The word radiation means several things such as radio waves and light. When such types of radiation travel through substances, it can become charged electrically. When it is also in a tissue that is living, the ions that were produced by the radiation can affect biological processes (IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), n.d.). There are several ways people are exposed to radiation, including x-rays, “radiation used to diagnose diseases and for cancer therapy,” nuclear explosive testing that goes wrong, “small quantities of radioactive materials released into the environment from coal and nuclear power plants,” etc. (IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), n.d.). The radiation that is emitted from cell phones, X-ray machines, and nuclear power plants are very different. They are all energy, but the difference is that unlike the others, cell phones are not radioactive, and harms the body, unlike the others (Ornes, 2011).
The phones operate by altering your voice into a radio wave, which it dispatches with an antenna that it also uses to receive the radio waves from the other line, which it changes to a voice that the user can comprehend. Since the radio waves are also a type of radiation, if the user’s phone is close to the user’s head, the tissues can absorb the radiation, which hasn’t yet been confirmed, but could later on be the cause of a brain tumor or disease, since the use of cell phones didn’t start until about 15 years ago (Ornes, 2009). Studies show that spending 50 minutes or more with an active phone near your ear increases harmful brain activity because when cell phones are actively working, the radiation they emit could hurt you, after years of using a cell phone. Although there is a lot of evidence that suggests that cell phones are harmful, scientists, are still not completely sure (Ornes, 2011). SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) is the rate measurement of how much radiation your body’s tissues can absorb when you are using a cellphone. The SAR for a cellphone is set for a limit of 1.6 watts of energy absorbed per kilogram of body weight (Highest and Lowest Radiation Cell Phones, 2017).
A microwave oven is a machine or a device that uses brief, high-frequency electromagnetic energy
Just by looking at the images from the Spirit of Health study there is an obvious difference. On one set of cells the size and shape completely changed. Twenty minutes after the cell phone call was made the cells clumped together becoming two to three times bigger than the original. One reason the cells could be clumping together is because of lack of oxygen and death of the cells. The proximity of the cells to the mobile phone could by one reason the cells are dying but in children the radiation would travel much further theoretical killing many more cells. In a study conducted by Nora Volkow, the Head of National Institute on Drug Abuse, a PET scanner was used to look at the brain activity while having a phone next to a subject’s head. The study
dy that shows the brain is sensitive to the phone's radiation emissions”(1) He also says that he would performer texting over calling. I will use this article to show ways that a cellphone can be dangerous due to all the chemical and equipment it uses and how it can affect our human bodies.
6. Children are at an increased risk for adverse health effects from cell phone radiation. One
I am going to talk about the arguments about how cell phone radiation can affect our lives and whether these arguments are accurate or not. Cell phone radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation that has the ability to cause health issues. The radiation from this device can cause serious brain tumours, according to one study by Anna Lahkola of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland, which found that people who use their cell phone for more than 2000 hours have a higher chance of getting a brain tumour. The
The most important factor of the three is the amount of the dose that the body absorbs - the amount of energy which deposits in the human body. The more energy absorbed by the cells, the greater amount of biological damage occurs. Health physicists refer to the amount of energy absorbed by the body as the radiation
Mary had been referred to the surgery by a dentist requesting the radiologist to take a set of bitewings to check for interproximal caries. The bitewings were taken by implementing current ‘best practice’ principles using PSP image receptors. A week later , Mary had contacted the surgery in a traumatised state as she had learnt that she was 6 weeks pregnant and was totally upset as she was worrying that the radiation might have damaged the foetus. An assessment report on Radiation Biology was prepared ,by considering key factors such as cellular effects of radiation ,somatic/genetic effects of radiation, variation in radio sensitivity of tissues in the human body , radiation dosages used in dentistry, dental radiography and the pregnant patient and the implementation of ALARA principles in the professional practice. Based on the study recommendations were made and words advice were given to the patient which were based on the scientific information presented in the report.
Radiation Dose: It refers to the transfer of energy from the radiation to the interaction within the tissues of the
With cell phone usage increasing, many individuals have become concerned about the health effects of radiation from cell phones and cell phone towers. In recent years, various studies have been conducted to determine whether the radio frequency waves from cell phone towers have a detrimental effect on health. Current research has yielded inconsistent results regarding the effects of radio frequency waves, and while the World Health Organization does not view radio frequency waves as serious risk, more research needs to be done in order to be certain (USDA, 2009).
Cell phone radiation lacks the energy necessary to break chemical bonds which is the only known method of action for cancer causing radiation.
Radiation in the environment is widespread and a necessary process for the existence of life. We encounter it from natural sources like the sun or from modern technology such as computed tomography better known as CT scan, and nuclear power plants. Radiation from sunlight is essential but too much of it can be harmful, just as the use of radiation in CT scans. Computed tomography can provide lifesaving information about disease but can also cause disease.
There has been research that shows that long term wireless use may be associated with health risk. Sitting in front of a computer for too many hours can be a health hazard with can lead to weight gain which causes cardiovascular disease and diabetics. A person shouldn’t talk on their phone continuously for more than one hour a day. Cell phones health risks are greater if someone used a cell phone have continuous excessive use more than 10 years. Risk involves minor ear warming, ringing in the ears or effects as severe as brain tumors.
However there had done others study that express the connection between cell phones and different types of biological damage to human body. For example The European Journal of Scientific Research conducted a lab experiment with normal human astrocytes, an LG Verizon cell phone and MRET-Nylon chip. The experiment revealed that normal human astrocytes cell that were exposed to cell phone radiation at a room temperature without the MRET-Nylon chip decreased by 20% less . Igor Smirnov is one of the author of this experiment and he stated on his article that "It is well documented that cell phones, which emit electromagnetic fields in the radio frequency range, can cause DNA damage, headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, fatigue, short term memory loss, neuralgias, tumors, sleep disturbances, aberrant brain wave activity and changes to cerebral blood flow, including altering the permeability of the blood brain barrier" (Smirnov, 2009). Smirnov statement and finding about the emission of electromagnetic wave from cell phones gives a lot to think. Even-tough it's a small amount of radiation that is being emitted from cell-phones, because they are held very close to the head at the end of a long term usage the risk of brain cancer and others health problems will
Furthermore, Mobile phones are harmful to user’s health so they can affect their learning ways. Researchers have been found that mobile phones produce waves that are harmful to heart, internal and reproductive organs. Also, radiation from mobile phones can damage brain cell. (http://hubpages.com/hub/Effects-of-cell-phone--mobile-phone-use-on-our-brain-and-memory). For example, mobile phones can be implicated in brain tumours as a result of electromagnetic fields or radiation. (Raju, 2009, p.5) In http://hubpages.com/hub/Effects-of-cell-phone--mobile-phone-use-on-our-brain-and-memory,
Exposure to ionizing radiation induces oxidative damage that leads to alteration of tissue physiological function as observed in the present study. This was evidenced by significant elevation in kidney MDA content. These results match the increase in lipid peroxidation post irradiation obtained by Srinivasan et al. (2007) and Pratheeshkumar and kuttan (2011). Free radicals generated by irradiation react with unsaturated lipids generating hydroperoxides, which in turn can induce changes in lipid bilayer thereby altering the membrane permeability and inducing lipid peroxidation (Suzuki et al. 1997). Also, significant elevation of kidney GSH contents were observed in irradiated rats. This increase in GSH level may be due to transcriptional
Radiation is the reactions caused by kinetic energy passing from one place to another. Radiation has been part of the human environment since the existence of Earth. Some sources of radiation are natural. However, others are artificial. Terrestrial sources of radiation are natural and come from the earth. They originate from radioactive materials in the earth's crust. The sun's rays are also a natural form of radiation called cosmic rays. (Statkiewicz-Sherer, 2017). Artificial sources of radiation create Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) that are created by humans. EMF's could be hazardous to people who come in close contact with them. X-rays and gamma rays carry ionizing radiation and have the highest charge. Non-ionizing radiation also referred as mid frequency radiation found in devices people use every day. Low-frequency radiation found in household appliances, Television signals, and local wireless networks is also known as background radiation. (Electro Magnet Fields and Cancer, 2016).
