Belton established a bright-line rule to guide the officer in the field when the recent occupant of a vehicle is detained. SCOTUS granted certiorari and ruled that any evidence retrieved is considered inadmissible. SCOTUS hearing for the Arizona v. Gant case was an exception to the warrantless search rule contained in New York v. Belton (1981). This ruling created a precedent that a police officer may search the passenger compartment of the car and any containers in the vehicle for evidence of arrest or weapons.
