On December 16, 1773 a group of men decided to dress up as Native Americans and had three ships of tea go to the Boston Harbor. These men that were dressed as Native Americans said they were part of the Hewes tribe and later that day they gathered a couple other people and destroyed 342 chests of tea. When the word was spread out some of the colonists were happy and began to believe the British would have a different perspective towards the colonist and to see them stronger. But others had their own opinion where them destroying the barrels wasn’t the best way to have the tax debate settled even though some of the colonists offered to money to pay for the damage but the British refused to accept.
The American colonists did the right thing by dumping the tea overboard due to the British taxing the tea. All they wanted was freedom, and this was an act of freedom to the colonists. Also, the colonists didn’t have the money to pay for all the taxed goods. Lastly, they were very polite to the British before and during the Boston Tea Party. The colonists of America did nothing wrong.
Abstract: The famed act, known as the Boston Tea Party, was nothing like it sounds. This was an incident that served as a protest against unfair taxation on tea imports coming to America. Wanting to help a British tea company known as the East India Company, the British Parliament adjusted imports to America with the passage of the Tea Act in 1773. While some rebels in Charleston, New York, and Philadelphia rejected tea shipments, merchants in Boston refused to concede to the new law. Many colonists were enraged by this new decree, so on the night of December 16, 1773, Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty boarded three British ships, the Beaver, Dartmouth, and Eleanor in the Boston harbor and threw 342 chests of tea overboard. This
There are many reasons Native Americans and European Colonists did not have a good relationship. The reason for conflict between Colonist and Indians was due to the Colonists insatiable greed for power and land. Some of the reasons not only included physical mistreatment but also an ethical mistreatment of the Native Americans. European Colonists not only brought with them many different diseases that would later aid in the genocide of many Native American tribes, but also a mindset in which they felt superior to there Native neighbors. This feeling of superiority led to an outbreak of violence and many different civil wars. Due to the Native American and the Colonists irreconcilable
During the years between 1607 and 1611, many colonists died due to the following: Enviromental issues, settlers skills, and the Relationships with the Indians. In those years many colonists were traveling and seeking me lives but little did they know, their skill level was very low. As a result, many of the colonists ended up dead. Most of the colonists that traveled were gentlemen. However, these are not the nice men you're thinking of. These gentlemen are men that are usually to used to be useful or doing any work at all. Other than mainly gentlemen, the only colonists they brought were barrel makers, druggists, and people with jobs other than FARMING! Now let's dig deeper into why so many colonists died between the years of 1607 and 1611.
After months of protests Parliament realized their mistake and repealed the tax, but the damage had already been done and the Colonists would start a revolution to separate themselves from the British. On December 16, 1773 the Sons of Liberty, a group of Patriots led by Samuel Adams cut open 340 chests of British East India Company tea, weighing over 92,000 pounds (roughly 46 tons), onboard the Beaver, Dartmouth, and Eleanor and then dumped it into Boston Harbor; a total loss of $1,700,000 dollars in today’s money. Weeks after the ordeal the harbor still had the smell of tea. Until the 340 chest of British Eat India Company tea were paid for the British completely closed off Boston Harbor. The Intolerable act which was meant to punish the actions of the Sons of Liberty. This did not help Colonists’ approval of the British government. The harsh punishments unified the American colonists even more against British rule. The effect the Boston Tea Party had was noteworthy and ultimately sparked the American Revolution which started only two years later in Massachusetts on April 19,
Since King George taxed tea in the Townshend Act and the Tea Act all the colonists rebelled. As you know the tea act taxed tea twice. In response the Sons of Liberty dressed up as American Indians and painted there faces so none of the British recognized them, because at this time Sam Adams wad a warrant out for his arrest and he was a much wanted man. They went onto the ships late one night and dumped 45 tons of tea into the Boston Harbor. This caused the water to change a different color which it is currently still. This rebellion was known as the Boston Tea Party, and everyone still knows about it
The colonists had been so angered by all the taxes they’d had to pay, and such little independence they had, they decided they should dump the British’ tea into the harbor. As George Hughes said it, “We then were ordered by our commander to open the hatches and take out all the chests of tea and throw them overboard” (Doc 4). This was a huge turning point for the colonists, which imminently resulted in one of the greatest historic moments of the 1770’s. The colonists, after going through all the taxes and so many of the British’ laws and such, decided that they should finalize the decision and claim their
In 1773, Samuel Adams wasted a great deal of effort promoting the disagreement to the British Tea Act, and it became know as the Boston Tea Party. There was a tax on the tea, but the American colonists rejected to buy the tea until there will be no taxation on it. They chose to buy the expensive tea instead of this one. The Tea Act was passed which gave the East Indian Company to import tea to the colonies. This Act taxed the tea at the source in India rather at consumer. The colonists were not fooled by the new measures, and they didn't like the control that the government had over the dispersion of tea. So when the first shipment of tea arrived at the ports of Philadelphia and New York they were not allowed to land. In Boston, Samuel Adams was promoting opposition to the Tea Act. He published an article, and in it he calls for all Americans to protest this tax and not pay. Also, He called the East Indian Company in order to keep the peace. When the East Indian ship arrived at Boston Harbor it was not allowed to unload. Salvation Army wanted the ship to return. At least seven thousand men gathered near the Faneuil Hall to support Adams’ petition for the ship to return. Although, Governor Hutchinson refused to give permission and stood his ground. That evening a group of angry men who were attending the meeting, went to the harbor. some of them changed and in less than four hours the contents of 342 chests was thrown into the sea
Sunday of April 7th, 1765, a group of Rhode Island men boarded the Polly and took down the ship of its cargo carrying barrels of molasses from the sugar islands. This happened eight years before the Boston Tea Party, but the problem was the same. The British Parliament placed a tax on the sugar without letting the colonists have a chance to talk it over. This made the Americans enraged. The Americans needed to resist the tax, or they are just slaves to the British. Americans believed they had the right with what they built with their own strength, knowledge and will. They knew they had to obey laws, but only if they had a say in the making of the laws. The Americans would’ve resisted any tax the British put on them but when they taxed sugar,
For more detail and following the stamp act in 1770, the colonial boycotting was affecting British merchants. In Boston tension rose between the colonists and the British soldiers on March 5, 1770. Shots were fired and five people laid dead, this event became known as the Boston Massacre. As a result, Britain removed all taxes except the tax on tea. The Tea Act stated that the British East India Company was the only company allowed to sell tea to the colonists. Angry Boston colonists led by Samuel Adams dressed as Mohawk Indians and threw a load of tea off a British ship into the Boston Harbor. This event became known as the Boston Tea Party. That action caused Britain to punish Boston further and their furious attitude towards Britain increased
On one cold night of December 16, 1773 a group of men boarded a ship in the Boston harbor dressed as American Indians. With them they had the massive amount of 342 chests of tea being ready to be dumped into the harbor. Patriots like Samuel Adams, The Sons of Liberty, and Paul Revere joined in dumping the tea into the harbor. All this happened because of Great Britain forcing the colonists to buy tea from only one British company. After the Boston Tea Party the British Parliament passed several laws making sure that the colonists obeyed Great Britain. One of these laws shut down Boston harbor. British Ships blocked off the Harbor which meant no goods couldn’t be imported or exported. Many colonist thought they would starve. Just imagine not
The tea act was required that the requisite tax be collected 20 days before the next shipment arrives. So Sam Adams kept public fervor high by holding public meetings in the old south meetinghouse. The crowds were surrounding the streets. There were about 5000 people all around the streets. At one of the gatherings a deal was proposed, that they return all the tea. so on December 16, the owner of the Dartmouth agreed to sail to England and talk to the government about the proposition. And the government denied it unless they pay the money from what they have already took. They wanted to ships the boats back to England to ease the tension but bitch officials denied permission for ships to clear the port and began preparation to seize the vessel for nonpayment of the tax. ( "Boston Tea Party." Boston Tea Party. Accessed May 17, 2016.). The ship owner that evening reported his inability to deport from Boston to the throng at old south. The crowed of Indians broke out and next thing you know there was a crowed of Indians that attacked the
Throughout United States history, various Native American tribes responded differently to the European colonization process. The various ways that the Native American tribes responded to the Europeans coming to their land resulted in different outcomes for each of the tribes as well. When the Europeans first came to America, they did not know how to interact with the various Native American groups that were spread out all over the United States, and the Native Americans also did not know how to respond to the new settlers trying to take over their land.
The Tea Act of 1773 was a tax on tea but, the British lowered the cost of tea significantly enough that even with the tax, British tea was cheaper than Dutch tea. Also to keep the price down, the British East India Co. got rid of the middleman in the colonies and opened up their own shops. If the colonists bought this tea, they would be accepting the fact that the British could tax without representation. On Dec. 16th 1773 the ships docked at the Boston ports. The Sons of Liberty dressed up as Indians and threw 324 chests of tea into the water. England responded to the Boston Tea Party by the Coercive Act of 1774.
