Once I graduate from La Serna High School, I will partake in a stressful journey into becoming a neurosurgeon. Neurosurgeons are physicians who perform surgeries on the brain to treat diseases or injuries. Besides surgeries, a neurosurgeon diagnose people, prescribes medicine, and also considered the surgical risks of proceeding with a surgery. This career is probably one the most stressful jobs in the world, due to all the information they must know and because of all the pressure that is on them during a surgery. The reason I am interested in this career is because, I have always been fascinated with the brain and how it works, not to mention I love helping people treat diseases or injuries.

I believe that I am a worthy candidate for this scholarship due to my recognition of the financial impact of college. Growing up in a single parent home has been a financially and emotionally difficult feat for my mother and myself. When I was seven years old, my father passed away from a blood clot. During his life, he served in Vietnam, where he was granted a Purple Heart after shattering his kneecap on a landmine. He was on disability, and my mother was employed as a rehabilitation nurse, the only source of income in our family. After his death, my mother and I both began to go to therapy for our grief over losing my father. Focusing on my mental health helped me accept the meaning of death, and struck my motivation to honor my father and ensure that he would be proud of me. When I grew up, we always relied on getting clothes from thrift stores to save money and cutting any unnecessary expenditures. My mother always worked to have enough money for food and comfort. I received monetary Survivor Benefits after his death until my high school graduation this past May. As mentioned before, my mother has Multiple Sclerosis, which is an unfortunately expensive illness. Shortly after her diagnosis, the rehabilitation unit of her work closed and she was left on unemployment right before my sophomore year of high school. I was not old enough to drive or work, so finances were incredibly strict. On my 16th birthday, I attended an orientation to work as a lifeguard at our local YMCA. The next day, I also got my license to eliminate transportation issues. My employment alleviated financial and emotional stress on my mother, as I was able to contribute to the bills and my personal expenses. Throughout my life, my mother has also been very dependent on alcohol to relieve stress. There were numerous times where I

Currently, our world is transforming rapidly to be more accepting of differences and learning to celebrate what makes people unique. This occurred through small strategic wins around the globe when people fought for what they believed in. I have faith that everyone can positively impact the people around them in a meaningful manner. Combining my past experiences and my aspiration to better the world, my dream is to go into the medical field. I would like to do research and study the human nervous system, searching for and finding a way to cure neurological disorders. I have prepared myself through science classes, AP exams, attending health/medical conferences, and volunteering at the Eagle Ridge Hospital, always pushing myself to excel at everything I tried. I received high marks alongside 5s on every AP exam I took. This past December, I was even chosen to attend the Mini-Med Operations Conference which took place at the BC Children’s Hospital. There, I learned about the world of surgery and how surgeons can aid developing countries. It covered topics such as Global Surgery and mental health.

I have always believed that education is an endless process of learning from people who inspire you and I feel privileged to have met several inspirations throughout my journey so far. As a resident, I shall continue to strive for excellence and provide the best medical care possible to my patients. Pediatric Neurology has been my driving force and a dream to pursue. Not only I feel obligated to help children live a healthier life, but I also feel the need to be able to reach out to as many people as possible. My ultimate dream is to foster painless solutions to the children suffering from epilepsy and work on finding a better approach towards the management of this disorder. With the advancement in technology, neuroimaging has led to the discovery of male brains containing a greater amount of white matter, while female brains contain more gray matter (Gur et al., 1999). Sun et al. (2015) collected imaging data to track the progress of brain network topology over a five-year period and compared the results between gender differences. Participants in the study included 43 males ranging from ages 22-53, and 28 females from ages 21-59. Only those having no brain disorders, mental illnesses, substance abuse, or first-degree family members with mental illnesses were included in the research. What makes a Neurosurgeon? The money? The type of houses they get to live in? The places they get to go? The car they drive? Sure it could be all of those things. But what really makes a Neurosurgeon? Is it ambition? Is it courage? Is it the aspiration to save lives? Is it the reaction they get after a successful operation? Or is it a dream that they have dreamt of becoming a Neurosurgeon? Well, it's all of those things. I’ve dreamt of becoming a Neurosurgeon since I was in 6th grade. Ambition is one of my traits. I’ve always had the aspiration to help others, but to save lives that’s another level I want to achieve. The reaction I get when I do something great internally is something that I cannot explain.
