The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recognized five key core competencies (CCs) that all healthcare professionals should be aware of during practice. The initial competency described concentrates on patient-centered care. Throughout history, the nursing community has continued to evolve, both in the practicing aspect and in level of caring for patients. During this evolution of nursing care, nurses providing hands on care to patients must refer to the Institute of Medicine, peer reviews and/or evidenced-based research to guide them properly as it applies to the core concepts of nursing. The first core competency according to the IOM is patient-centered care.
Ron Clark describes situational crime prevention as ‘a pre-emptive approach that relies, not on improving society or its institutions, but simple on reducing opportunities for crime’. He identifies three features of measures aimed at situational crime prevention, firstly that they
Lock-out laws were introduced to help control and reduce to the amount of alcohol-fuelled violence that was found in Sydney’s CBD and within the Kings Cross area. Government officials believed that the availability of alcohol, the reality of binge drinking amongst young adults and the 24 hour pubs and clubs were the main contributing factors to the rise of violence. Therefore, ACTS and Legislations, informally know as “Lock-out laws” were implemented to help maintain a healthy night life and again, reduce violent assaults within the public.

I view Community/Population Nursing “As an extension of public health that includes organized health care services to the community through public and private agencies in addition to government agencies” (Nies & McEwen, 2015, p.). Community/population nursing implements the Core Functions of Public Health (assessment, assurance, and policy development) by integrating their clinical knowledge and their understanding of the entire population and its health and illnesses and communicates that knowledge to health planners and policy makers. Nurses promote public health through nursing interventions, programs, and advocacy and focus on the prevention of illness, injury or disability, the promotion of health, and maintenance of the health of populations
Community policing has evolved to be the most used strategy for policing. “It is an approach to crime detection and prevention that provides police officers and supervisors with new tools for addressing recurrent problems that plague communities and consume a majority of police agency time and resources” (Peak, 2012, 65). It has been defined by various people differently. But all the definitions have similar principles (Chappell, 2009). They focus on proactive problem solving and create relationships with the community to address any issue that may arise. Community policing is a combination of client-oriented and problem-oriented policing.

Secondary prevention methods mainly include the targeting of hot spots or risky behaviour as a prevention towards crime. Practices such as Quality of Life Policing, broken windows theory, as well as programs like CeaseFire are all notable. By focusing on identifying, measuring and mitigating risk the idea is that by targeting these ‘rough spots’ we are able to decrease and control crime. However, much like primary methods there needs to be support from not only the community but they must work in partnership with the state to be able to have funding towards programs that would mitigate risk. An example of how this idea of targeting ‘at risk’ people can be othering is Quality of Life (QOL) policing. This term, QOL Policing, refers to a practice

The five core competencies identified by IOM and the sixth added by QSEN, safety, are believed to be necessary to improve both quality and safety of the healthcare system within which nurses work (Multimethod teaching). The six core competencies outlined are patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, informatics, and safety (Diffusing Qsen). While all competencies are significant to the healthcare system, patient centered care is vital to positive patient outcomes and focuses on the patient’s perspective within the healthcare system.
