With its many natural assets, as well as a strategic position on the US border, the Niagara Region was one of the first parts of Ontario to be settled. The Welland Canal was built in 1830s to allow ships to travel between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie; water power and later hydro electricity were made possible by the many waterfalls. Many industries were established in the area. Based on 2001 Canada Census, the region had a population of 410,574. With an area of 1852 square km., the region has a population density of over 220 people per square km. This high density offers the region same challenges in maintaining a healthy environment
The waters of Niagara regions have been heavily abused in the past. The problem was that, the industrial pollutants were being discharged in the rivers and

The program has been able to make significant reduction in the toxic chemicals in the Niagara River. Due to the extensive damage which has been caused to the environment of Niagara Region. It is hard to come up with the strategy to recover those water bodies to its natural state by using cost cutting methods. Currently the governments on both sides of the border are spending millions of dollars to restore the water quality and bring back the creatures that it housed before the calamity. The state of New York and the United States federal government have spent $45 million to restore one of the sites that is affected by the contamination. Furthermore $30 million had been spent for the relocation of residents and health testing. Governments on both sides are being faced with the similar problems as the ecosystem in the area has already been fractured and cutting corners to save money is not a viable solution to the problem. Due to the area being heavily industrialized, factories in the region release harmful gasses. When these gasses mixed with that water in atmosphere results in the formation of acid rain. There had been cases of acid rain in the past, and will continue to
Several communities surrounding West St Catharines have different land use history. To begin, I will start with Martindale. Martindale was used to be grapevines. It was given by the name as the Grapeview area. Today, it does have a significant increase of residential areas. There are unclosed shopping centers located as well. Several public schools and churches are being built. It has now constructed a new hospital as a home to the Niagara Regional Health Care System. It provides the best Niagara Healthcare services in the area. There is also a local park called the Grapeview Park.
Canada, like so many other countries in the world continues to deal with many different environmental resource issues. Throughout our history, one of the issues affecting our country has been the treatment of our First Nations people. For the purpose of this paper, the focus will be on the safe water crisis facing Canada’s First Nations communities. The Oxford Dictionary (2016) defines a crisis as a time of great difficulty or danger. The research included will help clarify the reality of the Canada’s First Nations safe water crisis. Despite some improvements over the past few decades, many of our First Nation citizens still lack access to safe and clean water. Our reserves have water that is contaminated, difficult to access or toxic because of outdated and faulty treatment systems. (Klasing, 2016) This safe water crisis is in need of immediate attention. It is Canada’s responsibility to provide the right to clean and safe water for all of its citizens.
The Wabigoon – English River in Ontario has been contaminated with mercury for about 40 years now and the government has not approached this issue that affects most of the people of Grassy Narrows First Nation. A majority of the community has mercury poisoning, which could be fatal. Additionally, residents are forced to continue to consume contaminated food. In the 1970s, the government let the river to naturally recover itself and said that it would be better than any attempts to clean it, however, it has only gotten worse. Now, the government says that they do not want to attempt to clean the water until they are completely sure that it will not make the situation worse. Recently, scientists have suggested several solutions that have been successful in the past, but it is still unknown as to when the government will clean the water.
Despite the Great Lakes/St Lawrence Lowlands great economic success there are many issues that plagued, plague or will plague the region. One of the largest concerns is pollution and health of the environment. An immediate effect of this is acid rain which has been commonly reported in the area which leads to less sugar maple being grown in the area which has aa effect on the economy.
Ontario's many lakes, rivers, and streams played a central role in the province's history and development. For Aboriginal peoples and the early European settlers, the lakes and rivers were a means of transportation and a source of food. Waterways determined the patterns of settlement as well as the patterns of industrialization. More than 80% of Ontarians get their drinking water from the lakes. The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin supports nearly more than 75% of Canada’s manufacturing, and a third of the country's employment in agriculture and food processing.
The Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 was the first spark to women's rights movements in Antebellum America. Without this meeting, life for women today could be entirely different. Rights that seem obligatory to women today, like being able to vote, and occupational diversity for women. Women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Coffin Mott helped to kickstart the innovative ideas produced before and through the convention.
At this point, both of the rivers need to be completely detoxified, imagine a world where you could frolic in the Hudson. Projects have been undertaken to try and clean both, but what we need is a huge commitment in terms of money and time to actually make a meaningful impact. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the pollution, a cleanup has
As populations and global warming increases, Long Island New York 's aquifers which are layers of water underground that can be extracted throw the use of water wells, have become more extremely demanding for many New Yorkers alike. Long Islands water 's over the years have drastically increased in high level risks of water contamination, high levels of nitrogen and toxic pollutants since the early 1940 's, 60s, late 80 's mid 1990 's which finally leading up to now has become an ongoing issue that is extremely important and needs effective solutions to the resolving of the high risks of Long Islands Polluted Waters. All of the ground water in Long Island that flows through sidewalks, roadways, storm drains, soil, fertilizers and sewage
When one thinks about an environmental disaster, the image of a large explosion in a highly industrial area comes to mind. Such is not the case in the Love Canal emergency. Unlike most environmental disasters, the events of Niagara Falls's Love Canal weren't characterized by a known and uncontrollable moment of impact. It developed over a period of several decades, since the effects of leaching chemicals is uncertain and slow in development and the visual effects are very limited. This disaster could have been identified earlier or later for as far as the rest of the world was concerned there was no emergency until the authorities made it public. The importance of Love Canal is that acknowledging the danger that existed
In this research paper I will be talking about the Connecticut River, the common sewer overflow and sewer discharge that goes into the river, I will be focusing on the pollutants that are in the CT river, I will also focus on the high density towns and the affect it has on them, then I will talk about the ecological impacts and economical aspects. The Connecticut River is the longest river in the New England region, it spans through five states Maine (Small portions), Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut, discharging into the Long island sound. The river serves more than two million people throughout New England. The main issue with the river is the untreated storm water and sewer waste that is being discharged into it which causes many harmful effects not only to the many different species that call the CT River its home, but to the people that live around the CT River. Combined sewer overflows (CSOs), the discharging of combined sewer systems directly into surface waters upon capacity overload, are a large source of pollution of U.S. waterways. A report from the Environment and Connecticut Research and policy center has said that industrial facilities have discharged 224,029 pounds of toxic waste into the Connecticut waterways in the year of 2012. There are many government agencies such as the EPA and committees like the Connecticut River Cleanup Committee that are raising funds and awareness in order to help clean up the Connecticut River
More than 35 million people in the United States and Canada depend on the Great Lakes for their water. Wastewater, development, air pollution, pesticide runoff , chemicals, metals, plastic and paint manufacturing, the food and agriculture industry, tech companies, aerospace and automotive sectors are some of the sources of pollution of the Great Lakes in Canada. Pollution in the Saint John River, the threat level is very high, the reasons are: pulp and paper industry, oil industry, food and agriculture, forestry. And, pollution in the Skeena River: Threat Level is Low, and some Pollution sources are forestry and wood related manufacturing, municipalities and local

Lawrence River at Hochelaga (Montreal) were Huron. The Huron homeland had a lot of beaver in the beginning, but it also became exhausted from trade with the French. However, the Huron easily overcame this through trade with tribes to the north and west. Surrounded by enemies, the Iroquois had no such opportunity, and threatened with the loss of their trade position with the Dutch, they desperately needed the Huron to supply them with fur, or at least allow them to hunt outside their homeland. The Huron would not allow either of these things. Their fur went directly to the French, and the Huron were powerful enough to keep Iroquois hunters confined to their own lands. Today every Huron has been distinguished. They did not have simple life. Their life was really hard after most of them were killed ad they had to start
It is no top-secret that Niagara Falls is a tourist town. Especially in the summer, there are tour buses, tourists, and cameras all over. The hotels are full, as well as the token shops. Niagara is home to numerous museums including the Niagara Falls Wax Museum and the Schoellkopf Geological Museum, which offers info on the history and topography of the falls. The famous Rainbow Bridge, connecting the Unites State and Canada also sees much transportable during the tourist time of year. The entire city is busy with the amazement involving one of nature’s most thrilling creations, Niagara
