Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Patrick Bateman
Overview
For this psychological disorder analysis paper, I picked the movie American Psycho. American psycho is a 2000 American Canadian black comedy psychological thriller horror film directed by Mary Harron. The movie was based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel with the same name. The movie was stars by Christian Bale playing the main character and the movie’s narrator, Patrick Bateman. The movie was set in New York City in the years of 1980s. The main character, Patrick Bateman is a investment banker. The movie starts with Patrick doing his everyday activities like hanging out with his friends and co-workers, going to clubs, working, and his daily morning routines. Then his insanity starts, he starts killing people. The first killing was on one of his colleague at his company named Paul Allen. He then takes over Paul Allen’s apartment and use it to conduct a series of illegal outrageous behaviors such as rape, torture, cannibalism, and mutilation necrophilia.
Near the end of the movie, when Patrick Bateman finally realizes that he is insane and his killing sprees is going out of control. He calls his lawyer named Harold Carnes, and got the answering machine, he then confessed all the crimes and wrongdoings he committed. When he ran into Harold Carnes the next day, and asked him about the things he confessed on
The movie that was chose for this project was A Beautiful Mind starring Russell Crowe as John Forbes Nash Jr.. It is based on a true story of a mathematical genius who suffered from Schizophrenia. He would struggle with hallucinations that he thought were real and caused him to do things that were dangerous to him and sometimes others around him. After all of the struggles that John faces throughout his life he finally reaches a point where he can deal with his illness and he eventually goes back to work and in the end receives a Nobel Prize. He was a very strong man throughout all of the troubles that he faced and while he didn 't have control of his illness at first he learned how to handle it and ignore the hallucinations in which caused him to do things that were not normal. He faced many struggles but he learned to move past them to better his life. He and his wife both were sophisticated about all of the issues they faced and went through together and by the end of the movie they had a good family who stuck together through it all.
Many individuals have the power to alter their perception, but many people have disorders to comfort and confront their psychological perspectives. In the film, Silver Linings Playbook, directed by David O. Russell explains how psychological disorders are maintained within Pat and Tiffany, and explaining their theoretical personalities to three sub categories: psychodynamic, biological and trait, and sociocultural. The psychodynamic perspective looks at the topographical and structural model created by Freud. In continuation, the biological perspective is based on the genetic traits, and the Big 5 personality traits. Finally, I'll discuss the sociocultural perspective which a based on the environment factors in one's life. All of these perspectives
Elliot Rodger a 22 year old man who lived in Isla Vista and attended the University of California in the year of 2014, he posted youtube videos and statuses on facebook. He was always thinking about his appearance, many believe he could have been a narcissist. Rodgers would often be disgruntled about how attractive women were with “ugly and poor” men, or how the hot girls always chose the “losers” and not him. In his earlier age he was diagnosed with having Asperger's Syndrome, but he was still a highly functional child. Rodgers was known for having short bursts of anger towards other people. Elliot threw coffee at a couple kissing in Starbucks in July of 2011. He later wrote in his Manifesto that "I had never struck back at my enemies before,
When I was told to choose a movie to perform a psychoanalysis on a character. I did not know what movie to choose. After watching the two hour long film on the multiple characters that seemed to be struggling to find their inner happiness: American Beauty. I knew that I should not look any further. One character that especially stood out was, Lester Burnham. A forty-two year old father with a mid-life crisis. In the film, American Beauty Lester Burnham is portrayed as an ordinary man, with a perfect life, but of course that is far from the truth. From the outside, Lester seems to have a perfect salary, and a perfect family who lives in a perfect neighborhood. In reality, things are not
In psychology personalities are developed through several theorist, but from these personalities can become skewed, causing a psychological disorder on a person's personality. These personality disorders can commonly be seen in about 31 million Americans, which densely equals out to 15% of our population population (Davis, n.d.). Psychological disorders are seen as behavior patterns or mental processes that creates a difficulty for oneself or a hinder on an individual's strength to endure certain situations that take place in life everyday. Disorders are primarily discovered through psychological testing, however, it is possible to identify them through watching psychological films or thrillers. In this case, the character Joan Crawford will be analyzed for her dominant personality disorders in the movie Mommie Dearest. While watching the movie Mommie Dearest the audience can easily recognize obsessive cleaning rituals, a fantasy over one’s own success, and dramatic changes of moods that swing up and down. The main character, Joan Crawford, displays dominant characteristics of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, bipolar disorder, and a narcissistic personality disorder. As an audience we see that these disorders become very upsetting to those that are close to her, affecting her relationships with everyone and everything, specifically with her daughter Christina.
For our research paper we chose to analyze the main character in Good Will Hunting. The character, Will Hunting, portrayed by Matt Damon is a young man who is working as a janitor at the notorious MIT. The movie displays several times that Will faced a lot of troubles in his youth, and these experiences shaped his adult personality and attitude towards life. The movie gives evidence that Will suffers from quite a few psychological disorders, however the film focuses on one in particular that we concluded is Reactive Attachment Disorder. Unfortunately, Will was an orphan, who was bounced around from home to home, all while being mistreated and misguided along the way. Due to his lack of a role model and no adult taking an active interest in his life, he becomes a man who loves to argue, party, fight, and has no clear goals or purpose.
The film I chose for my final term paper was Trainspotting. The reason I chose this movie was because it looked interesting and very different from other movies I have seen. This movie is about a group of drug users in rural Scotland in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The main characters are Renton, Spud, Begbie, Sick Boy, and Tommy. Trainspotting starts with a quote that has stuck with me since I first saw it.

“For two hours tonight, he sits in between his parents with his arms spread out and draped behind their backs. He holds the tops of each of their heads and they nod and blankly drone on about what a wonder and a gift
The single case instances are studied deeper and the party studying can be more involved on the ongoing as to what is happening, this in depth analysis of a mental illness is good for the fact you may actually be able to hit the root of the problem but it may also make it worse. One perfect example and man for this is a man named Jeffery Dahmer, a crazed psychopath that needed love but went about it in the wrong way. Jeffery Dahmer, also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, was charged with numerous murders, cannibalism, necrophilia, and sexual assault to minors and adults. Dahmer loved to collect animal bones he found in his backyard, and later, this led him to dissect roadkill. As his parents’ marriage grew more important than his mental state, he was free to do, as he, felt was correct. At just 18, he had strangled a man to death while intoxicated, and exclaimed he did not remember this particular night. His alcoholism increased, and so did his fantasies, luring others into his home at night, and these individuals never were seen again, until police examined their bones and saved organs in Dahmer’s apartment. He would turn his victims into zombies just so they could not leave or fight back against him, essentially keeping them as slaves for his own sexual and sadistic desires. Though he is a great
With roughly ten percent of American adults suffering from depression, it is no surprise that the disorder is commonly embodied in both literature and film (“Facts &Amp; Statistics.”). One such example of depression personified in a fictitious character can be found in the 1999 drama American Beauty. Directed by Sam Mendes, husband and father Lester Burnham experiences symptoms of depression, resulting in an extreme midlife crisis, ultimately leading to his own demise. Although many assume depression stems solely from traumatic events or genetic predispositions, Lester’s symptoms arise from much more surreptitious and precarious circumstances: the repetitiveness of Middle America. With a thorough
As time progresses, Bateman can no longer control his urges to kill and thus the monster begins to seep into his day life driving him to madness. However, nearing the end of the film, after confessing
Dorian Gray is a narcissist and he regards his appearance, his young look - as "the only thing worth having", and sees that "when one loses one's good looks", "one loses everything". When he looks into the portrait of himself, he suddenly feels that he will be ageing and he will lose his youth and this clearly scares him. He desires to look young forever, he simply cannot stand seeing himself grow to be an old man, we can see his desire to "stay young" in "When I find that I am growing old, I shall kill myself". He is willing to sacrifice everything in order to protect his youth, or in other words, look better in appearance. We can see that he is getting mad as he discovers he would eventually grow old one day, he would rather sacrifice his
Personality disorders are pervasive in nature, and are depicted in various mediums from film to novels. Narcissism will be discussed as it pertains to American Psycho; a film made in the early 2000’s to describe a man who lives a double life as a business man and serial killer. The main character in particular, Patrick Bateman displays with themes of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and his case along with the factors that are congruent with Narcissistic Personality Disorder will be discussed throughout.
The character I choose to do my clinical diagnosis is Dr. Hannibal Lecter, from the movie The Silences of the Lambs, which is played by Anthony Hopkins. Dr. Hannibal is a psychopath serial killer who uses charm, manipulation, intimidation, and violence to control his victims and others to satisfy his own selfish needs. Because he lacks a conscience and feelings for others, he cold-bloodily takes what he wants and does what he pleases, violating social norms and expectations without the slightest sin of remorse, guilt, or regret. Also Dr. Lecter suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which explains some of his other actions as psychopath serial killer.
