Nat Turner was a slave who used his failed troop in 1831 at Southampton virginia. That attempt leads to an incident which became a justification of civil war. He was born on a small plantation in virginia, owned by a slaveholder Benjamin Turner. Nat’s mother was born in Africa captured by the colonial masters, and shipped to the United State as a slave. She taught her son to hate slavery because she felt death is better than slavery. His master’s son taught Turner to understand how to read and speak English. He grew up to be a clergyman and served as a preacher to the slave surrounding him. Mr Pike only preaches out the portion of the bible that goes in favor of the slaveholders, so their mission will be accomplished on the slaves to have a good heart, and character among themselves, and to their individual maters. According to Mr Pike “ Heearken, ye servant! Give strict heed unto my words. You are rebellious sinners. Your hearts are filled with all manners of evil. Tis the devil tempt you. God is angry with you and will surely punish you, if you don’t forsake your wicked ways” (Harriet, page 57 – 58). Thou, what the Rev preaches to the slaves about the verses in the Bible inspire Nat relationship towards serving his God to be stronger. The slaveholder thought their demand on the slaves was successful as they planned, forgotten that word of God does not harm. Instead, it increases someone in spirit and belief. Nevertheless, “during the following decade his religious ardour tended to approach fanaticism, and he saw himself called upon by God to lead his people out of bondage”( Britannica). In contrast, what made Nat leads his fellow black slaves to fight for freedom was his closeness to God, and he also for seeing the future that is what brought about the civil
