over time, there has been a lot of abuse of power when it comes to schools. In the novel, The Nickel Boys, Elwood has a different perspective on life. Throughout Elwood's life he hasn't seen the true nature of how someone can abuse their power, he didn't realize how life really was until he went to The Nickel Academy. This abuse of power is also seen in real reform schools and the effects can be seen through the stories of Chee Chee and Philippe Clement. Both individuals attended reform schools and they came out as problematic. Colson Whitehead uses conflict within his novel The Nickel Boys in order to highlight abuse of power within the novel in comparison to reform schools in the real world. People had a skewed idea regarding what really …show more content…
In this quote from The Nickel Boys, it shows how much Elwood doesn't realize the reality of the power the staff has. It shows how the abuse of power is shown by giving a warning to Elwood that there isn't anything good that comes out of nickel, and is told that they will abuse their power to take them in the back to bury him. In comparison, after being sent to a reform school, Phillippe Clement never felt the same feeling of hatred towards the world. He felt as if he wasn't enough for the world and didn't feel like he mattered. In the article, the authors explain, “ Confessed murderer Philippe Clement, testifying for the first time in a court yesterday, described a life history in which he moved early from dysfunctional family situations to boarding schools, ending up in reformatories and penitentiaries. He said he eventually came to feel unwanted and unloved. "That was my general feeling towards the world"(First Column). This quote shows how abuse of power has left people with trauma that cannot be changed. The abuse of power makes the students show that they make them feel unloved, unwanted. It helps one another show that the abuse of power contributes to the education of the students and how the teacher abuses the power which makes the students
Additionally, he makes overgeneralizations regarding the unfair attitude of educators towards their students when he says that “[The hostile attitude is common] in many educational circles, but no student deserves to encounter it (7)”. The essence of his argument is that the behavior of one professor is representative of all
Often time power can be understood as control of material resources and wealth, control of politics and the institutions that make up society (Hutchison,2015). It is important to recognize and identify the core concepts of power or lack of power with individuals in society. The conflict theory allows examination within the text of those who hold power and lack power. The end result of power to hold dominance over another person, group, or society. As a result of the control and power is causes those who lack power to be devalued or alienated from a setting or even society (Hutchinson, 2015).
Power is a complex multifaceted notion and people can experience or wield it in different ways. It can have negative connotations, especially when it is abused. People of course can also experience a sense of powerlessness for a variety of reasons. The poem Drifters by Bruce Dawe explores the helplessness of a family who are forced to move from place to place in search of work. This causes great distress and angst among the family. A sense of powerlessness of course can come in many forms and in the poem Mid-Term Break by Seamus Heaney we witness the extraordinary grief and anguish of a family who are mourning the death of a son and brother. The film The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, directed by Mark Herman, explores the sense of powerlessness
The “The Nickel Boys” novel by Colson Whitehead, is about a teenager inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., as he faces tough challenges at his school called Nickel Academy. A boy goes to a school hoping to make friends and make a good impact, he soon finds that this school is not like he thought it would be. He tried to identify why they don't like him, he then realized the disgusting truth of what his peers think of him. Unfortunately, this is the reality for most visible minorities, which is beautifully depicted within this book by Elwood. Elwood learns that failing to resist, respond to, and heal from injustices leads to further suffering and perpetuates the cycle of oppression.
The novel “The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead is a story about Elwood Curtis and his experience at the Nickel Reform Academy. Throughout this story, Whitehead touches on many extreme topics which continue to be conflicts in present day society. Whitehead not only writes about these topics, but he describes the extent of the consequences of these issues to put them into perspective and further the understanding of the reader. This book is a great read for high school students to open up their eyes about the problems that occur in our present day society. Whitehead includes graphic details along with harsh realities to display these issues he touches on.
Blindly, our nation’s black population fought, not always knowing what for, just as the boys in this story fought. The segregation of schools, restaurants, and other public facilities were issues that were fiercely fought over.
In my opinion, Nick Dunne is a shameless idiot. By chapter 19, the readers are notified about his mistress, Andie Hardy; A young, beautiful woman. I do agree, in the backstory Andie did do a few mistakes, as she did try to seduce and flirt with him. Nick blocked her out at first, but slowly unveiled himself and began using her as a rebound when Amy, his wife; does not give him what he has lust for. Andie falls in love with Nick, and began to worry and miss him more after seeing the news of his missing wife. She comes all the way to Margo’s House, his sister, just to see if he is doing okay.
Madison Fisher Mrs. Daniel Kopp English 2D1-01 October 10, 2014 People are Corrupted by Power One who has power can lose sense of right and wrong, so that morals do not matter. People are corrupted by power is an important theme that reoccurs in “The Commandant’s Desk” and “Letter Home” written by Kurt Vonnegut and in the article “The Canadian Residential School System” from Wikipedia. Whether it is prisoners, townspeople or first nations, they were all abused and corrupted by powerful people.
Throughout the book, there are many examples of the conflict. I think that the
Another example of this conflict is shown when Howard is defending himself in court. He describes how everyone in history who had an idea was always criticized. People didn’t like individuality, but eventually people came around to the ideas. He feels that
“Hard Times at Douglass High shows a troubled urban school that has a hard time adjusting to the “no child left behind policy”. This school struggles with not enough money, not enough staff, and student to don't show up or go to class. I believe that the high school best represents the conflict theory. I think this because all there is in the halls of Douglas high is conflict.
The route the children are designated to take, in addition, is specified in the writing to inspire in the audience fear. The segregated school for Black students is located within a mass of railroad tracks, warehouses, and red-light districts, all notably dangerous locations for children to be in. By specifically mentioning that Ellison had “forbidden words” added to his vocabulary, he implies that he had interacted with the many unsavory individuals in the area to the extent of learning immoral materials or skills (Ellison 4433). This emotional appeal enforces the idea that impressionable children are innocent and that their actions were forced upon them by the adults in control. It also appeals to the parental instinct to protect children and preserve their future. By being forced to maintain continuous exposure to dangerous environments and professions of ambiguous morality, the Black children are victims of tarnishing and possible injury by the White authority purposefully segregating the children to hazardous areas. The strategy in specifying the unfortunate circumstances the African American children are facing is for causing the White adults to appear as villains who impose professionals of socially denigrated on innocent children. In contrast, Ellison, despite not doing anything particularly virtuous, is designated the ‘hero’ to be cheered for along with all his associates and peers, who are also victims.
An example of conflict perspective would be Arlene’s reaction to the homeless man she found in her garage that Trevor brought home to “pay it forward.” Arlene threatened the man with a gun and even called him names because she was clueless on his intentions and society has told her it is not normal for someone to randomly come fix your car. Also the depiction shows social conflict with the homeless/alcohol and drug abusers, being set apart and unassociated with
“There is no reason that we should ever be ashamed of our bodies or ashamed of our love” (Levithan). This is a quote drawn from the book “Two Boys Kissing” by David Levithan. This quote reinforces the idea that we as individuals should embrace who we are no matter our identification our sexual preferences. Levithan novel “Two Boys Kissing” brings attention and awareness to homosexuality relationships. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the sorted themes displayed throughout “Two Boys Kissing” and the effects the have on the LGBTQ community.
Through out the movie you see difficulties that the students are trying to finally fit to be part of the system but they still may not be accepted because of their classes. With low achieving school, have a suspicious amount of high test scores the reliability and dependability are questioned. Conflict theory is used that the struggle in society and schools between the haves and have nots. For example, not funding for computer, not having computers, no air conditioning for summer and less opportunities for students in general. The school is portrayed as a place where students do not want to be or care about being in school. The staff don’t care about the students especially they gave up on them. There is a quote that I got from the movie, that Mr. Escalante was asking the math department for calculus
