Sports is a major part of mostly everyone’s life either you watch it or just participate in it. Though it has it benefits, everyone has the reason why they participate or enjoy watching sports. With the benefits comes with some consequence. When a football player puts on a helmet, he knows what he gets himself into. Although they have a helmet on, they are not guarantee not to get a concussion, according to Press Release “there was a new study that found out that football helmets currently used on the field does little to no protection against hits to side if the head” (AAN). “The NFL concussion protocol is first, when a potential concussion is identified the player shall be removed immediately from the field. Second, the NFL team physician …show more content…
According to New York Times there is a new research that will help the team know what to do about players. This new research which is a simple blood test that can brain injuries conclusively (Futterman). I feel that the new way researcher coming up will benefit the athlete because now you can lie about how you feeling and the test will determine everything. Miller who is the senior vice president of the NFL, fully supports the the research, even though if it shows more clearly the precise danger that playing football poses on every play. He cares more about health than just playing, he stated that “The science has to go where science goes”.
Concussions has become major issue in sports. Over the years, the awareness of this injury is increasingly. I feel that as science is improving so will everything else in sports in terms of injuries. Back then if you had a surgery the scar was big but now it all becoming less and less. No matter what happens people won’t stop watching football just because of concussions and injuries. The athlete wont stop because they are concussed but will continue to do their job, so that is why I believe this new way of testing for concussion will be a success instead of just protocol that have been around for seven
When a potential concussion is identified the player shall be removed immediately from the field.
With every year that passes, more and more research has been obtained to support the theory have concussions have a direct correlation with long term head injuries. According to Collie, McCrory, and Makdissi , “Some football studies suggest that athletes with a history of concussion display cognitive impairment relative to athletes with no history of concussion, but other studies have not been able to reproduce such findings” Once the season begins, it doesn’t take long for the injuries to start. With so many players and teams it is almost impossible to avoid injuries all together. NFL guidelines require a trainer to be at every game, and when a head collision happens they must perform a mandatory sideline concussion assessment. The trainer onsite uses the research methods of a neurological physical test, such as some that are done in the baseline testing, to compare to the player's normal state. The NFL Sideline Concussion Assessment is the standardized acute evaluation that has been developed by the NFL’s Head Neck and Spine Committee to be used by team’s medical staffs to evaluate potential concussions during practices and on game day. This information is used to help diagnose if there is a concussion (Kelly, 2015). They trainer may use the method to ask simple questions to the injured player such as what their name is or what the date is, and if they are dazed or confused this is a symptom
The National Football League has announced its plans to invest further in its concussion testing. On Wednesday, the NFL’s Commissioner Roger Goodell published an open letter on the “Play Smart. Play Safe.” website. He details various ways the NFL will move forward in regards with head injuries, care, and prevention. He also stated that the league will pledge $100 million towards reaching those goals.
I think most NFL players get injuries because experience traumatic brain injuries at rates. Most football players who play for the NFL are to risky to play for the NFL to get hart and something else. Some people think that it is safety to play football because do not appear to have much of the impact. Most of the players started had injuries in 2015. Someone can concussion is a brain injury that can cause someone or somebody to lose consciousness. the US Army Research Laboratory in Baltimore is looking at using the specially designed straps that would help the helmet to the body and similar to suspenders to help the football players with the injury or not to have injury. It can start to help the football players when they practice every day
The new protocols have taken time to be put into effect fully because there was a sudden drop in number of diagnosed after the 2012 season when the protocol was put into place. In 2012 there was a total number of 261 concussions, and then it dropped to 229 in 2013. The dip between 2012 and 2013 may have been attributed to safer game play that is developing over the years. Refs have been taught to call more hits that are now deemed to be illegal due to the injury they may
Admittedly, there are other views about concussions in football. One argument is that players sign up to play football so why are they and the fans complaining. It is a good point, players do indeed play the sport they love, but those same players were promised better safety measures to keep them out of harm's way. It is easy to blame the players for choosing such a brutal sport, but the NFL in years past has made promises to make the game of football safer for all those who play. The NFL has come up with the program of Heads Up Football, which teaches kids proper tackling technique to make them avoid from heading head first into hits.
New surveys and data reports showing that repeated trauma to the head can cause CTE which seriously affects the brain and human body overall. Symptoms such as dizziness all the way to the most extreme like loss of motor function, dementia, etc. With all of the recent buzz about this phenomenon, The NFL, NCAA and state sports committees such as the WIAA have been trying to prevent the future generations of athletes and sports players suffer from these diseases. Acts such as reducing practice time allowing full contact and also schools buying the best helmet protection available shows how schools are really working to help kids across America. In addition, the NFL has publicly shown responsibility for head to head injuries and the lack of supervision and serious along with them. The organization is actively pushing technology to protect the brain as best as
Concussions in the NFL have become a very serious issue. A concussion is a complex process that effects the brain, usually from a trauma, it can be caused by either a direct blow to the head or an indirect blow to the body. Symptoms usually reflect a functional disturbance to the brain and may include headaches and nausea, difficulty with memory and concentration.
I've never really been big on watching NFL but now knowing how they handle head traumas makes me not want to support it at all. It’s crazy to me how professional medical people can just ignore true scientific findings like that. Several more athletes after Mike webster suffered head injuries from getting their “bell rung” but nothing was really done about it after they were hit and knocked out they returned to the game after feeling a little better and waking up. Someone's health is way more important than success in a game.
The brain is like an apple in a jar of water because when you shake the bottle it gives a clear representation of your brain as the apple, it shakes when you make contact at a huge speed. All things considered with football helmets and the technology of them being improved, they still cannot prevent or reduce concussions. The helmet technology isn’t great enough yet to prevent or reduce concussions because of the rate of impact. Finally, I believe that football is a great sport, but researchers and scientists should put more effort into finding a safer way players could play without having consistent concussions. After that happens, the game of football would become more advanced than
In the National Football League, many players have the risk of receiving a concussion. Many players that receive concussions are sidelined for multiply weeks and cannot play in the games they miss. For example Chris Miller had received multiply concussions during his career in the NFL. He was then forced to retire after receiving “5 concussions within 14 months” (Kia Boriboon, 2013). He tried to make a “comeback in 1999 but was sidelined again by another concussion” (Kia Boriboon 2013).
Head injuries, including concussions, particularly in the game of American football, have become a subject of deep concern, much study and even Congressional hearings in the United States.
These risks in sports were understood to be dangerous, and science has evolved to make sports safer. So much has changed and been updated in concussion protocol in American sports within the last few years, giving credence to the group that believes that the status quo is adequate in addressing concerns for CTE among sports. The National Football League, NFL, believes that they have been earnestly seeking answers as far back as the 1990’s when they launched a committee on “mild traumatic brain injury” after “two star offensive players retired before the age of 30 due to concussion concerns” (Lartey). Their conclusion then was that concussions were a minor concern. Since then, as new research has brought new revelations of CTE and former players, the NFL has acknowledged this and has taken steps “to warn players about the potential connection between concussions and long-term brain injury” (Florio).
Football is all about the fame and money until BOOM, you’re hit and out for the season with a concussion. The cause of a concussion is getting hit in the head too hard with or without a helmet. No matter what sport you are playing, if you get inside the head too hard it could affect your brain bad or sometimes not as bad. Concussions can happen all around the world, a lot of people suffer from them few die from them. The effects include Memory Loss, CTE, and Long-Term Brain Damage.
Before I begin my argument there is some personal connection and history I would like to share. I remember it like it was yesterday, several times feeling like I had a concussion. Getting up off the turf feeling dizzy and sometimes as players would call it “seeing stars”. Any and everyone who plays the game of football takes a risk one of the biggest being a chance to obtain a concussion. Luckily I have been concussion free but many of my friends and family members have not been so lucky. One game a friend of mine, Yaya Diaby, had a concussion and had to sit the rest of the game which had a huge impact on our defense. My former high school coach was subject to five concussions which put an end to his career. The biggest impact I’ve witnessed due to a concussion is memory
