Period can be defined as the overall experience of a person’s lifetime. Lastly, cohort can be seen as the overall grouping of people who have shared events during their formative years that more than likely contribute to like-minded behavior throughout the duration of their lives. There are currently four generations in United States society: Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X and The Millennials. The silent generation was born between the years of 1930 and 1945. The author of the book The Dumbest Generation is concerned over young Americans and what the digital age is doing to them. Throughout the book he cites many percentages of young Americans who are dropping out of high school and college and he blames the digital era for it. The author loves the idea of traditional values and routine and he believes that due to the amount of technology that is rising, it is killing off those core values that students need in order to grow and stay productive. He also claims that younger adults abuse their time, and their priorities compared to the older generation have changed significantly. The reasons that he gives because of these changes are due to the digital media and the advances of technology that have gone up quickly within a few years. Technology has been involved in people’s lives forever, especially in the Millennial Generation. This generation consists of individuals born between the years of 1982-2004. The articles “The Flight From Conversation,” “Teens and Technology 2013,” and “Leading The Charge For Change” deals with teens interacting with technology today.Each article has different topics, but they connect through the over dependence of teens to technology. The Millennial Generation becomes less and less in touch with the real world and morphs into a quasi-reality.

Millennials are defined to have been born somewhere between the mid to late 80s till the early to mid-90s, whereas Generation Z is characterized to have been born between 1995 till about now. Therein lies a large area for differences between the two generations. I was born on the tail end of 1999 meaning I was technically born in the Gen Z era, but I sometimes see myself relating to Millennials I see online or in mainstream media. My generation is Generation Z. When most people think of my generation, they think we are all about technology, phones and are obsessed with taking selfies. Every Generation has something special it. Most generations view the others negatively. I am part of generation Z and I believe that we are characterized as technology reliant. For example, I am typing this essay on a computer right now. Some of the older generations, like our grandparents don't understand some of the thing we like. Our grandparents don't like the music we listen to, they don't like when we are on our phones all the time, and they don't like all of the technology that we have. Our grandparents also don't like when we have headphones in because they think we aren't paying attention to our surroundings. Our grandparents don't understand that we are a different generation and we have different standards from them. Technology reliant is a good trait for us because we need social media to contact our friends and family, we like to listen to music all the time, and we have technology all over. Other generations would describe us as annoying or childish and some call us private and cynical, but I think we should be described as technology reliant, entrepreneurial, and hyper-aware because we love technology, 72% of high school students want to start a business, and studies show that their minds are steaming in multiple directions.

Born between 1995 and 2012, members of this generation are growing up with smartphones...” Many teens now are dependent on texting then having a group conversation as compared to generations we can see the differences. The generation after 2012, which Twenge calls iGen, rely more on smartphones than earlier generation. iGen use of social media, like Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook, began before they even started going to school. These kinds of uses have caused health issues, and teens are going out less to parks and using less outside resources. While it be safer that kids stay inside, they are more likely to go into depression. Smartphones have made teens less able to communicate, caused a higher risk to their health, and become too much in a iGens life.
