For most players it’s safe to say they want to win the game, and the most elite players want to not only win the game but also set records. For those that want to win the game, they are high on the expectancy theory, because if they perform at a high level they expect to win the game. Now for the elite players who want to set records, they are high on the needs theory, because there focus is on setting a record. Even with the players’ motivation being visible, the players still need to be directed into performing in a way to achieve the organizational goal. Each player contributes to the team in different ways, and their contribution can lead to a dominant team or mediocre one. Coaches use negative and positive reinforcement to direct players to execute the desired contribution to win the game. Players that display bad habits like ball hogging or turn overs, force coaches to use negative reinforcement like creating plays that doesn’t allow them to hog the ball. IF the behavior starts to cause the team to lose the game coaches can ultimately punish players by making them sit out the next game. Coaches believe this will relinquish the unwanted behavior. Players that displays wanted behaviors are rewarded with positive reinforcement like compliments and more in game plays that allow them to have the ball. The most notable reward depending on the players’ motivation would be winning the game. Players
The Washington Wizards are one of thirty NBA organizations, and they were founded in 1961. In 1961, they were known as the Chicago Packers before switching their name to the Zephyrs the following season. Starting in 1963, they moved to Baltimore and were known as the Bullets. They landed in Washington in 1973-74 as the Capital Bullets and became known as the Washington Bullets in 1974-75. They kept the Bullets name until 1997 when they became the Washington Wizards (“Wizards History,” Online). The Wizards won one NBA championship in the 1977-78 season when they defeated the Seattle SuperSonics as the Bullets. The organization has been owned by Ted Leonsis since June 2010 as part of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which also owns and operates the Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics, the Verizon Center, and the Washington Valor (“Wizards History,” Online). Since January of 2016 I have interned for the Wizards organization in their basketball operations department. Although I believe the organization runs a smooth operation, there are certain aspects that call for improvement.

About a month ago, the Portland Trail Blazers had one of the best starting lineups in the league. They were young and rising and a perennial playoff team. Fast forward a month and the Trail Blazers are without four of their five starting players. Nicolas Batum, Wesley Matthews, Robin Lopez, and LaMarcus Aldridge are no longer with the team.
Competition is a unique situation in life to analyze. If you can focus on the small details outside of the game, there’s a possibility that you can understand the way an athlete is performing and why a coach is behaving a certain way. In the heat of the moment, if not properly trained, one can not perform to their potential due to the pressure that the moment of competition can place on an individual. This can be just as much for coaches and how they react and act as much as it goes for player. Effective coaches know how to use the situation to their advantage and know what to do or how to react at the appropriate time. In this paper, I’ll examine the competition of the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh Titans and the St. Thomas Tommies in a NCAA Division 3 playoff game. I’m watching this game from the UW-Oshkosh side, so I will be observing the UW-Oshkosh football team for the most part. With this competition between UW-Oshkosh and St. Thomas, I’ll break down this paper into four talking points and the effects of said points. These four points are pre-competition routine, feedback and reinforcement by coach, game flow and interruptions and then other thoughts and factors that I noticed during the game.
To have a well-formed plan to becoming a great leader in the NFL, there needs to be a base characteristic to succeed. The first "M" that Tony Dungy has implemented in his leadership style is mandate (Dungy, 2010). This "M" to succeed in the NFL is to put people first. Mandating needs to become second nature to create the base of a leader and being selfless. This can be achieved when a football player
Should NFL Players Kneel? Athletes in sports, mainly in the NFL, have been expressing their feelings towards the police brutality on minorities. Athletes showed their feelings toward this subject by kneeling during the Star-Spangled Banner, instead of standing up high while holding their hands to their hearts. But, after this “extremely dangerous” protest, in Alabama at a Trump rally, President Trump acknowledged this controversy and said, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you’d say, ‘Get that son of a b---- off the field right now.’ Out!

The Globetrotters played their first away game in Hinckley, Illinois on January 7th, 1927 just 48 miles west of Chicago. Coaching philosophies differ all over the world, from one sport to another. They are the central foundation to any good coach’s success in his/her respected programs. A coach’s philosophy does not only guide and lead the other members of the staff in the right direction, but it also allows each athlete to know what is expected of them, and how they should behave. By being aware of a coach’s philosophy, the athlete is fully responsible for his/her actions both on and off the field of play. In the words of the great Nick Saban, "It 's about what you control, every minute of every day. You always have to have a winning attitude and discipline, in practices, weight training, conditioning, in the classroom, in everything. It 's a process."
The Malice at the Palace was the brawl that changed the NBA forever but the effect that it had on the Indiana Pacers and their community was a little more direct. The Indiana Pacers were on the verge to possibly winning or at least competing for multiple NBA championships but all that came to a halt because of the brawl in Detroit (Newell, 2014). The brawl forced the NBA to suspend the three top players on the Pacers team one of them for the whole year, which caused the team to not have the success that they should have (Newell, 2014). After the brawl the team never was the same and the players involved where looked at as thugs and the community and the rest if the NBA looked down on them which pretty much forced the organization to break up the team (Newell, 2014). Ron Artest inability to get along with his teammates forced him to demand a trade which he was granted and then came the trades of Jermaine O’Neal and Stephen Jackson which symbolized the end of the young talented team that was expected to bring the city its first ever NBA championship and forced the team into several losing seasons (Newell, 2014).
We can all agree that basketball is almost becoming popular around the world. So many people play this sport but do people know how basketball started and how it evolute throughout the years since basketball was borned? So like every other sports and creations, there has to be a inventor and in basketball there was a man by the name of Dr. James Naismith. “Created in 1891 in a Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA gymnasium has grown into a game played worldwide by more than 300 million people”(historybits.com). So this game has been out for a very long period of time with many changing of the rules in basketball throughout the history. When it was first played in the late 1800s, there were different rules and even different looking basketball. As for the rules, originally there would be 10 people on the court but it first started with 18 people on the court which after couple of years it changed to only 10 people. Substitution was also different and the rule for this was at first no one can enter until the next game. “The rule was changed in 1920 to allow a player to re-enter the game one time. In 1934, the rule was expanded to allow players to re-enter the game twice, and, in 1945 the rule was finally changed to permit players to return to the game an unlimited number of times”(hooptactics.com). The first basketball looked very alike a football but round. The backboards were made out of straight wood and the baskets were made out of peach baskets or square boxes. There was only
Behaviour becomes either more or less likely depending on its consequences. The theory is that if you reward behaviours they are more likely to occur again, while punishment is more likely to reduce the chances of that behaviour occurring in the future. Coach Carter successfully uses negative motivation, however, positive motivation is rarely used and sport psychology research overwhelmingly supports the use of a predominantly (80-90%) positive approach. (Peak Performance issue 214) That said, the negative approach works very well in this situation
California, nicknamed the Golden State, has attracted many an immigrant through the years. From the migrations of peoples thousands of years ago that led to the establishment of the many Native American tribes that populated the land, to the Spanish and Americans in later centuries, one wonders what attracted all to the farthest frontier, the unsettled west coast. That is until you delve deeper into what the land had to offer as an economic source. The year 1769 saw Gaspar de Portola and Father Saint Junípero Serra leading the first permanent European settlers to California. Before the end of the century, missions were established along the coast and towns were established, especially Los Angeles in 1781. The establishment of missions and towns began economic growth based on agricultural production and Native American labor that would soon lead to cities, ranches and local owners under Mexican occupation taking the same advantage to produce locally until the United States brought a wave of new settlement and industrial ideas that would sweep local trade and production into a new era of transcontinental economic growth, transportation and financial gains.
