Transitioning from nursing school to working in a hospital setting can be a challenging time for a new graduate. Due to the nursing shortage, new graduate nurses are being hired with little to no experience. This is overwhelming for new nurses, especially when they are not getting adequate support or training from the hospital. The amount of stress, pressure, and lack of training is leading to a high turnover rate for new graduate nurses. With patient acuity on the rise, new graduate nurses that are filling these vacancies in the hospitals, need to be competent nurses to provide proper and safe care to the patients. Communication includes verbal and written, as well as the ability to document data. One of the most difficult transitions, and a main stress factor, is the new graduates’ ability to communicate with the physicians. Having the ability to be a leader is a key to success. “To be an effective leader, a nurse must show collaborative teamwork, which is consistent with AACN core competencies. To fulfill this competency, new graduates must be able to delegate to others to promote patient safety and health” (Theisen & Sandau, 2013). Conflict resolution with team members and patients was a noted as a skill that new graduates lacked. “Several new graduates expressed concern that they were unprepared to deal with conflict appropriately and professionally” (Theisen & Sandau, 2013). Due to the lack of experience, new graduates are unfamiliar with the proper ways to deal with conflict successfully. Mentorship has been an effective way in improving new graduates confidence in dealing with conflict, because they were guided through real situations. Organization, prioritization, and time management was another identified problem. Nurse Practitioners prescribe medication, which usually RN’s cannot do, as well as treat illnesses and administer physical exams. Nurse practitioners have a master's degree or doctorate in nursing and board certification in their specialty. A pediatric NP has higher education, skills, and training in caring for infants, children, and teens than an RN. Professional nursing practice is a large component in the healthcare system today. Back in the 1960s, professional nursing leaders tried to adopt the bachelor degree programs as the only educational track to become a registered nurse (Creasia & Friberg, 2011). Due to nursing shortages and demands this motive did not hold fast. Individuals entering the nursing profession today must first decide which educational pathway to take to become a Registered Nurse (RN).
The role of the master’s prepared nurse is just unlimited and life changing. I do not see just patient care in one specific route, but patient care in numerous ways. It is so diverse that there are numerous opportunities for me to, directly and indirectly, tend to patient care as well as advocate health care. I see more than just the role in providing direct patient care to be the only way to promote health care because a lot of time, the behind the scene people are the people who continuously help spread knowledge and awareness all over the world. There is a range of career roles I could take on such as clinical nurse leaders, nurse educators, and nurse practitioner and they all provide amazing healthcare in their own specific ways. A number of emotions were felt during this experience, in regards to transitioning from a student nurse to the registered nurse role. Primarily, the transition in role from student nurse to registered nurse was similar to any clinical experience I have had at Midlands Technical College. I was placed in a medical-surgical rotation. I felt slighted that not only were we required to complete a data tool but we also participated in the teamwork model demonstrated in prior semesters. Personally, I did not feel a transition during this particular clinical experience.
People around the world would not be cared for, educated, and have emotional support during their injuries and their family member's injuries, if it was not for Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses need to genuinely have people skills in order to care for patients and their families. Registered Nurses need to educate people on health care and how to take care of themselves during injuries. The amount of RN's has been growing at a percentage of 19%, which is faster than average ("Registered Nurses: Occupational Outlook Handbook"). This is excellent because there are more Registered Nurses, therefore, there are more patients being cared for. Being a Registered Nurse requires an associates degree, specific qualities such as people skills and sympathy, and knowledge about medical care to be able to do the duties.
The role of a family nurse practitioner is a fundamental portion of the future of healthcare. The role is clearly not as understood by other healthcare professionals as needed which results in the disagreement if the role of a family nurse practitioner is even required for primary care. As people are getting older, the need for medical professionals that can provide patient care to our ever growing population increases. The need for the role of family nurse practitioners will grow too. The role of the family nurse practitioner, the ability of the FNP to be able to transition into their role.

With an ever-increasing body of knowledge in the field of nursing, more education is being required to enter the field of nursing. Many healthcare institutions are raising the educational requirements in order to become employed or maintain employment in their facilities. Healthcare organizations are transitioning to hiring registered nurses (RN) who have a higher level of education, such as, a graduate from a Baccalaureate Degree Nursing (BSN) program. The goal of these institutions is to have nurses with a broader array of skills that can meet the growing demands of our patient population. BSN prepared nurses are recognized for their well-rounded skills in critical thinking, management, case management and health promotion versus Associate Degree nurses (ADN)/Diploma nurses that focus on direct patient care.

As of 2008, there were about 753,600 Licensed Practical Nurses and 2,618,700 Registered Nurses in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2010-11). In the year 2018, the LPN employment percentage is expected to rise 21% while the RN rate should be approximately 22% (U.S. Department of Labor, 2010-11). This may not seem that high, but it is, when one considers that the expected employment rate for a Dentist is only expected to be 16% (U.S Department of Labor, 2010-11). The nurse’s main concern is providing safe, efficient, and effective patient care with positive patient outcomes. This paper will examine the differences in competencies between nurses prepared at an associate-degree level versus a baccalaureate-degree level, in order to provide an evidenced-based understanding of the variation in the educational preparation of nurses.
Many people believe mandatory residency programs for newly licensed nurses are long overdue. The knowledge needed to practice nursing has grown to include health policy, ethics, public health, research, healthcare delivery improvements, as well as leadership skills. Nurses are part of the multi-disciplinary team and must work together with healthcare providers who possess masters or doctoral degrees. Nursing school prepares nurses with the basic information they need to know in order to practice safe nursing. However, modern nurses are faced with ever increasing demands. New nurses must know how to collaborate with the healthcare team, manage their priorities, stay organized and recognize life-threatening situations. Many new grads are overwhelmed with the demands of nursing, which can lead to compromised patient care and safety. Formalized, supervised guidance will improve patient care and retain nurses. The study also recommended doubling the amount of nurses with a masters or doctoral degree by 2020 in order to provide an adequate supply of nurses who are able to assume nurse faculty, primary care providers, and researcher positions.
